the silver lifestyle unit is nothing more than a preamp. if you run the variable outlet speaker leads to an amplifier you can use the unit without the bose speaker set up. i used a non integrated amp ( no volume control knob) and the volume control on the lifestyle adjusted the volume.
There is no button on the sub. I struggled to figure out how to get mine to work also. Turned out you just have to have it plugged into the correct port on the back of the main Bose system.

Can you show how/where the subs is connected to the receiver?
Did the sub have its own on off button or just plug in and it's on? Can't get mine to work but also has no on off button
