The crayfish arc this episode was stellar: introduction to our hero, epic show of strength and fortitude, only to flip over bascially unprovoked and then crawl away in shame. Brilliant
I lived in Lawrence for 7 years in the 90s. It was such a trip to see you walking down Mass Street past some of my favorite spots (including the coffee shop). I love that town. Thanks!
Knowing very little about you guys, and only through these videos, I must say that watching Misery on Valentine's Day seems like a very MasoTaters thing.
I just found your channel on Saturday and have watched many (lost count lol) of your videos from this Delaware to San Francisco trek) i am - as a fellow, much smaller scale walker- hooked!!! I also happen to live in southeast Kansas so am VERY pleased Ottawa was so warm and hospitable to you both!!! Now I am off to watch more of your videos! Thank you for the great content!
Hey Y'all. I'm glad you met good Kansas folks, and I'd expect many to be amazed about your trek. Watch out for the crayfish and walk on to the setting sun!
@@FirstChurchofTheMasochistHikes I'm on the mural you took shelter by in Lawrence KS! You walked half a block from my house and got coffee at my favorite downtown coffee shop. Sorry the weather was oogy for you though.
Matt: Just tell them this is training for your Eurasia trip. Tators: "My students can calculate which of these cars are speeding." On a freeway thru farmland, they're all speeding. :)
I was curious about the name of the Marais des Cygnes River which flows through Ottawa. It means swamp of the swans, which is just an awesome name. Future Masotaters through paddle option!!
Happy to hear you two had a good experience through Lawrence, the bike path you took from downtown all the way into the Baker Wetlands, I used to ride most of that every day for work (favorite part of my old job). Continue to have a safe trip out there and feel free to visit Lawrence again!! While I'm not familiar with this massive thru-hike you're doing, if you end in up in Colorado, will you be sticking to the roads or backpacking over the mountains?
My company had a get together at an axe throwing place. I was terrible for the first half hour or so then started getting bulls eyes because I kept trying.
On the plus side at least I can point to the less than marketable channel name as why I am not famous on the Internet. Otherwise, I’d be left with just my personality… :)
Have you heard of "The New American Perimeter Trail Will Be the Longest Hiking Route in the U.S. The 12,000-mile loop-which encompasses parts of the Pacific Crest Trail and the Appalachian Trail-is currently being scouted and mapped."
Yeah, Rue McKendrick’s thing. Cool enough idea but there’s enough overlap It’s probably not something I would ever look at seriously. Also, due to the weather / season issues, it would be a multi year thing.
@@FirstChurchofTheMasochistHikes Having built buildings in around 45 different cities in about 20 different states I will definitely agree that nice people are everywhere. But also having dealt with that many different different city agencies and fire departments , very few will go much further than the minimum requirements of their jobs. At least that was my experience. Plus, I live less than 2 blocks from city hall, on the same block as a fire station and can barely get the time of day from either. Therefore, kudos to Ottawa. Edit: Kansas is a cooler state than it gets credit for. I hope you both enjoy it.
Max kudos to the Ottawa Fire Department! Sure, some of it was probably curiosity (who wouldn't wonder about what type of people would DO this to themselves?) but also some was just Kansas nice. Way to go guys! And if the fire department does not have a mascot yet, may I suggest "The Fighting Crayfish"? One tough little fella, willing to take on the world! Looking good guys. Hike on! Tortoise (NOT a crayfish)
Calculating speed based on doppler shift is a cool idea! How do you measure the frequency differential? That seems difficult to accurately pull from the video.
Yeah that would be the tricky part. There are oscilloscope apps that show you the waveform and try to pick out individual frequencies, so I just need to test and see if the dominant frequency is clear enough to pick out from those.
Not that we noticed, but we have been pretty exhausted. We were also hidden behind the building so they would’ve had to get out of the car and walk back there.
I used to listen to this guy on the radio called Dr. science. He had a theme song about how he had a masters degree…in science. I need that for hiking.
Why would people think you need to practice hiking along a dangerous road when you could practice on trail and actually be hiking? I am baffled everytime you say that. Lol.
Personally, I live in the city and the closest trail for me to practice hike is about 20 miles away. I do practice hike in the city on the concrete and pavement. Not what I'd like to do, but it is what it is.
I seriously wish Taters had been my high school science teacher. :-)

🤣that little clawed ninja was to funny. 😎✌
OMG the image of a covered wagon saying "Get in Loser, your about to die of dysentery" just killed me!
Said Tater: I am not a trail floozie. I am your girl friend. Paraphrased from the Princess Bride. Fun town, excellent episode.
Crayfish: " come closer, i dare ya. Put up your dukes, put up your dukes!"

It was a really cool town. We got a good impression. Also a really good coffee shop.
The fighting crawdad!!!

A real wholesome welcome in. that stretch of America....hurray !
Thanks, another great day. ✌🏻😘
Day 103 watch. Great campsite. Nice folks to let you stay there.
I live in Lawrence! Walk on that section of the loop almost every day. Safe travels!
Nice town! Really liked that coffee shop

Awesome Firehouse Folks!! What a cool spot!!
Best of success in your hike across the USA!

Love to see some blue blazing at last! Do it!
How did they get your picture on the axe throwing window so quickly?
I was about to type the same thing.
I grew up in Ottawa, get the hell out of there as fast as you can.
That was a rare Village People crawdad. He was doing YMCA!
Wow, how nice! Ottawa, KS, the nicest town (or at least fire department) in America!

It’s a combination of roads and trail. I’ll be overlapping with the Continental Divide Trail for a bit for example which is a trail I did previously
It’s funny how the highlight of hiking often is not the views you get, it’s the people you meet
10k. Congratulations Matt
The love garden is an amazing record store.

The fire department probably wants to know when you arrive, so they can turn on the hidden camera in the shower.
🤣
Trail Lizard-More costly and more accommodating than the standard lot lizard.
Holy moly! Why isn't my city as nice as Ottawa?
They quite well might be. I have met really nice people in pretty much every place I’ve hiked. And at this point I have hiked a fair number of places.

It would be so bad, but so good, if the next time Matt has to leave trail was because of Dysentery.
Did local PD ever come out to check on you guys?
Not that we noticed, but we have been pretty exhausted. We were also hidden behind the building so they would’ve had to get out of the car and walk back there.
@@FirstChurchofTheMasochistHikes I’m glad the VFD hooked you up. Shower was double bonus!
It was way more than we expected, and I really appreciated it
Should start feeling like more uphill, at least till continental divide, then all down hill, right…. lol.
Those are not water lilies but native American Lotus
👍💪👀
Jarts in the 70s

Axes in the 2020s
At this point you are practicing hiking like an attorney practices law or a physician practices medicine
You should get a hiking license, ya know?

If Taters likes turtles come to northeast South Dakota. We have hundreds of lakes and most have turtles🐢
Cool :) it’s a state we haven’t been to yet so it will be in the future plans at some point!
