Fort Campbell Layens Horizontal Hive Installation

  • Today we introduced a colony of Honey Bees to a brand new nineteen frame Layens horizontal hive. We have dedicated this hive and the site where it sits to my Grandfather Jim Campbell. Jim lived his life by spreading kindness and goodwill to everyone around him and was truly an inspiration to our entire family.
    We know the bees are going to love their new home. A hive like this takes a while to build but in the end it is worth the effort!

      I've been to the website and will probably end up just buying a hive because I don't have all the tools or time right now to build one, but thank you for the info.

    Good looking hive. Any idea how long the swarm was in your swarm trap? We have gotten 5 swarm boxes built for 7 frames, and have bought the 2x10s for our hive boxes. That's going to be our winter project. Good luck with Fort Campbell!

    • @SecureAcresNaturalBees
      @SecureAcresNaturalBees  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This swarm was in the tree a few months before we moved them. Generally we only wait three weeks but we got a little back logged with all of our farm work. Thank you so much and good luck!

    Great looking Hive. Did you build these off Online Plans? Best of Luck!

      We get the basic plans from "www.horizontalhive.com". Here you can find plans for building hives, swarm hives, and many other Bee related items absolutely free thanks to Dr. Leo Sharashkin!

    Great job on the hive! Is the top 4 inches of your hive insulated? I left that part of my hive open except with some 1/2 inch Styrofoam insulation and I use that section to place a Rapid Round feeder with dry sugar for emergency winter feed. I am in upper South Carolina so not as much insulation needed. You may also want to add another link or 2 to the chains. It will make it easier to get frames out. You should be proud of your hive because they are not easy to make. I have made 3 Langstroth horzontal 32 frame hives.

    • @SecureAcresNaturalBees
      @SecureAcresNaturalBees  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello!
      Yes the top 4 inches are insulated with sheep wool! Yes the links for the top are a little short but the reason we did this is the top was so heavy it was causing the hive to lean over so we had to keep the top somewhat over the hive.
      That's neat about the langstroth horizontal, haven't tried that.

    Big fan and complete Newbee. Why are you not mixing in empty frames? thanks

    • @SecureAcresNaturalBees
      @SecureAcresNaturalBees  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Edie,
      Generally when we start a new colony that's a little late in the season we don't put in new frames right away. This is because they don't have much time to build storage before winter so we let them keep whatever they can produce.

    I noticed you didn't put any Halloween decorations on the house.... Other than that huge oversight i love it.

    Question for you. I see you don’t have any middle support bars on your Layens frames. Do you find that they don’t need it is you wire or fish line than? It would be helpful to know. Hey, I’m going to try to catch a swarm next year in NYC!!!

    • @SecureAcresNaturalBees
      @SecureAcresNaturalBees  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good luck on the swarm catching!
      I don't think the middle bars are necessary but I know some people go with them. Our frames have never had cross comb and the comb goes all the way down the frame with no issues.

    Great dedication to Grandfather Jim Campbell!!! Layens hives has been important in cold weather regions all over the world, but they are being used in all climates now. They have to bee a great hive to use and they make strong hives from what I have seen. Looking forward to seeing these hives in action this year. Are you in progress of making more hives this year?

    • @SecureAcresNaturalBees
      @SecureAcresNaturalBees  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Rickey!
      Thank you very much, he meant the world to us. I sent you an email just saying Hey because I was unable to comment on your channel. Anyways thanks for the sub, we subbed to yours as well.
      You're very close to us over in Creston, I go through West Jefferson all the time. We're located in Traphill NC right at the base of Stone Mountain.
      Yes going to be making a lot more hives this year. We plan on hanging ten swarm hives and that means we need to have ten Layens hives ready. We'll probably be building many more that are of the quality that you see in this video.
      Thanks for stopping by!

      @@SecureAcresNaturalBees Your hives are very nice would love to see them in action and for you to explain a little more about them. I have many Utube friends in the Ukraine and they love these hive. One gentleman is a commercial beekeeper there and he has over 100 Layens hives in his bee yard. I love sending people to his site when they say you can't bee a commercial beekeeper with these hives or bee don't go horizontal. Everyone has there ideals what is best for the bees and I always try to be nice to everyone's ideas.

    • @SecureAcresNaturalBees
      @SecureAcresNaturalBees  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@horizontalbees3480 Haha I've never had people tell me Bee's don't go horizontal. But I guess after watching a few our videos how could they? :P
      I know a lot of Europeans use Layens, and many in Russia as well. It seems to excel in colder climates but it's also good at protecting against hot climates too. I saw on one of your videos you said you were using 1-1/2" lumber for your hives and that's great insulation.
      Have you tried your hand at swarm catching? It's very easy and the Bees you get usually have high success rates!

    • @horizontalbees3480
      @horizontalbees3480 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SecureAcresNaturalBees Yea I caught 3 swarms last year. One of the swarm was about the size of a soft ball and I left it up for about 3 week and when I took it down there was no queen inside just all those bees. I think it was a virgin swarm and she went to get mated and got killed. I agree these swarms do great!! I also had a friend call me up and his bees had swarm and we caught them and box them up. LOVE this action!! I have 4 boxes ready to go this year.
      Hey when do you set your traps out? I was late last year because I was making my boxes.

    Thank you. If I took my old langstroth frames with comb and laid them in the bottom of my Laydens hive, would the bees move up to my new Laydens frames?

    • @SecureAcresNaturalBees
      @SecureAcresNaturalBees  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Andy,
      If you were able to fit the Langstroth comb on the Layens frame then yes they could adapt to it.
      Check out www.horizontalhive.com and I think they might have plans for how to do this.

      Yes we do build our own hives. I've thought about a how to video and maybe that's something we can do in the future.
