When Disney bought the (albeit limited) rights back a few years ago, Oswald had a huge presence in DCA. Alas, nobody cared as much as the company had hoped they would.
@Joan Alegria Roig Well the second epic mickey game was technically the end of the epic mickey franchise and was far better than the first game. The epic mickey games also sparked a lot of popularity for Oswald with young pre-teens and teenagers primarily. Which then sparked a small fandom based around Oswald and everything about him. Though I feel like Disney is planning something big for Oswald sometime in the future.
@@Its_Asteria Well, there is a Rumor about a Oswald Series going around and as Michael Eisner said a few years ago. "Oswald has a great future ahead of him" and I don't think that he just meant some merchandise and cameos!
I just watched this video with my 7 year old son who LOVES Oswald. I don't know where the love started but our first trip to Disneyland my son picked out a pair of Oswald ears. He looked so adorable in them and he takes them with us every trip now. Over the past few trips he has picked out Oswald pins, a plush, etc. We're always shocked and bummed at how little there is to represent Oswald..but then again we should appreciate that he's even represented at all. When my son met Oswald in DCA he was the happiest..it was the best character experience we'd ever had. He totally played and joked with my son for a good 5 minutes or so and interacted with his Oswald plush he had purchased that day. We thoroughly enjoyed the history in this video so thanks for sharing!
He's in California adventure and his meet and greet times are usually once a day. You can find him either early in the morning an hour after california adventure opens or later in the afternoon
the best part of the story is that walt and minsk later met at the premier of snow white i think it was and walt being walt greeted and treated him like an old friend. A man who almost brought the company to its knees and no sign of dislike towards him!
Oswald was stolen from Disney in the same way Spyro was stolen from Insomniac and Crash was stolen from Naughty Dog. Yeah, they technically never owned the rights, but they should have.

It still works to this day and I hope there might be an Xbox port of some sort. I kind of forgot about Oswald when I was younger until I got the first game and I was like "Ooohh so that's Oswald"
I've known about Oswald for decades, but I'm a film/tv professional who has been studying animation history since the 80s, so I wouldn't expect most to have known about such (at the time) obscure characters.
Disney:we’re not thirsty for money we just want for children to be happy Also Disney when they realized Mickey made more money than Oswald:you know the rules and so do I...
Exactly! Disney had way more than enough money to buy the rights to the character! Given how Universal was overall indifferent to the character by the 1950's, it would've been a Golden opportunity! But he didn't do that! Why? Because he had Mickey! If buying the rights to Oswald was ever a priority to Walt Disney it sure as heck wasn't a big one!
The reason he kisses his foot at the start is because when Walt Disney made oswald they made him a rabbit and a saying back in the day was "a rabbits toe is good luck" and also the second oswald short had him kissing his foot so he didn't die as good luck
Great vid!!! I love Oswald he is my absolute favorite disney character and I wish he had a bigger part to play in disney!! #BringBackOswald WHOS WITH ME
I say that Charles Mintz did steal Oswald and was eventually caught by Carl Lammle and fired! But Lammle couldn’t give the lucky rabbit to his former employee because his company was still in need of a Star.
It happens all the time even today. A lot of companies have you give up any rights to your creations upon hire. Even if you credit on your own time with your own resources. Walt created the winning rabbit and the personality of the character. Sounds like he was the creator.
Hearing Oswald's origin story (in different formats) never bore me. Looking at the first few comments, I do agree that Oswald could use a bit more screentime, and I never got the chance to play the Epic Mickey games due to the lack of owning a Wii. I still kept a free catalog with his appearance from Best Buy, as well a shirt, small plush and hat from DCA. I can't afford the pretty and heavy stuff, as much I want a display statue of that Lucky Rabbit!
Oswald was a memorable character to me! But when he was bought by someone else or whatever happened after that, there was something in me that wanted to “avenge” his former home. But this was a really thoughtful video, so thanks so much and hope you have a wonderful day! I remember meeting Oswald at DCA! He was a very satisfying experience! Bye now!😊👍 Any idea why this video was re-uploaded?
Alright so I am a major Oswald fanatic and I have seen all original 28 episodes(well, those found as some of them are lost) made by Disney. I like to scout these kinds of videos and find flaws in Oswald’s history that some people think are truth. And I have to say. You got every single thing correct! Also the funny thing is. I forgot that the treasury set was limited edition. Wish I remember where I stored it now. Anyway. I hope you can join the hunt for the rest of the original Oswald cartoons!
Yes and thanks. I have a habit of losing Oswald merch. I have a bought a total of 3 Oswald Ear Hats because I kept losing them on an airplane. Also question. Do you happen to have the limited Epic Mickey 2 Oswald Ears? I think you had to go to some conference thing to get them. And friend gave me them for my birthday.
When Hugh Harmon and Rudolf Ising began to direct shorts for Warner Brothers, they made sure they kept any characters they created. So when they left after kicking dust with producer Leon Schlesinger, they took Bosko and Honey with them to their own MGM studio. But after going over budget their studio was replaced by one overseen by Fred Quimby. Harmon and Ising joined Quimby's studio but they never brought back Bosko and Honey. Likewise, Ubbe Iwwerks more or less discarded Flip the Frog and Willie Whopper after his studio was shut down due to bankruptcy. Even Betty Boop went unused for forty-five years. Lantz was different. Even when Woody Woodpecker became the face of his studio, he did not abandon Oswald. He kept him alive in comic books for over twenty years. He would implore Universal to merchandise the character along with Woody and his other characters. He appeared in publicity images as well. As marginal as it was and how little the character resembled his earlier design, Lantz made an effort to ensure the character was not completely forgotten. If you can't find anything magnanimous or at least charitable in that, then I have failed. But if you can, then I succeeded. And I bid you good day.
Wow its interesting how all these people in the cartoon industry are connected : Disney , Freleng, The Harman and Ising even Walter Miintz and teh flesicher studios
Charles Muntz, the main antagonist of Up, is inspired by Charles Mintz to reflect how demanding and sometimes villainous Mintz was to Disney, despite being his boss. This is why Mintz demanded Disney to create a new cartoon character and steal it from him just like how Muntz demanded Carl to hand over Kevin to him and later stealing it. (This is all speculation and a conspiracy created by me. I’m not saying any of this is true).
Oswald was "stolen" from Walt Disney the same way almost all the Disney characters were created by Disney employees who don't own their own creations, everything you make for Disney is a work for hire that they will own. Copyright laws are really unfair, they need to be reformed to benefit more the people and less the companies, although the concept of work for hire should stay, it isn't unfair, if you pay someone to make something for you, you own it, not the one who made it, be more careful when signing a contract.
