Motorcycle Road Trips - Scottish Islands - Part Twenty

- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 20 ต.ค. 2024
- My motorcycle road trip adventure continues across the 4th island of my Scottish journey, as I make my way from Lickisto Blackhouse campsite and head back towards Tarbert, where I hear there's a fine coffee 'caravan'.
Later, I cross the imaginary border of the Isle of Harris and enter the Isle of Lewis, heading in a roundabout way to the town of Stornoway.

please please please, get back to aslan!! enough of scotland soooo boring
It’s great that you see it as a privilege to do what you are doing. It is also a privilege to be able to watch it. I have always wanted to go to Harris and Lewis but the reality is that I will never get there, so it is amazing that I am able to see it because of you. Thanks.
Thanks Kevin for taking us along on this stretch of this magnificent adventure. It is the second time that I've watched this episode as I was rather relaxed and tired when I first started to watch it last night so nodded off (sorry). More beautiful scenery and great twisty roads to keep the mind active and interested, lol. It's the so called 'man-flu'. Having said all that , I can't wait for the next one. Have a great week Kev. Take care and all the best. Stevie
Another wonderful trip and that landscape is breathtaking! Thank you again for the escape from the doldrums!
Today was the first time I was able to watch you on a Friday!
I started watching you on Amazon when I found out I had cancer. Monday of this week I was cleared by my oncologist. No cancer. Meaning I’m free!!! Like you’re free on your motorcycle but better. Please do something you love and have a tiny thought of me.
Thank you for all the experiences you’ve had over the years!!!!!!!
Oh my that's incredible news, I can't imagine the weight lifted when you received the confirmation. Very very well done to you. 🤗
Good on you and well done for getting rid of the cancer. The doctors helped but you are the reason for curing yourself.
Privileged? Yes maybe, but it’s your blood, sweat and tears that have made this happen. Love your energy. 🤗
Thank you for the nice ride, Kevin! Yes, agreed, Harris is very enjoyable, even on video.
Really enjoy this series so much. We don't want it to end. Thank you
I don't always watch these immediately after you have posted the next episode because, like fine wine, I want to savor every moment of my trip with you.
Hi, Kevin. I finally got back to the video this morning. Fabulous! Unbelievable scenery. I have to agree with you I think this is my favorite island as well. I’m looking forward to what you’re going to show us next, needless to say. Thanks for taking all the time to shoot these videos, edit these videos, and post them as well. You are a top-notch reporter of life!
I always enjoy reading your comments Lynette and it's heartwarming to know you're enjoying the road trip as well as the canal series. Even more incredible islands and scenery to come. 🙂
Hi Kevin ! Of course, another excellent episode. That does look like an amazing ride. Wish I could watch it in VR. Now that'd be an experience. 👍
After you said the coffee was full strength, I’m anticipating you being a little more chatty lol
Morning Kevin. Thanks again for the great video and the sunshine and smiles they always bring into our life. Wishing you a lovely weekend, floss and jan.
I find your pronunciations absolutely amusing, thanks for that 😃🤣
My favorite location so far. But I’m holding out for SHETLAND. Cannot wait.
Yes, Shetland is on another level.
I couldn't get out of my mind that soon we would be seeing a herd of woolly back mammoth's stretching miles upon miles of open land. Beautiful surrounding's all around you Kevin.
Stunning! Who wants to travel abroad when we have such wonderful places in the UK?
My sentiments exactly. 🙂
I have lived in France for over 50 years and funnily enough even though I'm English I wouldn't want to go anywhere else than France! I love it here.
I think my dear French wife may have influenced me somewhat! Anyway, Rule Britannia and God Bless England.
I can identify with your love of France, Martin. The places, the people, the attitude, the food. Visited several times and lived in Avignon for a month once. 🙂
@@CountryHouseGent Avignon is not what it used to be Kevin. It's also a very windy place as you know. Our city of Lyon is known to be the food capital and we love Lyon and the beautiful Beaujolais Hills but my wife is from Dijon originally before moving to London where we met. She couldn't speak English and my French was non existent then! A lot of fun.
FAITES VOUS PLAISIR A TOUS!
@@CountryHouseGent AND the ladies!!!
Ah, it comes up again--the fishing boat dream. You'll do it. I'm looking forward to "Travels by Fishing Boat." (And scenes cooking in the little "bothy" (?) cottage on the cliffside.
Wonderful Kevin, I am a walker and have enjoyed walking these hills and valleys.
Take care.
Dave & Elaine.
I would like to try that as well one day. Some of those valleys look incredible.
Great series of motorcycle videos Kevin. Your narrow boat ones were good but the change to biking are excellent. Cheers from New Zealand.
So glad you enjoyed the Isle of Harris my home land. You also stayed at the camp site where my uncle once lived. Mr Parr’s coffee is the finest in the islands I’m my humble opinion. I am so happy you took in not only the stunning beaches of the west side of Harris but also the rugged moon like geology of the East side of Harris or as we call it the Bays of Harris. 👍
A pleasure Alasdair and I'm delighted you enjoyed this part of the journey. Harris was a complete surprise and contrast compared to the previous islands on this trip, Lickisto Blackhouse camping and the rugged twisty roads and scenery being particular highlights. Your black and white pudding aren't bad either. 🙂
That bike is smooth brother! I know you love it, ‘cause I do! Heaven! Envious of this trip!
At least the sheep don't blend into the countryside like deer do...and they may (jokingly) offer a bit of cushioning if things go south. Beautiful footage Kevin, thanks.
Watched a few hours ago. TH-cam has been really good at putting your videos in my feed. Was such a relaxing time I fell off and took a very good nap. Came back, finished watching again.
You are a lucky man Kevin. I am glad that you are able to enjoy life such as this. Great video as always!
Great video as usual viewed from faraway in Australia. I love these on yer bike and on the canals. Aussies do make a good coffee. Just bought a few coffees for you enjoy.
Real nice leg of the journey.
Nice video Kevin, I’m one of the few who met you on your journey and couldn’t believe it when I did. There’s no V in the Gaelic language so the bh in words is usually a V sound, dh has different sounds depending where it is in relation to other letters, at the end it’s usually silent 👍
Cheers for that and yes, it was a surprise for me meeting viewers and fans as well. 🙂
great vlog - loving your adventures as we loved our cycling holiday up on Lewis and Harris and reminisced riding on the roads and the incredible landscape - the sneak of next weeks vlog we recognised the campsite we stayed at in a pod thanks for sharing your travels
Thankyou again that was great. Take care
Harris; all your accolades, by a Country mile, and the Tweed to Dye for.
Hey! Hey! Hey! It's Friday! Beautiful mountains. I do love the saying "Not all who wonder are lost" I say go wonder into those valleys. 🙂I can only imagine what a clear night sky would look like removed from artificial city lights. Stay safe out there! -Cheers from Seattle!
You're right Ann, there's zero light pollution on Harris out in the sticks. In fact the brightest things at night are the moon and stars.
that road at the beginning was awesome.
Hi Kevin, am enjoying your video's mate
Take care ❤ X X X
Many thanks Susan
Re shopping. I once took a ferry from Oban to Islay which stops at Colonsay. One car was full of groceries, cleaning peoducts, loo rolls etc I spoke to the driver and she said it was her three monthly visit to Aldi to stock up on essentials for herself and a couple of other families. Life really is different once you decide to live remotely.
There is currently a discussion on Lewis as to whether Tesco should open on Sunday, as shops are still generally closed.
I was reading about that on the Beeb. Surely there's enough room on the island to allow shopping AND church on a Sunday?
very interesting country this time, Kevin, the topography reminds one of the high plains in the US, vivid golds and browns
Episode 20? Cor lummie! Always great to see a new instalment Kevin! Friday night viewing sorted again!❤️
Hi Kevin, Enjoyed the ride. I loved the glimpse of a loch and then rounding a corner seeing it in all its glory. Lovely scenery and great mountains. Good you got the all important coffee, even though it wasn’t decaf. ☕️ Did I see a Tesco van early on in the video? I love your day-dreaming about your fishing boat and taking up walking. Perhaps some Munro bagging too? Looking forward to seeing Stornaway next week. 😀
I didn't notice a Tesco van but they do deliver that far out, just it cost an arm and a leg. Yep, the fishing boat. One day, one day. 🙂
What a perfect road for u and my scenery to die for hope you are ok has you seem tc now Kevin the oldies 🤗👍
Kevin that was my fastest half hour of video this week, thanks for the ride, Charlie from Pennsylvania 😊
Wow!
Yes, this would be good ASMR.
I do so envy the ability to just pick up and go on adventure. Don't know if I'll ever get the opportunity which makes your videos even more relevant and enjoyable to me.
Harris seems like the perfect playground for a motorbike & the ultimate escape to get away from it all & be anonymous for a while.✌🏻 Great roads with gorgeous scenery, views for miles, & the freedom to just get lost in the ride without so much as a care in the world-next-level cool!😎
Very true Mark. There was a very real feeling of being a long long way from any significant settlements or towns and facilities.
I would love to see you doing a bike tour of the great American West!
Nice ❤️
I miss your cooking episodes like the ones you did on Aslan.
Never mind the coffee shop...find the fish and chip shop.....it's excellent
Wow that caffeinated beverage really shows! High energy Kevin is good to see👍
Ha yes Steve. It's was like an injection of pure caffeine. 😆
I have been so busy that I haven't seen the last few episodes. I miss my CHG, see you soon I hope! Thank you for the updates on your continuing epic journey. ✌️
Cheers. Hope you enjoy catching up.
What a nice surprise! I thought today was Thursday! All day. Have had some sleepless nights!
I know the feeling Marion. Sometimes I panick I haven't put the episode up. Then I realise it's only Thursday.
@@CountryHouseGent 😅nightmare stuff.
Been many years since I've been to Lewis & Harris but lovely to see it again and before I forget it's Ull (as in seagull)apool. Loving watching your vlogs Kevin!
A pleasure Ann. Great to hear the videos are bringing back some fabulous memories.
Another interesting video. I'd love to replicate your island hopping journey ... minus the camping! I always wonder however when cafes became coffee shops?
Those houses all look somewhat the same. I feel like I am riding along.
I think you changed one of the camera placements. I like it a great deal. Beautiful road and countryside. 😂
I appreciated the "the Who" reference, which spurred me to think of this drive in terms of Quadrophenia, which then made me surmise that CHG is much more a Rocker than a Mod.
All of the roads over there are so good, how?? Take your life in your hands on our roads over here, the potholes are insane😂
When I was at school, many years ago, our geography teacher asked us what Harris was known for. Obviously, he was after tweed. However, one wag in the class decided to embarrass one of our class-mates and said, "FARTING!". The teacher burst out laughing for a few minutes.
You started on the island of Harris and … without crossing any land bridge … end up in Lewis? I have learned something about these fabulous places. One island but we give it two names! Very peaceful in its untouched wildness.
❤
great vid on
Great channel Kevin. Loved watching your journeys through Scotland. Will you be doing more journeys on Aslan?
Cheers Michael. Yes there'll be more canal travel.
Have you ever considered taking yourself and your bike to the U.S. and riding around a bit? I think you’d enjoy it! 😊
Indeed I would love to explore the US by bike, though I think for the sake of practicality, it would be simpler to hire over there.
If only "Carlsberg" did Scenery Kevin? we would buy a Keg!
you remind me of the Robert Persig book, Zen and the art of motorcycle maintenance. A good read if you haven't read it before.
Thank you. 🙂 Yes I did read it many years ago. I mainly remember it was about a father bonding with his son via motorcycling.
Is the Criterion bar still there? My lasting memory is a summer's day early 90s of a very refreshed blond lad falling through the saloon type doors into the street mid-afternoon. He got up with a huge grin and promptly well back down again. :)
At 16:56, a small stone hut? So few things standing out on the landscape and then this.
Trees:)
Thanks Kevin
Hi Kevin. Hey, why can't you move there? Why wait until next lifetime? But I understand. Life is complicated. Thank you for sharing your journey. ❤
Perhaps you need to apologise for apologising, Kevin 😉 ...it's fine ...I've noticed a growing movements against foreigners attempting to pronounce names correctly, because most get it terribly wrong, which sound more offensive than them saying it using the vocalisations from their language.
I'm glad that the ASMR has done well, I did wonder.
It's heartwarming that so many people recognise you in canal world, and frustrating, too, I guess. Walking does provides a nice form of anonymity and in remote areas, that feeling of being the only person on the planet.
Hello Kevin ! I miss seeing you on you boat Aslan. I was wondering if you will you run across Colin and Shaun of Foxes Afloat on you travels around Scotland?
Colin & Shaun are on the mainland and I won't be going in that direction.
Friday evening with CHG is getting to be a habit. Thanks for all the hard work showing us the islands, which I will probably never visit but I have a flavour of them now.
A couple of questions come to mind.
Where do they get electricity/gas from?
Is it supplied to the more remote dwellings?
Also water and sewerage services?
Bye for now,see you next week.
There's electricity pylons all over - as far as I know every house has or could have mains electric. From my own experience mains gas won't be available, so would be bottled. Sewage tends to be either septic tanks, or home treatment systems/reed beds.
@@CountryHouseGent Thanks for that,I did wonder if electricity is generated on the islands or maybe brought by under sea cables?
@timeast6412 I'm not so sure about Harris but Orkney and Shetland are currently constructing enormous wind farms.
Im glad you are having such a good ride. I have a question. Was it hard to go back to Aslan and all that it entails? You seem so much more alive out on the bike. Thanks for this trip. Safe travels. 😊
It was an odd feeling being back on the water, but after an hour it was like being back home again (which I was).
I have so many questions about these Scottish Islands you habe been taking us around. The land is barren and all one sees is beautiful scenery and sheep. Then pops up a well appointed house or cottage in the middle of what appears to be nowhere. How do these folks exist? Next, the roads ate maintained from mostly okay to extremely flat and well paved. How and who? The weather there has to be horrific. Getting basic living needs seems next to impossible with only a motor vehicle. Can't even imagine an emergency. The island folks have to be strong and self sustaining. I could not do it. The planning the day to day would wear me out. I admit to being an over indulged
Yes life out there has to be planned in more detail than it does in a town or city. The infrastructure is top notch because the Scottish government believes in providing a good service to those who pay for it, unlike the English government for example. 🙄
I'd have loved to see that running 🐑 overtake you on that old water pump engined banger you ride mate!!🙊
That road kind of reminds me of driving through Flagstaff and Williams, Arizona and that area. What a great island.
Also, what is that Lewis pudding you were talking about?
It's Black Pudding. More details coming soon when I fry some up. 🙂
Coffee, apparently the darker the roast the more caffeine has been removed from it. May increase choice if the -bland- caffeine free isn't available.
Try Swiss Water decaf. Indistinguishable from full strength - and doesn't stop you enjoying a fabulous night's sleep. 🙂
Love the walkabouts, but don’t need the locals examined to any extent. Unless it’s part of the experience.
Kev, check out the band, "Widespread Panic" from Athens, Georgia USA. I think you'll like.
The UK would be so much nicer if it didn’t ape the USA. Scotland generally doesn’t bother and it is a joy to experience. I am very much enjoying your journey travelling where, unfortunately, I have missed in my own life. It’s very grand, the scenery, isn’t it?
Kev can you tell me the location when Aslan tipped sideways in a lock. Same has happened to Alan Lazy Daze on latest vid. Regards from Chester.
Sure, it was Shipton Weir Lock on the Oxford Canal, about 4 or 5 miles north of Thrupp.
@@CountryHouseGent Thanks Kev found it this afternoon, 9 months ago. Passed the information to Alan. Nice of you to reply. Regards from Chester.
I’ve got to stop watching right as you said black pudding because I’m on my morning break at work. I’ll be back, said as Arnold!
30, 40, 45 miles... to work.....everyday....5 days/week....and then home again....daily. USA. 😂😂
Wondering if the BMW rides as smooth as it sounds…might imagine the long rides make one’s hands and wrists buzz after a while. Mesmerizing from my armchair view.
The BMW is very smooth. I've never had numb tingling hands no matter how many miles.
😊carlabhagh according to google translate is caravans
Hey Just wondering what camera you are using to record this video? thanks.
The helmet cam and microphone are a Sena 50C. Other onboard footage from a GoPro Hero 7. All video off the bike is with a Redmi Note 10 Pro smartphone and DJI wireless mic.
Hey Kevin, is that you on guitar in your opening music? 😮
It's not not, sorry
Kevin, the bike sounds good. Do you have a start/finish estimate of total miles you will have ridden?
I'm anticipating approximately 1,100 miles.
You battle with the Gaelic spellings (as I would too), but my map has all the names in English as well - no need to battle with that. E.g. Carlabhagh in English is Carloway, what's wrong with that? I'm sure the locals have twigged that you're not a Gaelic speaker. If you ask the way to Stornoway, you'll end up in Steornabhagh, there you are, Bob's yer uncle.
Ay, call me a duff old traditionalist but I like to at least attempt to engage with various old traditions and customs of places I visit, even if I'm utterly useless at it. 🙂
Did u no.in Cornwall they have hog's pudding Cornwall answer to black pudding its white.
Didn't know it was called that, though I buy some white pudding from Stornoway.
Please please please bring aslan back
I’ve watched your channel for many years Kevin but twenty episodes of you riding your bike through Scotland is becoming a little tiresome. Lovely views I accept, I live in Scotland and of travelled many of those roads by motorcycle myself . I don’t know how many episodes there is still to go but it would be nice if you could condense it to the more interesting aspects of your journey.
Amen amen amen! There’s no need for the episodes to be so short and to be so many. This location is my favorite so far, just gorgeous, but all we saw was a ride on the road. No ‘town’ stop, no camping, no ferry, no stops to just take in the views even for a minute or two. We didn’t even get to see the coffee!
