    I too wondered how this device works. Apparently, it works by tricking your hypothalamus (helps maintain internal body temp). Your internal temp is normally ~98.6°F, but your skin (a different temp) acts as insulation constantly adjusting to maintain your internal temp. So even slight changes in skin temp can affect your internal temp. What you feel is a delta-t or temperature differential. Even a slight change in temp on your skin makes you “feel” hotter or colder. So this device causes that skin temp difference thereby tricky your body’s thermostat (hypothalamus) to adjust. All I can say is if you’re a person who is often uncomfortable then you’d probably pay the $300. 😬

    I think the idea is that there is an important vein/artery close to the surface where the palm-side of your wrist is, so it's operating on the principle of blood cooling. Whether it really works or not is debatable. I doubt it could alter it enough without being painful, and your body might start overcompensating by trying to raise your temperature instead.
    I dunno, it's hardly something I'm knowledgeable in.

    I wonder if the thermometer reading was a matter of your skin being used to the temperature. Have you ever turned on a tap, then held your hand under the water to see when it warmed up? You can feel the water getting warmer and warmer. But then, when you put your other hand in the water, it still feels cool to the touch. So your wrist might feel cold if you're expecting it, but the actual temperature might not have significantly changed...?

    So I had the idea to create basically this exact device years ago after watching an episode of "Future Weapons" where they showed a cooling chair device they use to treat heat stroke'd soldiers in the middle east, which basically pumps chilled water through wraps around the ankles and wrists and only takes minutes; and having an issue staying cool myself, particularly in the summer. I never got around to building one, though, since with a peltier device you'd have to have a big heat sink on the back to get rid of the heat drawn out of your body and possibly a fan, and the battery shouldn't be in the case otherwise the heat's just building up there (and it would be super cumbersome, as you demonstrated); all flaws I see in the device you tested.
    You have to have it around the bottom of your wrist b/c that's where the skin is thinnest and you can see all the veins and arteries (red and blue) going in/out of the hands. The idea of these devices is that it will cool your blood, and thus cool your entire body very quickly as it gets pumped around. To really test it I would've recommended taking body temperature readings (typical thermometer you'd use when sick), at increments after having the thing on; or do the same physical activity in the same temperature 3x and see how much more/less sweaty you get.

The battery operated one looks like it either Heats or cools a very small spot on your wrist where the other one seems to cools around your thumb a much larger area. I need one like that but something that last longer than an hour. Thanks

    With the thermostat registering as warm but feeling cold i'm thinking it's maybe the same principle as how body temperature works. When your body needs to cool down, the outside of your body gets hot because it's transferring the heat to try and cool the inside down. I'm terrible at wording things but hopefully that makes sense.

    as far as your readings go with your laser thermometer when you look at the app the coolest you can get out of the ember waived is -11 degrees so if ember wave has a laser thermometer type of implement in it it's going to read your body temperature of 97 98 degrees so you drop that down 10 degrees and then you know you're getting down to 81 82 degrees like your thermometer was reading and then there's a discrepancy with your laser reading the output of the ember wave so you're only gaining and losing 11 degrees either direction

    Pretty sure the embr wave is using some kind of ultrasonic wave technology to deliver heat and cold. Can't remember the name of it but there's another device out there that uses the ultrasonic wave tech for cooling but that thing is about the size of an old boombox and you stick your whole hand into it. Supposedly with that one it works so effectively they managed to get players on the US women's beach volleyball team in their ad. But I can't seem to find it online right now.

    9:00 'Strategic area' is where a lot of blood passes, or arteries. So your wrists, inner thighs, under arms, and two areas on your neck. This idea has been around for a long time, the 1920's was the first patent which was pretty much a piece of dry ice on a wrist strap. The military has also put a lot of money into this tech.

    These concept is from a college study a few years ago showing that if you heated or cooled a person's wrist they believed they were cool or or hotter. In the cooling some even sweete less. In the end they were not 100% sure how much was physio vs phycological. What they were sure of it worked for most people. Also if you put a computer heat sink on your wrist that worked as well for cooling.

    As a youngster on the farm in the 60's my grandmother had me place my wrists under cold water to help cool off. Never seemed to help much but Im guessing that the coolness is close to blood vessels close to the top of the skin. Cooling the blood would (maybe) make you feel cool. Not sure but think a person could do better putting an ice pack under their arms or around their neck.

    The vrist has vanes very close to the skin, thus efficient heat transfer and you can regulate your core temperature on these places. When you are freezing the body takes heat from your extremities. And they at some point start to shake. In those situations it would have been nice to see the product used or on a hike through a hot dessert when core temperature is on the high side. Military teaches personnel to suspend wrists in flowing river water to lower their temperature when on patrol in a very hot place

    If you want to understand how it works, read up their Kickstarter campaign page. I believe embr wave sends a pulse of temperature wave to make you feel the temperature differences (that is why your laser thermometer would not work). If staying cool or hot for a long time, your body adjusts to the temperature and want to have cooler or warmer temp. In your test, you shouldn't wear them side by side, you need to wear them individually to tell the differences because of your brain can't tell your right side of your body is cooler than your left side of the body... The technology is to trick your brain to adjust your body temperature to a cooler or warmer environment but the ambient temperature stays the same, so you would feel the temperature difference because your brain telling you to feel it...

    • @seewong642
      @seewong642 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the reason the gadget doesn't work well on you is that you are living in a hot place for so long, your body very well adapts to heat (which tells your body to cool down so well), so it will take a long time to trick your brain to do what it suppose to do. In order to work well, I think you would have to go to a cooler place or suddenly feel very cold and use the device to trick your brain feel warmer, and it should take no time to feel warmer.

      So- now my internal thermostat is just whack a doodle! Within 5 min I can go from shivering cold to really hot and then back again. It comes in extremes!
      I’ve heard other women say this as well.
      I’m so uncomfortable most of the time that it’s hard to concentrate on anything and I find myself changing clothes 7-8 times a day. Trying to find a layering option that works is difficult.

    @adamguymon7096 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Both devices are designed to help cool the blood in your wrist. The veins and arteries are closer to the surface of your skin in this area. If they were able to design a more sleeker design for the wave and design it so that the price would not be very high let's say $50 to $75 would be more than reasonable. The other one is cheaper but yes you're right it's both he and it takes longer plus it doesn't last as long. If they could change the design of the wave and change the price it might be more appealing for people to purchase the wave? Use honestly could just run your wrists under cold water and get the same effect without spending any money and it may not last as long but it might just take the eggs off every so often.

    I think the way that ember wave works is with a very simple, kinda common item called a thermoelectric peltier. These are sometimes used for seat warmers/ coolers because they can get very cold and very hot very fast with very little electricity. The only reason it could be expensive is because it needs a computer to regulate the voltage to the peltier that’s why not many car manufacturers use them but they work great! One other thing is that you felt it cold because our normal body temperature is are 98 degrees Fahrenheit so anything below that is cold but these Perrier’s are able to get way colder, so I don’t understand why it didn’t. They probably were restricting it to prevent damage to the skin. And one other thing it’s not really worth it since these sensors are not really that expensive at all so I don’t know why 300$???

    • @paulogarcia1766
      @paulogarcia1766 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The computer is not the expensive part. You can get a microcontroller and associated circuitry for literally pennies on the dollar. The expensive part is probably the housing itself and all the development for the product and software. They are a small company that only made these in a small batch. That housing looks like some fancy machine work which is expensive in low quantities. You could remake this for $50 worth of parts but its not going to look anywhere near as pretty.

    For the human body, temperature is a sensation of the difference from an individual’s body temperature. A few degrees below 98 feels cool to the skin. In nature, deep cold is more of a hazard to survival than heat so we are therefore more sensitive to it. The principle of the emberwave is effective relative to the amount of blood flow under it. Cooling neck wraps work because they are placed around major blood vessels going to and from the brain.

  • @route66flyer29

    Body temp typically is 98.6 degrees so even 82 or 88 degrees would seem cool. Cold/heat applied to the wrist should cool/heat the body as the veins are close to the surface of the skin and the warming/cooling of the blood as it circulates through the body should warm/cool the body. At least that is the thinking.
    Here's an experiment, get in the shower and let very hot water just beat on your back for 10-15 minutes dry off and see how long you sweat. Having a bad back I do that (just to limber up mu back) and when I leave the shower it takes quite awhile to cool off, even with the a/c on. LOL
