I'm glad to see it's enjoyed around the world, no matter the country or color, if somethings good and healthy, it's good and healthy and I really do wish this beautiful flower gets more spotlight
Nice to see Devon. He is an amazing chef and knows how to make any type of natural drink. Kind man. Say hi to Mokko and his clan. Happy holidays to all. Stay safe.
It was many years ago i discovered your channel. It gives me nostalgia watching your earliest videos. So good to see fresh videos here. I'm not saying that you havent been here all the time but i recently found back to this channel and i still love it. I found out about Jamaican Sorrel a few weeks ago, tried it (ofc only with dried flowers here in germany) and it was awesome. Coincidentally you just put up a video about it. Cheers from Overseas!
There's also white sorrell. Some yrs ago i read an article that student scientists from UWI did an experiment using white sorrel to treat liver cancer.
Happy holidays & merry vibrations Ras Kitchen, bless up! Thank you for keeping it real sharing the culture and love of Jamaica, can’t wait till God blesses me with a chance to go and visit. One love!
Sorrel is a traditional drink during Christmas time in all of the Caribbean not just Jamaica. Black fruit cake is a traditional cake during Christmas time not only in Jamaica but in all of the Caribbean.
It looks so tasty, I got another fruit to add to my shopping list. Hopefully I can find some. Thanks for posting Merry Christmas and Happy holidays to all.
Mmmm mm that Sorrell drink looked sooo good Made it ma self but like you Matthew only the dried type, will definitely add Alspice to mine this Yr.!! Sending Christmas greetings to all in da yard an to our new master chef Devon Blessings an raspek 🙏 Keep the videos coming Matthew 👊🇯🇲🇬🇧
FYI. Like many popular plants grown in the Caribbean region, sorrel has its origins in West Africa. Known as Roselle, or less by its scientific name 'Hibiscus sabdariffa', sorrel is a species of the Hibiscus family. It bears annually, maturing in about six months and growing to about 7-8 ft.
As a Mexican living in the Mexican Caribbean (cancun) I've met a lot of jamaicans and when I recommend them agua de jamaica, they don't know what it is until they try and they'll say it taste like sorrel. So yes. I've come to conclusion that "agua de jamaica" is named after this Jamaican drink only without the pepper and ginger. (Hibiscus only).
He has this very cool personality. I love how he made the sorrel, that's how I make mine but I add some cinnamon leaves at times. Every Jamaican home has this drink during the Christmas season.
So lovely to watch you making up a fresh batch of sorrel. I’m making my own right now for my friend’s and family right. One love Devon. I hope you’ll be around in February because I’m coming back to my favourite place in St Thomas. Merry Christmas and happy new year!
I like your recipe for sorrel....it is very simple to make. I add cinnamon sticks to mine, unfortunately fresh sorrel is not always available so I use dried sorrel,
I'm sorry you misunderstood me I take sorrel also kno as hibiscus. And add pimento, ginger, orange peel and cinnamon. When I said I make sorrel with pimento I ment as an ingredient to flavor the sorrel. Merry Christmas
Great episode Matt! Our holiday customs in Jamaica must be really interesting to you. Keep showing all the beauty of Jamaica. Bless up! Happy Holidays!!
Merry Christmas Matthew! That WAS a special video. Man I'm tingling 😂 Boiled water too! That's a treat. I always found that when I cooled boiling water, with no sediment, it was in a new league on it's own. I'd call it a treat. I'm going to boil some water right now and cool it. Pass the spliff Matthew 😂 I got THE BEST water! But actually I think the real best water would have minerals or vitamins in it but still. It's detectable and clearly next level. You feel cleaner for sure.
Sorrel is very popular throughout tue Caribbean. I was surprised to hear Mexican friends call it "flor de Jamaica". Don't even know Jamaicans who call it that.
I make Sorrell. I pound my all spice seeds a little to open it up. I soak my sorrell in refrigerator for quite some time. I boil my water and add Sorrell and spices. It delicious. I don't boil the Sorrell. I add to hot water.I add Anise spice sometimes. Oranges sliced I add them to sometimees cinnamon. Limes are good but if you over do it it makes it tart.
I like sorrel drink but not with pimento (allspice) or cloves, just some red label wine added to it! The lack of pipe water for days is something that I could never get used to again. I remember it happening quite frequently as a child and it was such an inconvenience. Rasta Devon is so chill he just takes everything in stride- good vibes!
Bless everyone who grows this plant in their yard. You will see people tell you to let the pods dry on the plant for seeds and I think that is a good Idea but here is another one to go with you through the season. When you harvest your calyxys save your green seed pods and just set them somewhere dry and cool for like 1-2 months and they will naturally dry and crack open and low and behold your seeds aren't white anymore but brown and good to plant.
I was born and raised in the UK, but have a Jamaican father, we grew up drinking Sorrel all year round, not just at Christmas time. I now live in Mexico where flor de Jamaica is just as popular, but here they use the petals, whereas Jamaica use the buds, as good as it tastes here in Mexico, the Jamaican version tastes even better. 🇯🇲🇲🇽
I'm glad to see it's enjoyed around the world, no matter the country or color, if somethings good and healthy, it's good and healthy and I really do wish this beautiful flower gets more spotlight

Obviously two different places two different names. Like most countries eat the samething but have different names for it.
