What motor are you running, gearing and vehicle it's on? I never have any cogging issues on my hobbywings.. I use the ez run motors and max esc's. Like max 10, 8, 6 & 5. I've never had any issues with them. Put them on the appropriate size rig with proper kv to the rig I'm running and proper gearing for what I'm trying to do. And buddy I bash the hell out of some of them!! Through mud water , launching them through construction sites 50-100 ft. Gaps ,skate parks you name it I bash or race it. Temps stay good and most importantly ZERO cogging!! . Unlike every castle setup I ever used! Motor temps go way up on castle and cog to shit. Even after programming them. P.s. sidewinder systems are garbage so don't waste your time! Unless you are putting one on a 1/18 scale they suck! Especially compared to a hobbywing
hi, i just put the goolrc motor and esc combo in my tamiya cars it works great, but if i try it in a wltoys car i get the stutter? i can lift the car up and it runs fine, but on the ground it struggles at first to get moving? i really like these wltoys cars but the brushless issue is puzzling
Finally, thanks to your terrific video, eureka! I now understand, finally understand basic brushed & brushless motor operational theory! Voila! Shazam! What's so significant & appreciated about the knowledge you impart on the subject, is that already, I am using my newfound awareness of how they operate internally to good effect, solving formerly vexing DC motor issues on a variety of scooters with twitchy, acting up symptoms intermittently. A real pain to eliminate. I now get quirky things resolved when troubleshooting much more efficiently, because my honing in process has been radially improved. Thank you, it's a blessing for me & those who have to live with me as well.
Thanks man that was educating. I kinda knew but that made it a lot more simple to under stand I have an old 1515 2250kv castle with a Traxxas 6s esc and the cog is so bad that it makes a snapping/almost skipping sound with metal pinion and spure gears on my arrma talion thank you
One question, if it's running in sensorless mode is the motor lead arrangement the same? Just match A to A ect?.... We have a mamba X and Holmes puller pro that won't run right if you match the letters. But we can get it to run okay but not sensored with a mismatched combo....
Greg scott I don't have the homes pullers motor, but while most manufacture have matching sequence but this maybe the exception. In senseless mode the lead position doesn't matter much it will spin one way other the other while sensored mode required 3 phases to match between esc and motor
Please help, what if you really need to reverse the rotation of the motor, how can this be done? My ESC is not programmable. Can I swap the wires on the motor and on the hall sensor?
Thank you for the explanation @JPRC. I am thinking about buying a slash 4x4 roller chassis and building a monster slash using the castle sct 3800kv and 2.8 Tire’s. Is this a good set up in your opinion
Can you fix the cogging once it starts on a traxxas valineon system, they must be calibrated at factory together, so in the beginning when you buy a new one this does not happen. Had new motor and esc sent separately to me, now horrible cogging. Thx for info bro!
That was great. Thank you. You explained that very well. I do have a question and it is, I am looking for speed for my SMT10 4X4 truck, what do you recommend? Thank you JPRC for your time.
for the budget mine, the hobbywing wp8-120 is a great powerfull esc, pair it with a motor ~3000kv is good for speed on 3s..if you need more speed and power..you have to go 4s -6s with castle mmx and ~2200kv motor
I have that esc, and it has 6 manual programing levels. I know what the first 5 are, but can't find the name and values for 6. Any help would be appreciated.
Hey JPRC, question for you. Looking for a brushless motor for my T stampede 4x4 (trying to convert it to be a crawler) but still want to use a 2s. What would you recommend?, what KV and what cog teeth? Thanks,
That was one of the best simple description of a sensored brushless motor, easy for us simple minded guys who don't understand the inner workings of a motor....nice job! now I get the concept of why motors cog
I've had my slash for two months and I have run the hell out of it. Hit 69 mph with the velineon system. Its just now started cogging. Why was it smooth while it was brand new and now it cogs. Its not bad but it does every now and then.
Ohhhhhhhhhh! So THAT'S why my scbe stock Fuze 3800 kv brushless motor is always jittery when trying to go extremely slow. Thought it was just my car, lol.
Thanks for the video, I have a question I bought a Castle SV3 & 4600KV Castle Motor Combo. But i noticed the motor came with a Sensored motor! i installed it last night and during throttle it kept clogging it's clogging more starting off on grass. also after 2 mins of driving the car stops seems thats motor and ESC got hot after a minute of waiting & turning ESC off and on it starts up again. i was using Nimh 5000MAH battery , i bought 2s Lipo its on the way. Thanks !
GManIsFly sounds like you are running this in a yeti. If so the 4600kv motor is not exactly the right motor for this truck as it is rated for a lighter truck such as Texas slash. Try dropping the gearing down to a 11T pinion and it will help with over heating and cogging. Btw the stock yeti esc is a re-branded castle sv3 so it is identical to the one you just upgraded to.
You seem to know your brushless. I learned from you. I have two brushless motors that are seizuring one intermittently the other all the time. Do you know why this is? The magnets are strong. The bearings are good (I replaced them, And the they are both sensorless). Is there any hope for them, some rc guys recommend i chuck them in the trash. I just like the value of fixing and running them more and I try to not waste when I can.
Ok, your gonna need a multimeter set to measure resistance. Touch it to each of the phases (A to B, B to C, C to A, and reverse), their resistance should be very little or negligible. They should all be within a small margin for resistance. If the motor passes this test, take the multimeter and touch each of the wires to the stator (the metal part where are the coils are wound against). The resistance MUST be infinite, no connection must be made. If there even is the slightest bit of connection, i.e. the multimeter reads something, then that motor has a short, and is dead. If you plug that in to an esc, then you run the risk of popping it. Keep the motor still, its good for spare bearings/ rotor.
*-Psjw00 7-* lower kv = higher toque lower rpm, but it could run more cells which then = higher torque + higher rpm. That's why guys doing speed run usually goes 2200kv and lower kv motor ms run at 6s with very tall gearing.
JPRC i have a problem right know i have a 3600 kv castle creations with a castle esc and it coggs really bad it goes for a little bit and then it completely stops i have to hold the throttle for it to go again but then it stops again it ia a sensorles motor don't know whats wrong with it
Just put a goolrc 3800kv with a 80a esc. Ran great for about 2 runs now it coggs every time i stop and go again. Seems to get worse the longer I keep running it. Using a 5000mah 50c 2s Lipo. 4x4 1/10 sct.
I raced elec and gas truggy back in the late 90's and brushless didn't exist so the upgrade was like 1000whp lol. Fell in love with the Baja Rey and Rock Rey so I have dynamite electronics and the cogging is horrible for my standards. Do the glitch busters work? At least good enough till I can upgrade?
Nice informative video, well done! I've recently changed my esc to a different one and the cogging has become more intense. I'm running a GoolRC 3800kv 3660 motor, on 3S, originally to a Hobbywing 120A esc. It ran really well, there was some cogging but it was bearable. I've since changed it to the waterproof Hobbywing WP-SC8 120A esc - the cogging is beyond... not sure why this esc is so different to the original 120A. Would playing with the timing of the motor on the esc help reduce it at all? Thanks in advance. Craig
Craggle RC the same hobby wing wp-sc8 in my yeti and the castle 1415 2400kv has minimal noticeable cogging. Have You recalibrate your radio with since installing the hobbywing esc?
Anyways... (Current) amp x volts = watts Kinda confusing when they only put amp raiting but that's because the volts is always the same either 2s or 3 s but besides that it's the same it goes from 4.2 to 3.5 no higher no lower amps actually Carrey the energy to the source in a fashion. Power is extremely complicated if u actually start to look into it with depth
Literally none of you are addressing the most important difference between the two, witch makes me question your "knowledge" what happens if you reverse direction of the motor on a sensored system? Witch method will cause you're ESC to burn out?
Get hobbywing ezruns.. you won't cog like you do with castle. Even with a sensored castle you get more cog then hobbywing.. I stopped buying castle after I started using the better hobbywing brands. Not the cheap knock off looking ones
Best explanation of Cogging I found till now.
You did such a great job putting together video in a way that anyone could understand.
Sorry I'm late to the comment party, but this was explained brilliantly thank you very much, knowledge is power 👊
great job explaining and plugging all at once, in a descriptive and easy to understand way.
Thank you. I was looking at castle 151 motor and your video came up first. I like how you explained brushless motors and how it works.
Ive been looking for a video explaining why my brushless motor cogs from the start.your the first to explain it.thanks you and you get a like from me!
Finally an answer to my questions I was scared that the sound might have been the gears but nope it’s not you get a sub and a like good job
That was great! I never really understood what was going on in there.
Greg scott for a long time I didn't either
Great explanation, was looking for a motor for my 1:8 buggy and came across this video. Very informative!
seriously some insane technology goes into these motors! holy crap
Thx Haulin' AZZ. I do have a meter and I'll try your suggestion when I get a chance in February.
thanks I learnd alot, and I would watch again, cool.
Thank you so much for sharing some info, and for helping out w understanding different between sensors and sensoreless
Finally, an explanation of cogging !!!!! Thank you very much
you are welcome :)
Thank you for the clearly explained and illustrated video. 😊
love this vid totally explained the whole reason sensored is best good thing I just put a Holmes hobbies sensored system into my axial bomber
Very good explanation! Looking forward to seeing the TT.
Brian Rader thanks man. I working in the TT as we speak
cant wait for the trophy truck videos!
_RC_KING_ me too
good job man.
it's awesome to see y9u more in your videos.
great stuff man.
and that rig is awesome.
I can't wait to see it.
Quak Rc thanks man for the support as always
An almost great explanation :-) Thumbs up!
Great video and explanation!
Castle is definitely a awesome brand.
Great video 🎉
I have some pretty seriously cogging with my Hobbywing Justock ESC and my ThunderPower Z3R.
not sure if could help

The Engineering Explained of the RC world lol
lol..thank you my friend
I had these issues with my castle 1410 3800kv in a 2wd slash and the castle 2400kv system with SW4 in my Arrma Senton.
Awesome job on this video! Well done!
hi, i just put the goolrc motor and esc combo in my tamiya cars it works great, but if i try it in a wltoys car i get the stutter? i can lift the car up and it runs fine, but on the ground it struggles at first to get moving? i really like these wltoys cars but the brushless issue is puzzling

Hello Joe!!!
Hey hey
I just ordered this combo for my summit
Thanks for this great vid bro !

Well informative video!
NOW I UNDERSTAND!

buenos dias ese combo castle sirve para mi slahs escala 1/10 ? cuantas baterías lipo nesecita?
Hi great video but can a cogging motor be cured ?
Good morning that combo castle serves for my 1/10 scale slahs? How many lipo batteries do you need
welly well made video, thank you for this one!
Very good!
Great Explanation, Thank you
VERY HELPFUL. THANK YOU

great stuff bro! like up
Do you know where I can find a 1/5 scale sesored motor?
thanks, well explained 👍🏻
great video bud.. learned alot
Roger chevelle thanks man
Great video
Hey JPRC, question for you. Looking for a brushless motor for my T stampede 4x4 (trying to convert it to be a crawler) but still want to use a 2s. What would you recommend?, what KV and what cog teeth? Thanks,
Great video mate! thanks for sharing :)
hey Mark. thanks for stopping by..how are your xo-1s doing?
thanks brother, love your work man! My X0-1s are doing awesome! I've done a few upgrades to them.....more to come lol :) cheers mate
That was one of the best simple description of a sensored brushless motor, easy for us simple minded guys who don't understand the inner workings of a motor....nice job! now I get the concept of why motors cog
Crazy Craig's RC's and 3d awesome!

Ohhhhhhhhhh! So THAT'S why my scbe stock Fuze 3800 kv brushless motor is always jittery when trying to go extremely slow. Thought it was just my car, lol.
once you have driven a sensored setup truck you want it on all other trucks :)
Can these motors also be used for a rc boat ?
Castle do make one for boats
Can you tell me if this setups good for a 1/8 scale landmax drift car that weighs 11 pounds or would a 2200kv setup be better?great explanation btw!
Wazza722 this is actually a 1/8 scale system. It will do fine do a rig weighing 11lb.
Does anybody’s motor coug in reverse
that was awesome. thanks for the info. So can this effect take place in a brushed motor also? just curious. thx.
+Steve Soper brushed motor doesn't quite work the same and you don't usually get cogging in brushed motors
Thanks for the video, I have a question I bought a Castle SV3 & 4600KV Castle Motor Combo. GManIsFly make sure to calibrate esc to your radio. Also what gearing u running in what truck?
Spur 64 & motor gear 17T
GManIsFly sounds like you are running this in a yeti. If so the 4600kv motor is not exactly the right motor for this truck as it is rated for a lighter truck such as Texas slash. My truck is a redcat volcano epx
GManIsFly the same would still apply for this truck.
thank you big time
Cool vid. Great info

I want the sensord 2400kv motor
ULTiMATE TRAXXAS MAN I have the sensorless 2400kv version it is surprising smooth even at low speed
JPRC I have the sensorless one also i have one in my slash 4x4 and my traxxas funny car . what a power house . It is really smooth also
ULTiMATE TRAXXAS MAN I am actually running the traxxas rebrand version (funny car stock motor) in one of my yeti. Absolutely love it on 3s
JPRC I love the castle mamba max pro sct 2400kv system. I have the old funny car with the castle branded motor. it kicks ass on 2s 3s and 4s
get 5mm shaft 4 peace of mind!!!
is the drag brake good as brushed motor?
so far no brushless motors are as smooth as brushed
+JPRC thank you for the info'
Nice vid 👍 im a new subscriber
is less kv faster than higher kv motors?
*-Psjw00 7-* lower kv = higher toque lower rpm, but it could run more cells which then = higher torque + higher rpm. That's why guys doing speed run usually goes 2200kv and lower kv motor ms run at 6s with very tall gearing.

nice vid
dose cogging make the motor vary hot?
Let me know in the comment if you had some seriously cogging motors and what was the make and model?
JPRC i have a problem right know i have a 3600 kv castle creations with a castle esc and it coggs really bad it goes for a little bit and then it completely stops i have to hold the throttle for it to go again but then it stops again it ia a sensorles motor don't know whats wrong with it
RC create try putting in a glitch buster
JPRC what would you recommend for the bomber?

What propels a motor ? Current or volts?
Seriously.....????
Sorry if im a dick i feel like everyone should know that but I suppose before I got in the electrical field I may have wonderd the same question haha
Anyways... (Current) amp x volts = watts

anyone know a very op motor for a traxxas slash
CAN I USE A BRUSHLESS SENSORED ESC ,ON A REGULAR BL MOTOR.I bought the wrong ESC by accident.
john ciccolella what model of the esc did you get. Most sensored esc have a sensorless mode in the programming settings.
As long as it’s not brushed motor
So what happen if my sensored motor cogging??
Wicked!
i got the 1515 2200kv that fucker has balls way more than the nonsensored and my packs go longer
Can interference cause this too??
Smart
Wouldn't be easier just to show the RC Cogging in Sensor less mode then Show it not cogging in Sensored mode?
skirmich Dude...
that's not cogging.
cogging is related to the interaction between the permanent magnets and the slots in the stator...
i also have a 5mm shaft :"(
Swagpotatogaming stop it!
Castle kwe-ations 😂
Schooling US
Literally none of you are addressing the most important difference between the two, witch makes me question your "knowledge" what happens if you reverse direction of the motor on a sensored system? Witch method will cause you're ESC to burn out?
