Maynard Ferguson performance of the Westside Story theme Maria was masterful. He is without a doubt one of the greatest trumpet players who ever lived. I can’t believe nobody has commented on this before. Mediocre performers get millions of hits yet genius performers get Little to no recognition.
Douglas got his own start as a big band leader in the forties. This always kept him appreciative of this musical genre. Note the high note cat in the trumpet section itself. Bearded dude with shades, second from right. Barker is his last name. Wasn't it "Rusty Barker"? Maybe Randy. He pops a dandy G/High C (for the B Flat trumpet!) At 3:23. Damned good note and chops. In his master class Stan Mark describes Barker and Ron Toomey (black trumpet player far right and next to Barker) as being "the better high note guys" than he was. Even though Mark's tone cut through like a laser beam. Stan Mark really did blow a fine lead.
Sedolas was on Amherst st right? I graduated in 76 Bobby Militelo Mike Migliore, I saw Maynard once in the back room at Mulligans on Hertel ave and you know how iconic it was back there with Keith Perla D,Jaying putting on a record and coming out and dancing with us, what a great time back there
I grew up in this era...and I remember his show quite well. I astounds me that this kind of entertainment was on at 4:30 in the afternoon. We took it for granted back then.
Birdland ( Joe Zawinul). Gordon Johnson - bass; Joe Mosello, Stan Mark, Ron Tooley - trumpets; Bobby Militello - bari sax/ flute.Possibly Eric Traub- tenor sax.
Masterful flute solo from 6:23 by Bobby Militello, who would become a fixture with Dave Brubeck. At this point Militello's flute playing was arguably more prominent than his sax work (and don't miss his solos on "Canon for Flutes" alongside Thijs van Leer on 1977's live album Montreux Summit.)
Birdland was written by Austrian keyboard player Joe Zawinul (1932-2007). According to his obituary, Zawinul came to the U.S. in 1959 to attend Berklee but within a week accepted an offer to join Maynard's band. He later joined Dinah Washington's band & spent a lot of the 60's with Cannonball Adderley. Zawinul wrote 'Mercy, Mercy, Mercy' while with Adderley. Zawinul, Wayne Shorter & Miroslav Vitous founded Weather Report in 1970, and it later included former MF drummer Peter Erskine.

No entertainment like this today. Mike Douglas had a great show back in the day.

I missed a lot of great concerts in my day BUT! Saw Maynard at least 10 times every time he was in Buffalo NY and he blew us away every time!

Bobby and Mike. From Buffalo. Sedola students!!!!🎷
Oh wow! I went to Lafayette h.s. 4 years in polencars music class. Was it John Sedola?

Bobby Militello used to play a solo with incredible multiphonics and circular breathing that was a show stopper.
wish there was a recording or video.
This video captures a wonderful set of musicians (actors!) having a great time. there's so much history between the principals. lovely!
Greatest human being that ever played the trumpet, maybe, greatest trumpet player ever, YES!!!
I never realized how many times mike douglas had Maynard on great show that night
Love love love that time!
Gordon Johnson on bass !!!!! WOW He and his brother Jimmy are two of the "BADDEST" BASS PLAYERS I've ever heard !!!!!!!
Bob Militello is the BOMB!!!!
Ah the days when a big jazz band would actually air on national TV.
That was the golden age of the trumpet. Just think of all the great trumpet players at that time. Today there are almost none.
God Bless Maynard, Sarah, and Lou.

Kinda strange that Peter Erskine played Birdland with MF before he did with Weather Report
I was just thinking the same thing when I saw this video just now
Never thought of that. I seen both groups perform this tune. I loved 🥰 both but Maynard Ferguson was my hero.
Gotta love Lou Rawls
triple Ab at the end of Maria. Damn.
That is Bobby Militelo on the baritone horn and flute. He is much bigger now but just as great as ever!
I was fortunate enough to see Bobby Militelo with Maynard many years ago. What an imagination.
Yesssss
Love Bobby Militello on flute!

Just after the Mark Colby left for a solo career (tenor sax)
give it a try i used to be a trumpet player 1979
Stan blew off the high F on the intro. Must have forgot to drink his can of Coke.
YE!
Maynard and the band tolerating the walking annoyance Jerry Lewis.
your right! jerry the jerk!
Jerry being Jerry.
Yes, Jerry being Jerry. Nevertheless I'd like to be able to do what Jerry did.
Ironically, Peter Erskine would go on to play with none other than Josef Zawinul and Weather Report.
Sara Vaughn and Lou rauls Mike can't get close to those two, but he is not really that bad
I didn't think that Mike was all that bad. It's tough when you make comparisons. They are all good.
What year was this?
Was this Weather Report, composition? If not Weather Report, imitation perhaps ( something entitled here : twisted Tales.)

Dennis Noday!
He had moved on to play lead for Kenton by this time.
Other than Stan Mark and I think the black guy is Jon Faddis....who is the trumpet section??
Trumpets L-R: Joe Mosello, Stan Mark, Dennis Noday and Ron Tooley
@@twistedtrails8128 Great trumpet section.
Thats a triple C
Imo Sara Voghn blows them all away
I think Jerry Lewis was ready to cream his pants!
Dreadful sound ba;ance, surely a band as good as this deserves better
