"Lao" is not short for Laoshi, but the character "lao" means old and "shi" is the character for teaching/education/knowledge/expertise (e.g. also used in shifu, shizun, shijie, shixiong etc.). So when used together it means something like "old master" which is just a respectable/formal way to call a knowledgeable person. However, 'lao" can be used to depict familiarity also. Like "old friend", "old flame" or even "ol' ma" (Lao Po) which means "wife" etc. Here it can be interpreted to be almost as affectionate as "Ah Xu", just not as much on the nose since friends also usually call each other that (eg. team SID calling ZYL "Lao Zhao"). (a little funny trivia, if one calls Gong Jun in this manner it becomes "Lao Gong" which means "husband/groom". There's a lot of off screen shenanigans about this from the cast and crew.)
Ooh, thank you for explaining this! I had since learned about "lao" meaning old, but I didn't know the breakdown of laoshi. That is really cool. And yeah, coming from ZZS, "Lao Wen" does feel very affectionate. I have tried to imagine him calling WKX "Ah-xing" but... that would almost be too weird! I guess he could do that to mess with him. I saw mention of the Lao Gong thing in an interview. I think the interviewer was saying to Gong Jun "I was wondering why my wife was saying Lao Gong to the TV" or something like that 😆

The plot is so good and like you said they really knew where to spend the money the costumes are gorgeous Love the 'face reveal' bc lowkey I got used to his hobo face and it still feels new with his hair down... he was more handsome in EP1 and now he's beautiful I'm literally WKX staring at his face all the time 😍😍 WKX's flirting intensifies 🔥🔥🥰🥰😍😍 and I love tsundere characters so ZZS's little playful moments are bad for my heart 😅😅(internal screaming SJJSBJSBVSBVSVBGDJFUGERVJFSBFOSZGHB!!!!!!)
Yes, it's impressive that the costumes are so good, and most of the wigs look really nice. I couldn't deal with his disguise-face because the beard looks so fake, it just looks weird to me. It's still impressive because they kinda made his face shape look different. The "reveal" also had a strong impact on me lol, I was like FINALLY HIS REAL FACE AGAIN. I always forget what tsundere means. Maybe thinking of Zhou Zishu as an example will help me remember ahaha.
@specificsoup yeah basically a tsundere is someone with a hard exterior who hides their feelings and won't show their affection or say/do the opposite of what they really want to say/do... ZZS slowly warming up to WKX is everything, especially with the layer of their past relationship there's a lot to read in every scene... brilliantly acted
