Clearly Triumph have not. For years we wanted an RS version with better suspension and brakes. We got that but not with a budget off centre dash, a more cramped riding position and a massive price hike. That is not what we asked for.
Do you know what’s worst then a single cheap looking digital clock on a beautiful motorcycle? An offset cheap looking digital clock on a beautiful motorcycle.
The dash is horrible, ugly, cheap looking and asymmetrical. Who the hell at Triumph HQ are signing off on these design briefs? Huge swing and miss Triumph on what could have been a best seller model if it had asthetically beautiful clocks and cruise control as standard.
Agreed. Was told by someone at Triumph HQ that they did the offset clock to allow it easier for people to add GPS or phones on the opposite side. I call bs bad design is bad design.
Triumph could redeem themseves and offer an classic styled accessory gauge cluster. Truth is people looking seriously at this machine would buy it. BMW have been offering a similar option on some of the classic themed models but come standard with classic guages, with a TFT screen as optional replacement.
@@TheOzbernieIt would be interesting to know how many people spec the tft on the bmw as a percentage of sales. Maybe triumph should of done the same to test the market, not just force it.
The Speed Twin has just become waaay to expensive for what it is. And don't get me started about that clock.. The Yamaha XSR 900 has the same tech, more power, less weight and a similar design language with a modern digital display and is cheaper! The Kawa Z900RS is about what the Speed Twin used to be. Retro Bike, great looks (twin clocks) and more than a enough power.
The fact it does not have twin analogue clocks makes it a very hard pass from me. I spend all day looking at my computer, and I don't want to look at another one when im riding.
The Speed Twin RS in U.S money is $18'473. My new Thruxton R with the Triumph quarter fairing, Vance & Hines exhaust, tec bike cam installed, DNKtune and Michelin Road 6s installed is $17,702. My bike has 101 rwhp which is probably more than the Speed Twin RS plus I have nicer instruments. I understand the purpose for the original 1200 Speed Twin but turning the RS into Thruxton R lite doesn't ring my bell. I'd rather they just improved the suspension of regular Speed Twin and kept it more comfortable with dual instruments. To me the new Speed Twin RS is less than the older Speed Twin and the defunct Thruxton RS.
Clocks, tank size, price. Buy a 2023 model and upgrade suspension. Also the clock/ignition cluster is offset, which looks shit. Oh and as you got me going, the paint scheme is trying too hard on the RS and childish on the standard model. You ain't getting my money, Triumph.
I own a ‘24 Kawasaki Z900 rs and it has analog speedo and tach, an in-line 4 cylinder motor with 4-1 exhaust. Modern updates include: liquid cooling, fuel injection, traction control, and a mono-shock. It’s fast, nimble and could be the perfect bike. Plus it was only about US $ 12,500 😎
@ Maybe we have different definitions of Nimble, I love the handling. It’s the first bike that I was able to completely remove the chicken strips on the rear tire. Perhaps you’re Mr. Trackday???
I understand the dash thing but fitting a budget one from the 660 is a parts bin no no and no matter how much Triumph try to spin it they could and should have fitted a better quality centralised one, say similar to the lovely looking one on the latest Indian FTR 1200. There is no excuse for Triumph's cost cutting here and charging a whopping 14.5 k for it. Triumph need to do better. The competition is so strong in this sector now Triumph need to be more honest with the price. The Z900 rs se is very similar in spec and weight but costs less and looks nicer especially with those lovely analogue twin clocks.
They ruined the otherwise perfect bike with ugliest possible dash on the market nowadays. Two thumbs down for that and at the same time two thumbs up for everything else, the problem is that while you ride this bike you will always see those two thumbs down, sad really 😢 BMW with R12 nine T, made up best possible solution (you can choose what you prefer more) kids digital, man analog and that’s it. simple as that.
I have the same dash on my Trident. Not the most exciting, not affected by the sun, shows everything you need to see, uncomplicated and clear and is cool to look at in the dark. I sat on one a Motorcycle live, lovely bike but I agree with you, the switchgear isn't premium enough, it's just lifted from the cheaper Trident.
@ it suits Trident, just fine, but it is out of place on Speed Twin / Bonneville style of motorcycle, it is my opinion and as I can see majority of enthusiasts share the same. It is not too late for Triumph to change decision or at least to offer proper gauge to whole lineup. Im pretty sure that they will sell few of new dash if any. And Im also pretty sure that if they stay stubborn they will lose huge amount of potential buyers new as well as old ones. Will see, time will tell.
No cruise control? That's the biggest reason I won't buy it! My Scrambler 1200 XE has it, why can't this? Post right wrist surgery, cruise control is the only way I can do any lengthy ride without suffering for days afterwards. Not a fan of the offset clocks or colour schemes. A friend has a '24 Speed Twin and the ergo's are a bit upright, this should be interesting to compare...
As many others have already said, the single digital clock is a cheap step backwards and it being offset is odd. We spend a lot of time looking at the gauges on a bike while riding. I prefer the classic dual clocks over this. Also, the paint scheme with the RS and funky stripes detract from the lines of the bike in a bad way.
I own a 2022 ST 1200 with upgraded rear suspension. Wouldn’t buy the new RS as it’s too expensive, I don’t like the dash or the colours. Disappointing as I was looking forward to the RS being a significant upgrade to the ST 1200.
I bought the R12 NineT with analog clocks. Specced it up with headlight fairing and black bits. Looking at this…. without the spoke wheels and weird clock… I think I spent my money correctly…. though… I should have just kept the money for a holiday. 😅
Hate to say it...but I prefer the look of the last model. The clock is just, the clash of garish colours, and the stripes on the tank on a different line to the fins on the engine just grates me.
Beautiful bikes, but unfortunately a step backwards from the MY24 model. The standard bike is lower spec, but more money then the previous bike. If they are still available in your area, try and get the MY24 runout model and save a few bucks.
I test rode one this year, loved the looks, hated the engine, kept missing the lever on up shifts and with my Sidi boots on I couldn't put the side stand down, fortunately back at the dealer after sitting outside beeping the horn a customer came and helped me out saying it was a common problem with those kind of boots.
Yeah sport boots are hard to flick it down, flat sole shoes or casual boots are much easier. Still dumb they didn't reposition it or stick the nub out farther
The old clock can cope with 3 riding modes, cruise control. Triumph’s reasoning for switching the clocks out doesn’t make any sense, just pure cost cutting.
Thank you for a balanced review and your candid comments on the what`s left of the retro look. Like a lot of the other comments, the clocks for me are the main item that tips into sporty modern. There are no retro styling chassis parts left on it anymore. Shame...
BOB I love your video's , but a owner of 8 bikes with 2 being Triumphs at 23 Speed Twin and 2016 1200 thruxton . I think Triumph have destroyed the Speed Twin the dash is horrible and the tank is terrible they also should have used black fork tubes on the RS and black piggy back Ohlins , the Gold looks rubbish on a retro bike . Great video again Motobob and a very improved bike from Triumph in many regards. We, the classic line customers, like a little bit of modernity but not too much. Not everything in the world that is new is also better. Please leave us the option to choose our dials. Cheers
These resent modern triumphs in my experience is like putting a tank into reverse while going forward. Have they overcome the gear backlash as I have found them disappointing
I prefer the original before they moved to upside down forks. Since then, i’ve struggled with seeing the later revisions getting more modern styling cues, namely random bolt on plasticky looking bits. I still think the T120 is the best looking naked modern classic. I do know one thing though, it will be a fantastic bike to ride!! All Triumphs are.
So would the R12 Nine T be a more comfortable bike, especially for someone who is 172cm? I'm concerned mainly with comfort while doing longer rides, rather than getting feet to the ground.
Bolt nice bits to what looks increasingly like a vintage flavoured UJM? Between this and them flooding the market with cheap 400s, Triumph is losing that premium, distinct brand image.
i think the biggest part of a retro bike should be the motor. These 270deg parallel twins I think lack a bit of the character of the true retro boxer or 260 parallel twins.
Why not 180 rear tyre all that torque is wasted if the tyres cant keep them going .... this level of torque will eat off that 160 tyre every 4-6 months if you ride hard and good
Ive a Triumph fanboy for about 10 years now. In facts i have two in my garage right now. A 2019 ST900 and a 2023 Thruxton RS. While Im happy i have both bikes i think Triumph has lost its prime unfortunatelym theyve ruined ruined the brand by designing this bike with an offset single clock, horrid headlight and insane price for what theyre offering. Theyve completely ditched the classic in modern classic. I suppose its time that RE dethrone them across the board. Sad to say app of this but mark my words this will sell worse than either the current st or thruxton.
These new Speed Twins just don't look properly Retro enough anymore like the early models. Lost the gorgeous twin clocks for a plastic digital screen. Plasticy cheap looking grey headlight bezel. Uglier tank paint jobs with hideous giant cutouts in the front so they can fit the new inverted front forks that just look out of place on a retro rather than the classic upright forks with some fork boots. Should have just kept the truly retro styling of the early models and given it better components that don't take away from the look. Why would I spend $15,000 + for these when I can get a used 2019-2021 Speed Twin that looks so much better and performs 90% as well for half the price. Throw on some upgraded shocks and some better brakes and now I have a Speed Twin that performs 95% as well and looks 10 times better.
Dash ruins it unfortunately as it’s something you look at regularly, they should have done either 2 clocks or at least one but in the centre maybe 2 as an extra.. sorry triumph miss for me shame as the rest looks very nice.. Pete
I used to have an XJR 1300 SP which I think is a very similar bike. I loved the look of the thing but it never seemed to do anything perfectly except sit there and look great. On long runs the lack of a fairing made it painful. It had loads of power but anything above 70mph felt like you'd were using gym equipment. City commutes were what killed it for me though as you felt there was a continual battle going on beneath the seat between inertia and power. In the wet the rear end would spin up and the front always wanted to slide. I'd guess ABS and modern technology improves things but I'll not get another litre plus naked bike. Obviously YMMV.
The more I see this the more I don’t like it, it’s just not a modern classic anymore colours and graphics are terrible and we all know what everyone thinks about that dash, it’s a hard pass from me I’ll take a bobber
They've seemed to have ditched classic as a brand and went with oddly modern. Someone asked why they did this on their insta feed yesterday and they legit responded "if you want classic go look at the t120". They've lost it.
@@FunWithAJyeah I saw that response by triumph they obviously have no idea about their customers, if someone wants a modern sportier bike they would just save £2,500 and buy a 765 RS
Nah, not a chance. This is not a £14,500 motorcycle. Nice as it may be. I rather stick to Japan Inc®™. Specially the Z900RS if they give it next year all the updates the base Z900 got for 2025. The Yamaha looks a little wonky to me but it's one hell of machine if looks are not important to you. EDIT: The mono gauge looks like shit. They could have worked something out while still using 2 pods.
It’s a shame the twin pods are gone . Could you do a comparison with the new Brixton 1200 bike please. With the price point it would be so interesting. I am at the moment confused which one to consider buying as Triumph has overpriced its bikes.
I've watched 'the' three reviews (so far) on the new ST 1200, and as yet, no one has given much focus on the sound, which is an important factor imho... Being an owner of the Gen 2, which has bags of character; a chorus of pops and burbles, especially off throttle, down hill etc, so I am very interested to learn more about the sound coming from this Gen 3/Euro 5.5 version???
The big advantage with the BMW RS is the shaft drive, having owned 2 , is a major advantage. I’ve also owned a Triumph,so I know this bike would make it a very tough decision. Only a seat of pants test ride would settle the issue. Love the orange paintwork.
I care a whole lot less about gauges than I do about extra weight. 75lbs overweight? Also prefer more classic paint and styling. Still, I love this line of bikes, especially the up spec suspension.
Don't bike manufacturers ever listen to customer feed back?
Twin clocks Triumph.

no they don't listen.
Triumph use to. Not any more. Seems Royal Enfield is pulling ahead in that regard.
“Eat this, and you’re going to like it!”

Twin clocks!

Is the SPEED TWIN 900 a viable first bike for a more mature beginner rider (30yo)? eventually build up skills to something like the 1200rs
Absolutely.
Yes it's a great bike! You might not feel the need to upgrade for a while.
Well at least Kawasaki kept the analogue dials-clocks on their z650rs & z900rs 😎🥳🎉
The new tech is good but it’s not retro anymore
Nah, not a chance.
This is not a £14,500 motorcycle.
Nice as it may be.
I rather stick to Japan Inc®™.
Specially the Z900RS if they give it next year all the updates the base Z900 got for 2025.
The Yamaha looks a little wonky to me but it's one hell of machine if looks are not important to you.
EDIT: The mono gauge looks like shit. They could have worked something out while still using 2 pods.
BMW R12 Nine T is a much better option.
What were they thinking with the clocks? I know the digital ones are cheaper but they’ve spoiled the bike 😢
It’s a shame the twin pods are gone . Could you do a comparison with the new Brixton 1200 bike please. With the price point it would be so interesting. I am at the moment confused which one to consider buying as Triumph has overpriced its bikes.
I hope someone from triumph reads comments on videos like this because that dash is fugly and universally disliked
Looks cheap but asking more. Z900rs looks way better for the money. Triumph is losing its appeal.
The tft makes speed twin in competition with bmw xr, Kawasaki z9r, street triple, s1000r amongst many bikes. No longer just a retro bike
Thank U I Totally Agree👍✌️👍
What’s that white HJC helmet you use? Can you specify the model name?
😂Premier
What's your height mate? You're completely flat footed on this bike
I think he said onetime he's 5'9"
How about riders height ? Im 192cm wondering if it ll fit ...
I only wish that Triumph fire the person in charge that has decided this horrible dash ....he/she is clearly working for Triumph competitors..
I think I prefer the original speed twin
Cycle parts are so 😍 beautiful....
The big advantage with the BMW RS is the shaft drive, having owned 2 , is a major advantage. I’ve also owned a Triumph,so I know this bike would make it a very tough decision. Only a seat of pants test ride would settle the issue.
Love the orange paintwork.
Those exhausts are already badly heat coloured, lots of polishing or accept the rust in short time. Look very cheap.
That new gauge is a dealbreaker to me..
I care a whole lot less about gauges than I do about extra weight. 75lbs overweight? Also prefer more classic paint and styling. Still, I love this line of bikes, especially the up spec suspension.
