I don't understand how we keep putting Neris out there. Counsell hasn't been managing the team the way I hoped when we signed him.

Two, three months ago we had no other options. Brown, Almonte, Palencia and Alzolay all went down with injuries.
We have options now. I think Lopez deserves a shot at the ninth inning.
Counsell was brought here to do two things better than his predecessor-run the bullpen and come up big in September. He's very close to having the bullpen figured out. Just needs to get consistency in the ninth inning.
Sox had Neris on the ropes last weekend as well. I think he's tipping his splitter. I'd like to see Hotovy pull him aside if he hasn't already.

Third inning reminds me of the afternoon in milwaukee when Steele had to launch into his expetive laced tirade.

That first "error" by Swanson (:48 to 1:07) was not officially an error, because they did get the out at second and a DP cannot be assumed. But that was the sloppiest defensive inning I've seen in a long time, by two players (Hendricks and Swanson) who are known for their usually-solid defense.

DFA Neris. He is not worth the pain he’s giving us

funny how after setup man pointed out that Neris often balks, he gets called for balk. but to the Cubs' credit, as you point out, they did try and work with him in the interval between the sox series and this one.

Coomer wondered why the ump waited for a pivotal situation to call a balk. He said Neris had been doing the same thing all inning.

@@everetttauscher8377 that’s the issue with Neris this year. He’s doing it more often, so he’s more likely to get called for it.
Career high 3 balks this year.

Let me see if I can say this more clearly. Hector....Neris...is...not....a.....CLOSER! Adbert....Alzolay.....is....not.....a....CLOSER! If you want to blame anyone for the nearly 25 late inning collapses this team has suffered this season, look no furthur than that idiot named Jed Hoyer. It's like giving a 10 year old a hundred dollars to do grocery shopping for the family. Don't get upset when he/she brings back all the wrong shit. The Cubs aren't cheap. Hoyer has just spent the money like a complete moron. He's got a 230 million dollar roster full of mediocre players and NO STARS! He spends 8 million a year on a manager, but doesn't spend a dime on a closer or a legitimate power hitter. If Neris doesn't save another game I'm not going to blame him because he's set up fail. The guy is a 7th or 8th inning pitcher at best.

I have little confidence in Neris, either, and he was getting hit hard, but only one person in the ballpark thought that was a balk -- the third base umpire. The batter didn't appear to think so, and neither did anyone else in Toronto's dugout -- no one made even the slightest move to complain. The home plate umpire said nothing.
And Counsell's reasonable complaint appeared to be: "He did nothing different on that pitch than he did on every previous pitch from the stretch. But you wait until the bases are loaded and he delivers the third strike to decide he's not coming set? What kind of weirdly timed intervention is that?"

Deshaies points out on air that when Neris is in the game with runners on that someone has to remind him to come set. 10th year in MLB and the guy is balking in these situations? Hopefully someone reminds Counsell not to use him 60 times this season.

Lucky with this one, cant afford to let Neris close if we're gonna try and get back in this wild card hunt. Leave him in pen. Great show

Cubs continue to prove my point. If you NEED runs, why take close pitches. Why take strike 1, then take strike 3? Swanson has left 4 on by taking strike 3. Busch takes strike 1 on the first pitch, takes the 2nd pitch down the middle. Ground out. Suzuki takes strike 1, strike 2, swings at a ball for a strike out. Happ takes strike 1, strike 2, lazy fly ball to LF. You can't win if you can't score and you can't score with the bat on your shoulder crying to the Ump that the pitch was an inch too high. Swanson has been seen crying twice, striking out looking. The first time the pitch was a change up, inside by 1/16th of an inch, the bases are loaded. Just hit a bullet down the line and score 3. Or? Stand there like an idiot. Runner on 2nd, one out. Strike 3 right down the middle. He cries some more. Jeesus
