Todays video i'm working on a briggs and stratton 5.5 hp engine. the Engine is stumbling, blowing black smoke and won't run. there is many variables here as i need to check the fuel float to make sure it's not stuck open. Need to look for gas that has crystalized, plus check the pilots to make sure they are not plugged. I also inspected the Jets and used my carb cleaning tool to make it happen. how to clean carb.

Thanks for the video. I've got a Honda gx390 that was doing the same thing as your Briggs.
After watching you, I was a lot more confident about fixing the problem, which I think was a leaky needle and seat. It's going great now, so thank you.

Pin drills or torch tip cleaner files work great for jet cleaning.
Nice one bud. Ive had the needle valve bind so many times and not seal . I usually turn the fuel on and see if the float can stop the flow . I just did one with a small piece of junk jammed on the side of the valve , dropped the valve and was lucky to see it fall out :) Your carb looked pretty clean too.
It was cleaner than most carbs I’ve looked at for sure
@@TestDontguess The last one I did was very obvious since the tank was empty and buddy says he just put some in and he was right as the crankcase had about 2 liters of fuel in it. 😂😂
Cool of you to fix it for him! You were pretty pissed after the commode incident when you were up at the river. Nice diagnosis with the float.

My father's Honda GX160 rototiller is misfiring over 1/4-1/3 throttle position. Below 1/3-1/4 it does not misfire. There is no electric start and I believe no low oil level switch.
It has Power 1/3+ throttle even under load of rototilling. I check seditment bowl and nothing. Fresh gas helps but does not cure. I buy no-alchihol gas or Shell 5% alcohol.
At least 15 years old when my parents retired when my dad use this machine to install gardens. I believe he bought it from a garden center so who knows the hours.
I do not believe the valve timing is off because of smooth idle to 1/4-1/3 throttle. No soot coming out the muffler. I don't not believe it is running lean because gradually applying the choke makes the misfire worse.
I am suspecting the 15 year-old spark plugs, perhaps even the coils. I would like to smooth out the engine because I know it hurts it to misfire and It want to till 360 sq. ft. in a few weeks.It runs better that your oumpndid at the beginning of the video.
Any ideas?
I hate those little stationary engines. They're great for garden and utility stuff but they're always clogging up and refusing to run, when you need them most. Even when cleaned out at the end of the season, they still clog up. Had the exact same thing happen to me last month with my pressure washer. Makes a 1-2 hour job into an all day hassle.

I replaced with a new carburetor and the mower started right up good, but I noticed a little black smoke and idled ruff for a minute or so then the black smoke cleared up and I ran the mower around and was ok. A few days later when I started it for 2nd time with the new carb, black smoke again so I waited and it never cleared up and started to staling. The original carb started ok without any black smoke, why did the new carb smoke right away. Thanks
Buy oxy/acetylene tip cleaning files. Very cheap and best thing for cleaning these jets. Always be double careful as the needle files can scratch the brass orifices.
Is black smoke consistent with the muffler getting so hot that it melts the plug cable?
As hot as it's been around here, I'de be sitting in that trash can. :-)

I have a brand new 8000 Generac and it hasn't run well from the first day. :-( shakes shimmies and blows out black smoke and runs high and low...It's brand new! So disappointed in Generac and I have had two before this one, with no problems until now.
