      No truer words were EVER spoken. Mike Portnoy introduced me to Porcupine Tree in 2004 because of this album. I was HOOK line & sinker after and was so disappointed when they disbanded in late 2009

    Once you discover Porcupine Tree you suddenly realise how boring a lot of other bands actually are. The rabbit hole is deep, prepare to get lost.

      That can be said about prog in general. For me, it was Opeth, which eventually led me to PT. Prog makes anything in 4/4 time sound stale.

    Steven Wilson , is also a producer ( Opeth , Anathema) and audio engineer in high demand having remastered dozens of classic prog albums by Yes , King Crimson, Jethro Till , as well as Tears For Fears....his solo work is excellent as well....

    During the pandemic I was first exposed to Porcupine Tree and Steven Wilson. A gold mine in itself. Then Nightwish. Where have I been living? We are not exposed to this on normal radio. We have reactions like this to bring people in. Keep it up!

    Thanks to yours comments, everyone finds happiness in listening to Porcupine, light or hard, moments which are calculated and well adjusted with
    the voice of Steven, but also in duet, the instruments, the background, the various sounds and the mixing of all these noises which plunges us into another world although all the pieces are different they are, all, more or less a masterpiece, where the ears and the smile they give us, are the only witnesses, personly I never have enough from them and like always to discover !

    A Polish friend of mine introduced PT to me back maybe ten years ago now. Been obsessed since. I returned the favour couple years later by introducing her to Polands Riverside. You should check out thier album Second life Syndrome

    I love the way this album makes you smile. PT makes me smile like this. Every album is a masterpiece that gives the feels.
    As an aside, if you want a heavier album that will make you smile listen to Warcrab - The Howling Silence. That is such a feel good album that will make you grin like an idiot. Throwback to old school death metal but played in a sublime way.

    Welcome to the awesomeness of PT. :) They are a gift that keeps on giving. Fantastic band, amazing album, and the production is impeccable. I love Steven Wilson's solo work, but PT as a band had a particular magic that I sorely miss. Maybe the best example of the sum being more than its parts.

    Really enjoyed your reaction to the first 4 songs. You've chosen a good place to start. I think In Absentia is probably my favourite PT album, although Fear of a Blank Planet runs it close. As others have said, Steven Wilson (Porcupine Tree's frontman, main composer, vocalist and guitarist) also has an extensive catalogue of solo work and collaborations. Plenty of other stuff that will blow your mind! Looking forward to Parts 2 and 3

    Also, the subject matter for In Absentia is incredibly dark. You think you're being sung a lullaby, but you're being told a horror story! Lips of Ashes is just horrific.

    Thoroughly enjoyed your reaction... I'm an old guy who's lived through the music of the 60's, 70's and beyond and I discovered Porcupine Tree by ha[y accident a couple of years ago... probably about the same time as you did and have been seriously hocked ever since.... They are a band that have stellar musicians in it... And the wonder is that their live versions are just as awesome as thier studio versions. Keep on Rocking.... I'm going to check to see if you have done the live version of Aneathsetize yet.

    I'm always late to the party. Although I'd heard of PT, I finally got around to listening to them after they'd parted company! Still, better late than never to discover incredible music, I guess! I'm forever putting covers up on Instagram because their riffs are so damn good!

    I would do Stupid Dream next, followed by Lightbulb Sun, Fear and Deadwing. The Incident is not on that same level... Their earlier more spacey stuff is also excellent, with The Sky Moves Sideways as a real highlight...

    Porcupine Tree for me is the perfect band. They have metal riffs and excellent solos, all the changes you'd associate with prog-rock, a ton of soul and ambient sounds rare in any of the above categories. All other music feels empty after PT... except Opeth. :)

    Good luck with your channel, this is really promising! I will definately check part 2 of this reaction also. You have a lot of good music to look forward to if you just discovered Porcupine Tree! One of the best concerts I have attended was with this band - in a small theatre in Bergen, Norway ca 2010 - amazing songs and musicianship, and the sound was crystal clear! (the drummer has also played with King Crimson!)

    This album could almost be described as prog-pop, several of the songs are so catchy, but with a prog ethos - Polyrhythms and odd time signatures. Great drums from Gavin Harrison and amazing sound design from Richard Barbieri on keys and what production!

    @tiernanrea1726 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Great video, man ! Much prefer this format of reacting to the album as the band originally intended it..
    Steven Wilson tends to be a big proponent of the "concept album" for his material (with In Absentia in particular being centred around serial killers).

  • @johnquinn7794

    The vocal harmonies are a driving force of their sound. The only other band (that I’m familiar with) that did it this well was Alice In Chains. While AIC vocals were more haunting, PT is just full and glorious.

    IMO, an exploration of Porcupine Tree should start with their live performances. Very few bands are better live but indeed, many of their songs are better live. They are so clean and tight. They are all incredible musicians and Steven Wilson's voice seems to have more depth on stage.
    Where to start:
    Arriving Somewhere but not Here, live from Chicago.
    Anesthetize, live from Tilburg.
    The Start of Something Beautiful, live from Chicago.
    Dark Matter, live from. Tilburg.

    • @Scirzo
      @Scirzo 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      No, not again those songs. I like it much better this way: full album from beginning to end, like it was intended (for sure) by this artist. This way people get to know them the right way. I personally find many other songs by PT much much better then most songs you mention and I feel more people should know more songs then only these few. I've seen enough reactors doing these songs. So: don't do these songs individually, but take the albums and listen to them as a whole and start with Signify after this one. It's a much much better trip then singling out a few "greatest reactor hits".
