Porsche 996 911 Carrera 2 | Water-cooled revolution | Future Classics with Becky Evans S2 E2

  • The Porsche 996 didn’t have the best starts in life with a lot of the 911 community rejecting the changes. Water-cooling and those fried egg headlights were just too much change for the loyal Porsche fans. However, enough time has passed where it is finally being appreciated for being a properly fun performance car.
This means it is firmly placed in the future classics category and we’ll let Becky Evans tell you why.
Have you grown to appreciate the 996?

The 3.4 cable throttle, twin gear IMS shaft, is the absolute best 996 to buy. Get one with the M030 pack with an lsd, Dansk exhaust, IPD Plenum and throttle body and remap, you have a weapon. No electronic nannies, narrow body, and a true delight to drive. That was my last car previous to the 996 Turbo I have, the Carrera 2 was arguably the more playful and better drive.

I have a 2000 Millennium Edition that recently cleared 195k miles. These things are awesome cars! Mine gets tracked, driven in snow, road tripped in, and generally daily driven. It's not been without faults though. Replaced the transmission when the 2nd gear synchro went out at 177k miles and the engine did indeed blow up on track at 191k. But even with the cost of those expensive replacement items (things that any high mileage car will eventually need) I am still under the cost of what a 997 costs at today's prices and they really aren't noticeably slower than one either.

I dont think anyone questions how they drive. They are fantastic in handling. They are a clear improvement in handling from 993 which was a huge step itself in handling. The 996 you can trail brake without any worries.
Between 3.4 and 3.6. The early 3.4 were with double row IMSB which has as low failing rate as plain bearings in the earlier engines (According to Eisen Class Act documents - based on over 50 000 US imported 996 and Boxsters). Also when they went for the increased torque (read heat load) at low and mid range in the 3.6 they pretty much created the problem of bore scoring at the 5th and 6th cylinders because the water flow balance holes needed to be opened - thus compromising the last cyls in the water loop.
Anyway, 3.4 or 3.6, you need to love it. Take care of the engine, preventive maintenance recommended. But reading the internet stories what you forget easily is that these cars have fantastic chassis and suspension. The Carrera suspension are by geometey still basically same in the latest Carreras as they were in 996 - apart from the optional 4ws and GT3’s double wishbone front suspension (which still hast the same roll center height and initial camber gain but has a lot less sensitive RC height vs. ride height. And the wishbone systems has a less friction than the sticking MacPherson.)

Took delivery of my 996 Carrera 2 in 1998. Just coming up to 25 years ownership and can't praise it enough. In 2001, I had sport suspension added and sport cats ( which added 20bhp ) and a Gemballa exhaust plus the car was lowered which is not an issue due the hard suspension. It has now coming up to 98,000 miles but still looks great and I kept the amber indicators etc. I could not understand why people changed them as it made the car look slightly bland.

I think the car is stunning, including the headlights. I wish people would push aside their prejudices and just look at it with neutral eyes. Great Video Becky. Having owned a 85 930, 71 2.2T, 74 MFI Carrera and a stack of other sports cars over the years, I can honestly say my 10/97 built 3.4 Manual, Throttle cable RWD Carrera (pre Traction control) is a REAL JOY, and by far exceeds the ownership and driving experiences of any of the others I've owned. It feels massively capable; it's fast, nimble, with exceptional braking, steering, and throttle response and in Arctic Silver with the original orange lights (i.e the lights they used at LeMans) is really starting to turn heads these days. The 996 is the lightest ever water cooled car, and the lightest ever 911 with 300 NA H/P. I just love it.... Drive one (like you stole it) and proves yourself wrong!

I bought it, I loved the c2 over four wheel drive more alive and agile and loved the classic look of the 996 over the 997 which felt old fashioned in side as the tech had dated my 996 has no tech to age central locking and heated rear window only buttons to play with maybe in hindsight the c4s would have been a better purchase but it’s not all about money

Just to say there’s an independent Porsche company in Hertfordshire called ‘Friends Green Porsche’ who do the IMS for about £1,000.00 🤔
So if l was buying one of these just build in costs for that and go see their online cars for sale and repairs and servicing prices.
I’m not recommending them just saying if you want a water cooled 911 look there first at what you’re in for money wise when these go wrong 🤔 Also you’ll also find the front radiators tend to rot with trapped leaves, so there’s an aftermarket grill u can fit to stop that from happening

I'm biased, I just bought one. They're the best looking of all the 911's, the shape of them is very clean, looks best in narrowbody format - rear wiper delete, no parking sensors, no aero. Lightweight, 300bhp's plenty for the road, 6-speed manual and non-electronic steering for the most analogue pleasure. The traction control can be turned off, the futures electric and won't sound like this flat-six does once you get it over 3.5k revs, enjoy it whilst you can.

Really wanted a 996 but like many got so focussed on the C4S wide body. It’s spiralling cost prevented me from buying one and I didn’t want a “consolation” C2. I ended up with a 987.1 CS. But the more I look at the early 996.1 C2 the more I’m like, yeah I see it now. Some subtle mods (suspension, maybe wheels, and a exhaust) and you’ve got a handsome, slender, classic.
Worth changing a fully sorted, factory loaded 987.1 Cayman S for? Hmm that’s my dilemma!

I own a 1999 911 coupe in manual. I suppose if you grade it on it's driving merits over previous models it excels but what it lacks in character over the previous air cooled 911's can't be written on paper. Regarding which gen to go with it depends on what you are looking for. The 1999 was the last year for old school throttle by physical cable and the more robust dual row IMS which was less problematic. My problem is I am 57 now and back in 2016 I was looking for an air cooled 911 but this 99 came up for such a low price due to the height of the IMS, RMS scare I couldn't resist. The owner originally wanted $15k USD but after a week of back and fourth I got it for $11k. I was struggling with air cooled prices back then which a clean 1980 SC 911 was going for 35k but now that same car is near 50k so I screwed myself by settling. With 103k My car is probably worth somewhere aroung 20k I suppose in todays market up nine from what I paid but nothing like the 1980 SC had I had stuck to my guns.

Real talk time: The first gen 996 headdlights are: a. actually cool, especially in clear, and b. far superior to the 'fixed' version of the 996.2.

I wouldnt say so, no, since they were original hardware for euro models (since euros didnt have the DOT requirement that the light remain orange, even when not in the process of blinking, but they changed to all clear at some point during the run, I believ the boxster stuck with the orange blinker for its run, both cars are swappable. .For me the clears look the business, and really puts a bow on the headlight sitch - which Ive done a complete 180 on, first hating them and growing 'ok with them' to now loving em. I think the 1st generation 996 headlights are the best of the bunch and, I now love them and seek them out, I wouldnt want a car with the 'refresh' personally. Time is a funny thing. lol @@Rainyfeels

She said if you're stuck on the headlights go for gen 2. NOOOOOOO!!!!! Bad advice. The Gen 1 headlights are prettier, and in fact awesome, Gen 2 are ugly! But, ok, if you want a single row IMSB that will blow up your engine, go for gen 2. If you want bore scoring go for Gen 2. If you want useless option sheet add ons go for Gen 2. If you want a pure 911 go for Gen 1.

Please have a pro inspect the engine with a fine toothed comb before purchase. M96 engine is hit or miss. Plenty of horror stories online. You may get lucky or unlucky. Prices are low for a reason and it isn't for its looks.

its all relative. Average 996 Carrera cost is £15k and 0-60mph in just under 5 seconds.

I do not like them..... too slim on the body...ugly headlamps...built cheap...bad engines that have bore scoring and IMS issues..... all 911 owners poo hoo the 944....how many do you see with engine issues??? yep hardly any!! go buy a 944 TURBO ...way better car. For me sad that it took until the 991.1 for Porsche to make a truely modern car! PS have owned x13 Porsches inc 996, 997...
