This is long but I hope it helps explain where we are in the trailer. Anduin's young. By this point he's probably about 25-28. At Battle for Azeroth's start, he was barely 20. He's unsure because he got thrown into the kingship at 18 with Varian's death. He hovers between the Warrior king and the Priest, trying to serve both and that is a burden, along with the kingdom. He barely gets the war finished, the dead buried, when Zovall the Jailer's minions literally grab him and drag him to Hell. There were others taken when Anduin was kidnapped, Baine (Tauren ruler), Thrall, and Jaina. The Jailer was looking for someone to control and it wasn't until Anduin pulled the Light to let us (the champion) out of a portal to save us from him, that the Jailer figured out who would be best. Everyone else was pretty much left alone and we rescued them. Sylvanas, whose not been a friend to the Wrynn family, is working with the Jailer. She freed Bolvar from the helm of the Lich King when she took it and split it. Bolvar comes to the Shadowlands to help find Sylvanas and stop her. She's trying to get Anduin to go along with the Jailer's "Plan" to stop death from happening (why the hell she's thinking that's going to work is beyond me) and Anduin's not having it. She tries to reason with him but then the Jailer says "enough" and makes her take him. The sword he carries, Shalamayne, has been reworked with the Jailer's runes and has a new, blue light in it, and is renamed Kingsmourne. She uses it to dominate Anduin and then the Jailer takes over and subjugates him by putting domination runes into his armor. He's really not undead or a lich, he is like a dominated pawn. When he goes to kill the Archon (not the Arbitor), he's being the Trojan Horse for Zovall. Anduin's light and energy gets Zovall into Elysian Hold past the guards. When he gets to the Archon, she recognizes Zovall and tells him to let go of the human but he stabs her instead, taking the sigil she wears. He's going to end up with all of the sigils, which will give him power to take over the ...universe?? (that was never really clear). As he steps back from the stabbing, Anduin surfaces inside himself, seeing what has transpired and is horrified, but is subjugated back into as Zovall takes over again. Then he is forced by Zovall (Jailer) to get the other sigils, each with deception, and other bad deeds. The fight in raid with the Jailer ends with Bolvar (who is no longer the Lich King and working with the rest of the group), Thrall, Jaina, and Baine bound and kneeling before him. Sylvanas is there and the Jailer proudly proclaims that now that he's got all the sigils, he will have everyone serve him. Sylvanas, stubbornly and now seeing the guy she's been working for isn't a good guy, says she will NEVER serve and launches an arrow at him. Zovall grabs the arrow and breaks it. Then he takes a crystal out and puts it into Sylvanas. It's her soul that was taken by Arthas all those eons ago. Arthas was dominated by the Jailer as well. She's now back to herself, no longer the banshee. Zovall leaves, taking Anduin through the portal. During all this, we've also found Uther the Lightbringer. He's in the Shadowlands. He knows the wounds Sylvanas had because Arthas had killed him too. He advocates for her even though everyone else wants to kill her. He works with her to see what she did and get her to acknowledge it. When she comes back out of the coma, she guides everyone to the place to face the Jailer for the last time. The final battle in the Sepulcher was against Anduin. As the fight ends, the Jailer forced Anduin to use Kingsmourne to stab the ground and shatter the world. He does, but he fights the final push. Varian's spirit comes and puts his hand on Anduin's left shoulder (like is in the trailer) and tells him that the sword was forged with justice. Then Saurfang (who weilded the sword at the Mok'gura with Sylvanas) puts his hand on Anduin's right shoulder and tells him that it was forged with honor. This is enough to get Anduin to pull the sword apart, which breaks the reforge and lets out the blue light. The runed armor evaporates and Anduin is freed. It's then that we find out that the energy that the Jailer had forged into Shalamayne held the last of Arthas's soul. That was the blue light. Once freed, Arthas's soul is freed and disintegrates into oblivion. There is no light in Shalamayne now. The new Arbitor gives Tyranda Whisperwind the right to sentence Sylvanas for her crime of burning the Night Elve's home tree. She sends Sylvanas into the Maw (Hell) to get all the souls of the Night Elves she condemned and she can't come out until every one of them is found and freed. Then Anduin asks to go into the Maw to see Sylvanas and they talk about how he feels unclean and unworthy to lead. She tells him he has free will and can call of the light, or not, as he wants. He bids her farewell and goes out to figure out himself. Aside: Anduin has PTSD. The moment I saw him go to the Archon, and the horror he felt, I knew he was going to react this way. My brother, a former Marine, has it and that cinematic has the thousand yard stare, the conflict, and the fear. I have been a fan of Anduin for years (since 2008) and I cried when I saw this trailer, it's so apparent how broken he is, how lost. I hope Thrall can help him come back to himself. I can't wait for the new expansion.
I really love this explanation and I now want to play wow again im sorry about your brother having ptsd as an army vet you both my respect and I love how you went through full breakdown on the backstory it makes this trailer all the more tragic and yet hopeful.
wow that is an awesome breakdown of this video I appreciate it i was a tad rusty on the lore and I wanted to do this video right so thank you for adding more context to this. Anduin suffered probably the most in this series.
She captures him and the jailor basicly breaks him down with his domination magic and controls him. makes him do those horrific thing but allowed him to know what his body is doing and feel the exhileration his body feels having the power course through him so he is disgusted with himself for his body's reaction. he also does not trust himself around the ones he love hince his isolation from loved ones
This is by far my favorite explanation I didn't even notice the sargeras's sword until the end of the trailer, that makes this trailer so much more impactful and the disgust you mentioned I felt that top notch cinematic trailer for sure!!!
That is Azorath, in battle for azeroth the world bleeds the gold blue color, though the red flames is new. some people think it is the sword influence.
the flinch when Thrall touches him is a definate sign of PTSD as is his lashing out
This is long but I hope it helps explain where we are in the trailer.

I have watched this a ton of times but this is the first one where i noticed the reflection in anduin's eyes is sargerus's sword

The best video-game trailer... ever.. imo
heck yes it is!!!!!
