I discoverd Rachel many years ago. The first thing I saw her play was Tarkus. Yeah, you know, that song that's impossible to play, that only Keith Emerson could play? Ah, no. She sat down and said, "Hold my lemonaide." She is amzaing. One of the greatest keyboard talents this earth has ever witnessed.

  • @Lightmane
    @Lightmane ปีที่แล้ว +35

So glad I found Rachel on TH-cam, but it's only because of ELP that I found her. She performed all of Tarkus by herself on the piano in front of an audience, and it blew everyone's mind. She also performed at Keith's funeral, and broke down in tears at one point, but composed herself just in time to keep playing.

There is a video of her playing a tribute to Keith with orchestra at Royal Albert Hall. Between playing she is in tears, and the concerned floor manager checks on her. But it's clearly tears of joy at the whole orchestra experience, mixed with dealing with the loss of Keith.

Thank you for featuring Rachel on your marathon! It's always fun to see people discovering her for the first time! I wanted to mention that Rachel's recording of Zomby Woof was done during a single 2 1/2 hour marathon (!) live stream that folks can watch here th-cam.com/video/Y7Qs56_dvhk/w-d-xo.html Afterward our IT guru Robert Minsk edited the parts together to create the finished video you watched. I also wanted to add that Mike Keneally was part of Rachel's band at this year's ProgStock 2022 concert, and he is amazing! Thanks again!

At around 9:37 we have Keith Emerson talk about his instrument and he addresses Rachel, TH-cam blocked that part because of the music in the background. The video stays mute for about a minute and the audio resumes before Rachel begins to play. A add also totally caught me by surprise so I just wanted to give everyone a heads up. Here is the original video.

Rachel Flowers is an incredible talent. I first discovered her on TH-cam, and I've since bought her albums and they've become some of my favorites. She performed on Keith Emerson's Modular Moog at his home while Keith was still in London working on a project. The Moog was just returned by the factory after a tune-up, so she was the first one to play it, even before Keith! Keith Emerson and Greg Lake were taken by her, and they became very close friends. She played at the Keith Emerson Memorial Concert, and her performance was flawless, but heart breaking, because she was simply crying her eyes out. She also had a wonderful tribute to Greg Lake on her first album, "Listen," called "Greg's Favorite." She's also an amazing flutist.

Seen her play in person several times, including at the 2016 Keith Emerson Tribute Concert, and recently at Synthplex, during that Emerson tribute where Jordan Rudess played Tarkus with Mark Bonilla's band. She and Emerson knew each other. She plays many kinds of music including her own solo work, and is a multi-instrumentalist. She is a prodigy, when she plays you can tell she 'becomes' the music. She can play any music she hears almost instantly. One funny event - at an intimate concert I was at, someones cell phone went off, and in her annoyance, she immediately played the exact tone song, same pitch, perfectly! Check out her channel, her international collaberations there, and buy her albums! I have no affiliation - just a big fan.

Try the performance of the full Tarkus at EMEAPP. She plays Tarkus on Keith's gear and does it brilliantly. Also, she doesn't improvise on ELP songs - I'll guaranty it was note for note. Her solo piano version of Karn Evil 9 Second Impression is amazing.

The most astonishing thing about Rachel is that she has no apparent limits. She keeps learning and growing musically, and while it all comes to her so naturally, she WORKS at it. Her knowledge of prog/rock is a given, but she's also deep into jazz and r&b and I've seen her dip occasionally into her classical repertoire with amazing performances of Rachmaninoff and Debussy. The first time I heard Rachel I was convinced she was the most talented musician I had ever heard. p.s. Rachel gets help with her setup, but she's a master of her recording studio and she works all the buttons, knobs, dials, and interfaces (on accessible gear and software) like a magician and can certainly plug in the cables.

There is a version of Mike Keneally playing "Zombie Woof" with The Aristocrats on TH-cam where Keneally does most of the soloing. This is from a Satriani G4 event with Joe Travers on drums and Bryan Beller on bass. They were both together in Keneally's band at one time. Then Marco Minnemann played drums for Keneally at one point, so that's how he and Beller met. Then Guthrie filled in for an ill Greg Howe at a N.A.M.M. performance and the rest is history. Keneally, Beller, and Minnemann have also toured as Satriani's backup band.

Rachel playing the Sax parts to "Take 5" was awesome :D. Yup Nick, its ELP's "Trilogy" (the 2nd track on the video), and that she's playing both the Moog and the Hammond B3 at the same time, just like Keith! Amazing. The "Module" is to her left from Moog, that Keith helped develop further (with all the wires everywhere), which was on stage with Keith as he goes NUTS "on" and all over the keyboards (especially the Hammond B3, that had to be reinforced for all his antics, and constantly re-built).
She's really "feeling" the music, and the complexity, she becomes the timing, all from her senses . . . WHO says complex music doesn't have SOUL?
GAH! Her guitar solo in Zombie Woof!!! Oh my GOD! She's freakin' "Finger Picking" it! So agile, complex and soulful!
Keneally is a beast! He was Vai's 1st "2nd" Guitarist on many tours. He knew Vai's music like the back of VAI's hands! :D His 1st 2 solo albums are incredible, insane guitaring, hilarious lyrics, much like Vai's 1st album and Zappa (a humor I relate to :p). Great stuff!
    - Again, you and Lexi MUST experience ELP "Live" to watch the 3 what they do, and Keith going NUTZ on his keyboards! Will love to hear about Lexi checking out Rachel Flowers, she's amazing :).

She's been blind from infancy. The ELP pieces she played were Trilogy and Hoedown. Many of her ELP covers (which brought her to the attention of Keith Emerson) are long, and would have taken an entire marathon, so I thought this would provide a better intro to her. She covers Emerson's piano concerto, where at one point she plays piano with one hand and flute with the other. The pinned comment for the Moog part is by Jason Rudess. Besides jamming with Dweezil's group Zappa plays Zappa, she plays flute with Thijs van Leer of Focus, and plays a well known Jaco piece on the bass. Among other things she also has ELP pieces with people playing the other parts. Her Zappa covers are great. Rewatch the Zappa piece "Inca Roads" you reacted to last year, and then listen to her version where she plays all of the parts (drum programming too). Sorry about the copyright problems today. I don't know how to check if that is going to happen when I choose music. The movie they made about her is worth checking out.

In Rachel's livestream, watch the lower right panel. She is playing the drums live on her keyboard. This is literally impossibly good.

There's a kid that does the drum cover to Zomby Woof which is also very impressive. To me that's the best part of the song, the drumming, but that guitar solo is also really good.

Very nice reaction video! You were special entertaining when Rachel played the guitar solo😁
Did you ever checked Mats & Morgan band? Mats Öberg organ and Morgan Ågren drums started to play together in 1981 when Mats was 10 and Morgan 13. They played with Frank Zappa in 1988 and in 1993 with "Zappa's Universe" including Mike Keneally. I have seen Dweezil play with Mats. Like Rachel, Mats is blind since birth. Mats and Morgan's music is sometimes to advanced even for my taste.
I am old enough to remember Beatles' breakthrough. I like music from the 60s and on through today. Interesting fact is that while in the early days most amazing artists were males while today they are often females: Besides Rachel Flowers: Tash Sultana, Tal Wilkenfeld, Samantha Fish, Jorja Chalmers, Grace Wanderwaal, Angelina Jordan, Eivor Pálsdóttir. Ok, there are males also like Jon Gomm, Damon Albarn, and Kaisers Orchestra (all males) but the difference is striking.

You aint seen nothing yet. The first time she played on a Hammond, she does Karn Evil 9 first impression. Amazing second impression on piano, she reaches into the box to stroke the piano strings a couple times to do the song the right way, like Emerson. My favorite from Rachel is Piano Concerto Number 1, a 20 minute piece from ELP Works. Please watch that one with Lex. Love yous.

Let me tell you I've been a huge ELP fan for over 50 years and I've heard dozens and dozens of "tribute" bands do their music. The only person that I have trouble distinguishing if it's Keith or not is Rachel- perhaps because she learned by ear. Emerson had a very distinctive way of playing, a kind of dissonance that few duplicate when playing ELP. Discovered Rachel some years ago and she brought tears to my eyes- a true gift from God.

Just saw this. Outstanding stream. Loved every minute of it. Been a Rachel fan for some years now and a Mike Keneally fan for about 30 years. Actually, I'm kind of a Keneally groupie. Keneally is every bit as good on keyboards as he is on the guitar.
Re: "The Aristocrats." The Keneally/Govan lineup shown here included Bryan Beller on Bass and Joe Travers on Drums. I guess it was a G4 show, but I suspect Govan joined the band for this tune. Keneally has also released a bunch of stuff with Marco Minnemann (the drummer for the Aristocrats) on a variety of projects. Mike Keneally, Joe Travers, Bryan Beller, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, The Aristocrats...It's all kind of incestuous, LOL! A few years back, Joe Satriani's touring band was Joe, Marco Minnemann, Mike Keneally and Bryan Beller. They put on a great show.
