Conan makes a good point- you never hear anyone say "Hey that kinda sounds like Weezer" about any other band. Incredibly Unique- never sounds like anybody else.

Rivers Cuomo was the sole inspiration behind my decision to start playing guitar, I saw him in the music video for "Hash Pipe" - and thought "I look like a nerd, he looks like a nerd, but he absolutely shreds and looks so badass! I want to be like him!!!" Still playing, and I still think of Rivers every time I see a beige or green stratocaster.
Rivers is a master at writing catchy ass songs.
If time has taught us anything, it is that Lars is always cool with sharing Metallica music for free.

I had a guitar magazine around 1995 with a Rivers interview where he was asked about writing riffs and he said I just try to keep it pretty simple like James Hetfield

Since listening to this episode, I'll never unhear the Metallica nod in "The Sweater Song."
Another thing you can't unhear is the strong Kurt Cobain vibe on their original album, especially Say It Ain't so.

"Sanitarium" might be the perfect Metallica song to have inspired another, considering Metallica had lifted concepts for that song from 2-3 others (chiefly "Rainbow Warrior" by Bleak House and "Tom Sawyer").

Weezer is one of the best acts to see live. They still are good. Cannot say that about a lot of the old acts. Highly recommend seeing them. So much fun!!
I just saw them at firefly fest and they played I Just Threw Out The Love Of My Dreams and You Gave Your Love to Me Softly, one of their best sets out of 7 times I've seen them
Blink 182's "Adam's Song" is also very similar Metallica's One. If you play guitar there's almost no mistaking the similarity.
Rivers is SO reserved!..He doesn't say alot ..but what he does say is important. And.. how cool and down to earth is Conan??
Billy Gibbons and Moving Sidewalks did that to Jimi. the first show whee they opened for him in Texas. They didn't have enough original tunes yet to fill up a 30 minute set, so they played Purple Haze. Jimi was supposedly amused.
Weezer was such a huge part of my early teen years. It always makes me happy to think of those times with my friends, transitioning from very much being a child to a teen -- suddenly being 15 and going to parties and getting drunk with good friends while listening to the Blue Album.

Funny, the main thing I hear in "The Sweater Song" is the clean chord section from Slayer's "Seasons In The Abyss."

Similar story - My old band got booked to open for Vanilla Ice (for some reason) years ago and I made the mistake of telling the promoter that we were closing with Ice Ice Baby. We thought that it was gonna be hilarious and the promoter agreed....then he kicked us off of the bill 😂

Weezer definitely sounds like The Cars meets Nirvana but that alone is very unique

They released 3 singles from the Blue Album and could've easily subbed those for Surf Wax America, Only in Dreams, Jonus, or In the Garage and been just as successful.

@@potatowater285 Agree I remember getting the blue album and not knowing anything about them other than the Undone song/video that had just started getting airtime on MTV and Alternative radio. Was blown away by Jonus. It was an absolutely perfect opener to a debut album

Weezer always reminded me of Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys
The beach boys were a big influence for them especially on the blue album
The Blue Album is the only CD 💿 I’ve bought three times:
1. When I was in high school and bought a shitty scratched up used disc from a dipshit friend on a lark, only to discover what an absolute gem the album is.
2. I finally bought a proper new retail CD.
3. They released the Deluxe Edition 2-disc set and I had to buy that too. It’s definitely worth it.

I got that on stone stele, then vinyl, 8-track, cassette, cd, variable rate 320-bit mp3, then FLAC. Now its in grained in my brain.
On their broadcast debut on Conan in '94, Rivers is actually reading lyrics from a song my band gave him after Weezer's Toronto show at the Opera House the weekend before. I realize I'm super late to this comments page, but there you go...

The have played recent sets without playing Enter Sandman! Right when concerts started back up after covid they decided to play club shows. They didn't play Enter Sandman at all!

When I saw Limp Bizkit with Metallica, they covered 2 Metallica songs. It was weird.
And Sanitarium was a rip off of Bleak House's Rainbow Warrior, in the early days they took a lot of riffs from the NWOBHM and Dave also hahahahahaha
