    1. Use straplocks.
    2. Loop your cable throught the strap so it doesn't rip out if you step on it.

Or if you don't want to change the strap buttons on your guitar, Grolsch bottle seals make great locks. Google image search for Grolsch straplocks and you'll see how many famous people use them to protect their expensive guitars. Oh, and they come with free beer when you buy them :)

Looking back on it, I found the single most important thing was to start using the position markers on the side of the neck rather than the markers on the fretboard itself.

Danang Alessandro i think the opposite. Usually low strap people look like noobs who play power chords which there’s nothing wrong with that. But when I think of super high strap people I think of snobby jazz players or just actual jazz players who don’t even play with a strap but when they do, they have to have it up to their chin

I have just started lessons and my teacher encourages use of a footstool and playing with the guitar on your left leg. (like you would have to have it with a flying V). It has already made the transition to standing up easier as it rests the guitar at more of an angle similar to how it is when you stand up. It's also allowed me to have more free movement in my arms and fingers when reaching the higher frets. At home I don't have a foot stool so I just lower my right leg but it's another good way to practise.

Thanks for the advice Marty and your other videos. I’ve followed your advice, and others, to always practice with a strap, seated or standing at the same height and it works well. One thing I haven’t heard too many people talk about is the impact on your playing if you are a beginner or intermediate. I’ve been playing for about three years now almost exclusively sitting. When I started practicing standing up, it was hard at first not being able to see the fretboard, but I quickly developed a feel for where to put my fingers to play chords or pick individual notes. I noticed that when I sit, I don’t feel the need to stare down the fretboard anymore making it easier and more fun to play. I am much more accurate using senses other than mostly eyesight. I wish I did this sooner.

Hey, Marty - thanks for tackling basic topics like this. One topic I'd like to see discussed is how long it takes to not to suck at guitar. I know it's different for everyone, but everyone starts at the beginning and we progress from there and seem to end up and wildly different levels of ability due to different factors. I realize this topic has lots of factors like aptitude, time spent practicing, etc., but in my mind there has to be some generic "after playing and practicing daily for X months/years you should likely be able to play at X level". If you could tackle this topic I'd appreciate it.

I prefer mine Bellow my waist. The reason why is so I can be more relaxed and play faster especially on songs like Sadistic Dismemberment. The hand positioning on the fretboard is very natural there and I can easily switch between fingers and a pick.

I use a strap when sitting too, always have better control of the guitar (fretting quick chord changes, for example). I'd suggest strap locks if you are playing out a lot especially if you are using an expensive (pro grade) instrument. I prefer sitting when solo, standing in ensemble. Good food for thought Marty. Someone asked do you lie strap locks Marty? Btw happy thanksgiving and thanks for all the great lessons you've posted over the years.

I have like four different straps here and every one of them has dropped a guitar at one time or another. Thankfully no damage but, I'm certainly not ready to trust another strap.

A question: does anyone know a way to reinforce the end-parts of a guitar strap? The flappy parts that the strap buttons of the guitar go through. I feel like those are likely to tear under the weight of the guitar and I'd like to know if there's a way to prevent that.

I don't know if it's turkey I smell, but I'm pretty sure it's that heartbreaker solo lesson!
whatever it is it smells great though

Make sure to plug and play. Try as many different types of guitar as you can to find the right fit for you. If you want those slash tones, lean towards a solid body with humbuckers. Good luck and have fun

EliteMaster123 The tabs for Hotel California on songster.com seemed to be pretty accurate and that's how I learned the solo. Idk if that helps, but I just thought I'd put it out there

Hey can you review some Schecter guitars? Not for metal, but guitars with passive pick-ups for blues music? They make great guitars. They are underrated in my opinion..

Is it good practice to play with a strap man sitting down due to guitar neck positioning and posture?
