    Scotty, I am a senior vet living on Social Security and raising my 9 year old grandson. We just seen your The Best Dirt Cheap Scan Tool You Can Buy. I have been watching your videos for a few months now. Your a knowledge of information. I don't trust mechanic's but I wish I lived near you and You would definitely be the mechanic. of my choice. I appreciate all the videos you have made. They are honest and very factual with a lot of honesty. Keep up the good work. I for one am not a mechanic but like to do some work on my own car., however, have very limited tools. So, This Creader 3001 is a tool I would not mind getting if my engine light ever comes on. God Bless you Mr. Scotty Kilmer, I really appreciate your videos.!!!

    I think there are better cheap scan tools out there. Getting a 15 dollar ELM327 dongle, you get way more capabilities than a basic code reader. Basic code readers might work for people who just throw parts at the problem and keep their fingers crossed, but an ELM327 will actually give you live data, codes, and sometimes bidirectional functions.

      I have the ELM + Torque Pro app. I'm getting this cheap reader in addition. Sometimes it's just more convenient to plug and play for simple tasks instead of launching an app.

    Scotty telling it like it is again! There are so many TH-cam ads for scan tools that promise miracles. Even a dealer level scan tool won’t fix your vehicle unless a person learns the proper PID’s to analyze a DTC and how the affected system works normally and then discern the data to diagnose a failure. ( This knowledge typically is acquired by experience. Scotty you have 50+ laps of the Sun. That is school of hard knocks Sir!). Beam me up when you have spare moment. I swear you must never sleep! I can barely keep up watching your vids and get my work, chores and other amusements in, let alone edit and upload so many vids. Keep on trucking!

    How come cars don't include a built in way to read your computer. Especially modern cars with the touchscreen entertainment systems, I've no idea why they wouldn't just have a cable running from that directly to where the OBD port would typically lead to. At least logically thinking, I can't see why it's so difficult and (oftentimes) somewhat expensive just to get something that reads and displays what your car's computer is putting out. The car is already doing all the work, why not let it show you what its doing as well

    • @kinglangren
      @kinglangren 6 ปีที่แล้ว +31

      That would make too much sense

    • @NotTheCIA1961
      @NotTheCIA1961 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Same with a lot of stuff. I bought a car with the infotainment system about a year ago (was one of the things I wanted, the versatility of them is rather nice in my mind), and I've thought of so much stuff that would make so much sense for it to be able to do. Seriously considered trying to tap into the electronics of it and seeing what I can mod on it. How badass would it be to have it emulate my phone screen, even if it didn't have touch functionality, and then use my phone's navigation system on there (although I think Apple/Android Auto does this, not sure).

    • @virgelboyd1792
      @virgelboyd1792 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I wondered this myself. These cars literally have supercomputers cable of self driving but can't decipher obd 2 codes on board. Let government regulation hit them and next model year all the info would be right on screen. They won't do it unless forced.

    Odb2 is not for older cars... My 1995 Honda Odyssey has obd1..they act like it is a dinosaur when I try to get the codes read at the big parts store..they usually don't have the right adapter for it. Why are cars disposable now. I love my van..386k miles and it runs fine..just everything other than the engine is falling apart

    • @JustAlanIsCool

      Yep, I have a 93 Nissan that you have to count blinks on the ecu to determine any trouble codes. Some cars you count the number of times the Check Engine Light flashes on the dash, but it's not too big a hassle once you done the process a time or two 👍
      The good thing is that pre-ob2 cars are exempt from inspections! Well, at least here in GA. Afaik

    My obd2 is really old! I had to tape the cable because it's starting to split, but I don't want to get rid of it because my brother gave it to me before he died. In fact, I'm only working on vehicles because people keep calling me now that he's gone, figuring I must know something too, & I keep telling them "I'm a musician, what do I know about cars?!", but the more things I fix the more I get called! I thought it would be the opposite! I figured if I fixed something then I won't have to do it again, instead I get calls to fix something else going wrong! If it's not one thing, it's always another!

    • @knutelindstrom3716
      @knutelindstrom3716 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      J Mata I can't charge them anything bcuz I'm not A.S.E certified & therefore not a professional, so it's volunteer at this point! They do pay me tips, but $10-20 for 3-4 hrs of work is way less than minimum wage! I hope they're only calling me bcuz they're out of options & not bcuz it's just way cheaper! I would hate to think I'm the first person they're calling, though it's elderly/disabled/low income people, but they still make more than me, I think shops are still out of their range. It kind of happened out of necessity too, bcuz I have to work on my own stuff anyway, I've always been DIY, but before it was always my brother who handled everything bcuz he could fix things without having to buy new parts by rebuilding things with whatever is laying around (unless it's just really really bad)! He was like MacGuyver, but real, & he could just figure it out even if it was something he never seen before. I think people took advantage of that, especially the gang banger types, they were the cheapest ones despite having rolls of cash! If you're in SF, CA & want to do volunteer work on cars too I'll let you in on it!lol Though I figure people have cars everywhere, so you can also hang out at an auto parts store near you & pick up repair jobs! My brother would do that sometimes bcuz the employees knew him & would always ask his expertise on things & then the customer would want him to fix their car! Or there's Craigslist too, you can find work in "gigs", just advertise that you'll work on cars & put your rates or what you would charge per job! I don't know what your expertise level is, but I still consider myself a novice, I have to research everything before I start the job itself & since it's usually always a different new problem & on a different car I'll probably always just be a novice!

    • @misters2837
      @misters2837 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's cool, for $24 its cheap enough to toss in your "Travel Toolbox" and its going to tell you 99% of the stuff that's causing headaches out on the road... (I mean, ABS fault isn't going to keep you from making it home, and The Cheap Creader 3001 will tell you is it a BIG, get it towed issue, or a meh, fix it next week little issue.)

    The funny thing is, it doesn't work. It does not connect with any of the cars that I've tested it with.

    The cost of this device would be recouped the first time you get an engine light. It may be something easily fixed by the average individual especially compared to what a dealership or other fixit shop would charge you just to do a diagnostic. Heck, just the peace of mind knowing what the problem is would be worth the few bucks you paid for it. Thanks for the info Scotty!

    Now you tell me, after I bought two from Amazon. The $20 something, was just the OBDC adapter. To make it work, I had to download applications from the Google Store, and none of them was any good. I bought a $50 something one, thinking it had to be better, but it was another disappointment. All I wanted to know is why the Maint Req'd light was on before taking it back to Walmart. Either they did not change the oil or reset something.

    Scotty, I just started watching your videos and can't seem to find the time to watch them all. I am getting there. I really enjoy how you pull together so much useful information that just so happens to be common sense. I really enjoyed, "what not to say to a mechanic" because i did some of your don'ts and had to really consider my approach next visit. I would like to enter in for your chance to win one of your dirt cheap scan tools to really tell my mechanic how to fix my car. Hahaha If i don't win this, it does seem to be the tool to get having vehicles that are better than 14 years old. I would use the device to help scan my next car for my kids in the next few years. So glad I found your video's and will be referring to them for helpful clues. Thanks for all you do!
