"Our great city of the West." Interesting that Wales is only mentioned in the name of the National Museum.

Videos from the 80s: "Wow! How much it has changed!" Videos from the 30s: "Wow! How little it has changed!" (That doesn't apply to the docks.)

My father did too, he came from Gabalfa and it was common back then to swim in the lake. Also, Llandaff fields had an open air swimming pool which I swam in as a girl. Sadly, things don't often change for the better.

Cardiff went into decline in the late 60,s and thatcher killed it off when she came to power. The greatest coal export docks in the world no longer exists. I was born in Cardiff 1962

Nothing to do with Thatcher ~ Cardiff's decline is mostly due to the criminally incompetent City Councils, over decades, who have been destroying everything in sight. Devolution didn't help either. It just gave yet another Government layer to be paid for out of local money, that otherwise could be spent on improvents and/or preservation.

It happened long before then, the big closures of pits started in 1945, nationalisation took place in 47 and then the pit closures were fairly rapid.
Aside from the declining docks, the other big bodyblow was the closure of East Moors Steelworks in 1978, the 70 s also saw a lot of small/medium manufacturing dissappear.
You have to ask questions of politicians, not just at national but local level, Cardiff today is run by some pretty inept councillors.
