    What do you guys think about this new guitar headphone amp?
    Among other things, I am so glad we can connect our phones through bluetooth.
    With newer phones getting rid of headphone jacks for a while, products that only have Aux cables aren't going to cut it anymore.

      Just got mine this afternoon. First thought, with a telecaster, it is kind of thin sounding, almost too bright, even on the dark setting. I am posting a big thank you, for fixing my usb connectivity issue I was having. I have windows 7, so the process was a little different, but in the sound settings I finally found the micro listed in the devices. I spent an hour trying to get audacity to see it. I doubt I will be using a phone or bluetooth with it, so what I really need is a longer usb cable to hook it to the PC. I wasn't sure if any old USB cable would work but using the one from my phone charger it worked fine. It's just too short. Honestly I bought this to use as an interface, and thought it might be handy to have a mobile amp. Once I find settings I like, I might use it some. lol
      For clean settings and effects, it's pretty cool. I could have bought a fancier better guitar interface but I aint that good at recording anyway. This will be fun and serve two purposes.
      I don't travel and I don't have to be quiet here at home. Why did I buy this? I have no clue, but I will use it as a guitar interface for now. And I don't have to use earphones to record with it, I can hear it thru my PC speakers. Thanks for the video.

      @@crowhaven200 Thanks for sharing. Did you not have any lag when you heard it through your speakers? For me, I had lag, so I couldn't use my speakers and just worked with the headphone jack on the fender mustang micro.

      @@GrowWithGuitar Honestly I have no idea. I just barely got it recognized then got involved in something else. There are settings in Audacity for latency, but I don't understand them. I used audactiy with an old digitech rig, and there was a slight bit of lag. It wasn't bad and I am not that great a payer anyway. I have only been playing for 52 years..lol.. (I am almost 70) I had delay setting on on tonight, and heard that, maybe I was hearing latency instead of delay..lol.. . I didn't have time to futz with it. It has been years since I used audacity and it is a newer version and the UI is different. I got lost right way and quit. There aren't many videos on the subject. Yours in the first one I found. I haven't even watched the rest of your video. I will do that now. if I can't record with this unit, I shouldn't have bought it. I was hoping it would be simple, no frills and work without any problems. I think I read something where it said there wasn't a lot of latency with it. But no one was using it on TH-cam, only talking about it.
      I was playing on a tele, I think I will be able to see the buttons easier on a strat. I am hoping I can set it like I want it. And when I turn it off, then back on the settings will still be there so I don't have to find them again. I need a big card, that little bitty card is too small for me to see easily. I downloaded a manual pdf, so I can see the settings better.
      I have spent maybe an hour actually playing with this thing. A little While ago, I plugged in to my pedal board and tube amp.. much better..lol I may give it to my nephew if I can't make it handy for me. he travels,, and takes a travel guitar with him while staying out of town. And a Spark 40 amp. he may like this, it's much smaller..lol
      If I get recording working I will let you know. I still have to finish your video.. :o)

      @@crowhaven200 This is a new product, so there could be a future firmware updates to fix some issues it has, but can't be certain.
      As for the settings remaining after you turn it off, if you make any changes and turn it off, the next time you turn it on, it will be the last setting you were on. However, for it to save, all the lights have to be off after you make a change.
      I am currently working to find a fix for recording and monitoring through your computer audio as well without latency. I will make a video if I find a solution.

      @@GrowWithGuitar hhmm, yes I had lag and lots of it. I mean recording, I hit a note wait.. then it records it... I am doing something wrong. I must be doing something wrong. I haven't figured out audacity yet. I am tired, only spent a few minutes on it. I have no answers and I am not smart enough to know what questions to ask.

    I got mine a little over a week ago, I love it. The 2290 effect is great for U2 sounds. It just plugs straight into the camera kit adapter then into my iPad pro’s lightning port, I use the headphone out of the micro and there is no latency that way. I was able to use Garage band and record multiple tracks that way.

    • @GrowWithGuitar
      @GrowWithGuitar  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Awesome! Yes, there is no latency recording from the headphone out. I just wanted to point that out for people that don't have anything else and were looking at that feature. Hopefully I can find a solution soon, but glad it is working for your use case.

    Thanks! I know this is three years later, but I just received the FMM as a gift. In case it helps anyone reading this now, your Windows connection instructions got me pointed in the right direction. With the amp plugged in via USB cable, I had to go to "manage sound devices". The FMM appeared on the page as disabled. I enabled it and was then able to record using Audacity.

    I like this headphone amp better than my KITHOUSE B6. Sound quality and many more effects. Of course it costs 3 times more. My biggest challenge was getting streaming from my Windows 10 PC to the amp so I could hear lessons and music and myself at the same time. I could get a Bluetooth pairing but the PC would not recognize it as a sound output device. After spending a bunch of time updating everything, I finally bought a $11 Bluetooth 5 USB adapter for the PC and now it works beautifully.

    Thanks this video was helpful but the Troubleshooting didn't work for me (in Windows 10), all I got was a virtual assistant who scanned my PC and never found the Mustang Micro. Instead, I went to the "Sound Control Panel" listed on the right and there I was able to see and access the Mustang Micro in the recording tab and enable it. Once I did that, Audacity was able to see the Mustang Micro and enable recording. Thought this might be helpful. Just got the Mustang, but it seems pretty cool for what it is, especially for $100 bills. Won't replace my tube amp of course but will be a great tool for jamming, learning songs and recording.

      I tried this and it didn't really work. Connected the Mustang Micro via Bluetooth and also connected it with USB as an audio interface. Tried to record a guitar track along with existing drum and guitar tracks in Cubasis. The intention was to monitor via the Bluetooth connection. The problem is that the sound got routed all the way back to Cubasis, so the new guitar track also included the audio of the existing drum and guitar tracks. The Bluetooth also added too much latency. So I'll need to figure out a way to monitor through different headphones that aren't connected to the Mustang Micro.

    Informative run through! I ordered one, looking forward to those Fender amp and reverb tones. Big bonus marks to Fender for the bluetooth input. I never use play-along with my Vox Amplug Classic Rock due to the headphone wire twisting and tangling is annoying enough, but add an input wire too, forget it. I have proprietary ASIO driver with my Behringer UMC202HD and it has no latency, if you set the buffer right. I'm curious about the Fender ASIO driver.

      From my experience with any Bluetooth headphones, there will be some lag. Where it is not noticeable is if you are only monitoring the audio from one source but if you are following along with video, you will notice the lag more. I haven't tried it with this product, but I assume it is the same with the mustang micro.

    Fantastic review! Do you know how this compares to the Nux Mighty Plug in sound quality? Also, when demoing the different amps, were you using a humbucker? Lastly, is there anything you don't like about this amp? I heard reviews of a hissing sound coming out of them. Thanks for making this, really insightful!

    • @GrowWithGuitar
      @GrowWithGuitar  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I actually haven't tried the nux mighty plug, but I categorize that as a headphone amp/multi effect hybrid. I think it isn't completely just plug and play to get all the features. You have to use your phone. But with that being said, that is on my list of things to check out.
      When demoing, I was using my gretsch jet club, which has a 2 humbucker layout.
      As far as the hissing, it is definitely better than the cheaper headphone amps, but it is still there. But I think there is a noise gate in the background because the hiss only comes up when you play and not when you are idle. For the cheaper headphone amps, the hiss would be there constantly. I still think those were usable with the hiss at lower volumes if you want something cheaper.
      Anything I didn't like about the mustang micro? Yes. I said it in the video, but I still haven't figured out how to record directly to my computer without latency so I can monitor the sound from my computer. Just recording with default drivers and latency has some limitations and isn't the best recording experience. I am working on finding a fix though and have emailed some people.

      So, you are saying that it won't turn on by itself and only turns on when the mustang micro is connected with a USB C cable, correct? If it doesn't turn on, then that is probably a defect and you should ask for a replacement.
      Otherwise, if you are referencing the LED lights turning off after turning it off, that is completely normal and the sound should still come out of the headphones. It turns off the LED lights every few seconds to save battery.

      I eventually will review small budget amps, which will give me a better idea and stronger recommendation. As of now, I usually recommend skipping any small amp in the $100 range and at least go for amps in the $200-300 range. From personal use, I can recommend the Positive Grid Spark Amp, which is around $270: amzn.to/3nVuXEo (affiliate link). An alternative to this would be the Yamaha THR10 at $300: amzn.to/3tfpBrh (affiliate link). From word of mouth, the Boss Katana 50 Mk 2 seems to be a good choice as well at $240: amzn.to/3a87Lih (affiliate link).
      However, this is only one route and it always depends on what you want and what fits your circumstances. The Fender Mustang Micro (amzn.to/2OFkj8Q) (affiliate link) could be a good route if you want the flexibility of taking your guitar places without lugging around an amp and if you don't have the budget to spend $300.
      Or, if you don't mind being tied down to your computer and want to record, getting a $120 audio interface like the Focusrite Scarlett Solo (amzn.to/3mP8cDq) (affiliate link) and using the included audio software for sounds and effects, or other free 3rd-party guitar effect software, could be a good option.
      You could also skip all this and save the most money by getting 4 rechargeable batteries for your vox amplug, which will run you about $20-30 with the charger. Here is one option for that - Energizer Rechargeable AA and AAA battery charger with 4 AA batteries: amzn.to/3a5HuBo (affiliate link). Energizer 4 AAA Rechargeable batteries: amzn.to/329kwER (affiliate link).
      Hope that helps.

      @@GrowWithGuitar thank you man! I didn’t even think about rechargeable batteries. I was looking at the boss katana or the spark amps aswell. I’ll probably just buy the batteries and when I get my taxes probably buy the amp lmao. I’ll be coming back to this comment to buy it when that happens :)

    Can you hook it up to a big speaker or amp??

    • @GrowWithGuitar
      @GrowWithGuitar  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm sure you can connect to those just as you would an audio interface. You will need a 3.5mm to 1/4" cable to go from the headphone jack to the amp. This is the one I used to connect to my audio interface, but it might be too short to reach an amp or speaker: amzn.to/39IBrla (affiliate link)

    Ok so I plug it into my interface but then how do you plug it into the guitar at the same time to record? It looked like you bought an extra cable or adapter?

    • @GrowWithGuitar
      @GrowWithGuitar  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      So you have to plug the mustang micro into you guitar and then connect the headphone out into the audio interface. The cable I used is a 3.5mm to 1/4" cable. There is a link to the one I used in the description.

      It should be compatible with any recording software as long as you can select it as an input. I can say it works with audacity and ableton live since ai have those.

  • @FreshSqueezedLightning

    The issue I'm having is the mustang micro being detected like a microphone. It doesn't automatically output full volume to recording, it's controlled by the headphone volume wheel. When I turn that high enough to get a loud level for recording though, it's way too loud for my headphones. I'd understand this issue with a 3.8mm output but with USB-C I thought there would be a digital output bypassing that headache. Who has a workaround? It's driving me crazy

    • @GrowWithGuitar
      @GrowWithGuitar  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      One possible workaround is you can record low volume and then boost it afterwards through your recording software.

      No, when you connect the Bluetooth to your phone, that means you can stream audio to the fender mustang micro. So if you play a TH-cam video, you should hear it through the headphone out of the mustang micro.

I tried connecting it through the USB, as well as through the headphone jacks like they suggest for the irig. I guess you would need some sort of audio interface for your phone like the irig, but I haven't messed with that stuff before, so I'm not sure if the fender mustang would work with it.

    • @GrowWithGuitar
      @GrowWithGuitar  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Aside from all the upgrades, features, and additional amounts of amp and effect options, it is noticeably better in terms of sound quality. There also seems to be a noise gate in the background because the white noise dies down when you don't play unlike all the other cheaper headphone amps.
