So glad to see you coming back to Dwarf Fortress. Hope you can get some more good DF content in before the Premium release pops at the end the year and changes the face of the game forever.
@@lyagushkha8490 Not really? These are DF elves. They're goblin sized cannibalistic eco-fascists. With a major hard on for killing other sentient species. Not a hippie in the bunch
one of my favorite ways to play the game is to take a world at year 1, and build fortresses and hamlets over time, before retiring them, then exploring my creations in adventure mode. I will make multifort projects such as walls and roads that span the world. (you cant build at the edge of the map but there are ways of getting around it)
0.16 is recent enough that what you remember is still in, its just all expanded upon. the traditional bugs are still broken too, dwarf ownership/economy hasnt worked since we were 2D.
Could be cool if you played with one of those add-ons that says what keys you're pressing. I'd love to play Dwarf Fortress but the barrier to entry is not knowing what your options are.
I'm totally with you on that, I love dwarf fortress but even after pouring a hundred or two hours I feel like I have no clue what I'm doing and no clue what I could be doing.
I love what Dwarf Fortress is.. and I’ve been looking for a deep, sophisticated game where a ton happens under the hood. I just can’t get into the lack of graphics combined with terrible UI, and I feel like, I’m not that picky about those areas, but this one takes it.. so I’m looking so much forward to the Steam Release that will suffice judging from the screenshots.
It has been so long since I've played DF that I didn't know about the roundabout. So long in fact that the music used to be repetitive midi music I would just end up muting. Must be time to come back, I don't recognize any of this (I think I stopped playing when hygiene became a thing). I don't even remember when that was.
@@eetennak966 the packs tilesets are not even close to the visual quality and clarity of the steam version, also the main issue with new players is mostly the ui and controls, that release will solve both finally
:) Thanks for the stream. When you were worried about not all of the water going down the stairs. search youtube for "College of Dwarfology - Water Physics" the 2 videos blew my mind. he even illustrated how you could create a geyser
WRT cave-in possibilities, the Wiki states "A cave-in will occur if constructions or ground tiles are detached from all support". This implies no roof tiles are checked.. so provided you leave the floor natural on the immediately adjacent z-level above, you can dig an area as large as you want with no danger. This is bourne out by there being no constant cave-ins in the lava lake area or large flooded caverns.. WRT up/down stairs: explained easily by the diagram in the Wiki entry for 'Stairs', but in words, each z-lvl volume consists of 6 enclosing barriers: 4 walls, 'floor' & 'ceiling'. 'Down stairs' breach the floor to the next z-lvl but do not go any further; likewise 'up stairs' breach the ceiling to the next lvl, but do not go any further (thus allowing for those potential flood/magma warnings when digging). Hence the need to build both to fully access both areas ('up/down stair' construction does this automatically) WRT floodgates vs doors/floor hatches: the (only?) advantage of using a floodgate over a door or floor hatch is that the floodgate operates instantly upon lever/pressure plate activation; doors & floor hatches (& bridges) have a (distance-related) delay. This is v useful if wishing to precisely control (eg) fluid flow. Again re: fluid flow, it's usually advisable to use bridges if precise control isn't needed as they can't be blocked by debris preventing closing
How do you set up workshops to maintain a certain amount of a product? I'm running the latest LazyNewbPack version, and I don't see that enabled from my DFHacks edit: Nevermind! Found out that I have to manually enable the plugin!

The amount of detail in dwarf fortress is way bigger. Dwarf fortress also focusses heavily on individuals and history. However, the scale of aurora4x is way way bigger, and creating your own fleet is already a game all by itself. Both games tend to attract mostly the same crowd imo. The learning curve for dwarf fortress is probably a bit steeper than aurora4x, but it doesn't really matter. Expert or beginner, your fortress WILL crumble eventually.
@@bramvissers4985 I really appreciate the thoughtful reply. Thank you. I'm investing time to learn aurora so will circle back to dwarf fortress in the future. I have known about both games for quite a while but hadn't attempted either.
Nope, but it's usually a lot easier & quicker to do so rather than navigating the game's tortuous menus, plus Dwarf Therapist allows you to view multiple dwarves' stats at once
This reminds me of the humour from a far side comic:
Planned release date: Time is subjective

This game has always been fun to observe. Fixing up a society and just seeing how things happen on their own....

Something has gone terribly wrong if your Dwarven civilization has more elves than both elven civs combined

DF has changed a ton since I stopped playing ( 0.16?). Kind of excited and intimidated by the thought of relearning it.

What mods does he use
Just the starter pack, there’s a link in the description
Do you still need to use these external apps, that look like an excel sheet, to interact with DF for some functionality (to see stuf)?
You don't have to use those (that one's called Dwarf Therapist) all that info is in the game I just find it easier to find what I need with it.

Why does the dwarf fortress he's playing look completely different from the one he linked on Steam?
Steam one isn't out yet, still waiting patiently for release
this is essentially the back end. the steam release is going to be much more polished with an official tilesset.
