Arriving Somewhere But Here is truly an amazing song. It spoke to me on completely different level the second I realized that it's about young adulthood. The feelings of despair and not knowing what comes next. That child dies in you and your new life comes after. As child you have many dreams and illusions that just simply disappear or need to be simplified in order to be possible. He drives in a metaphorical car (metaphor he also uses in a song "Open Car") and reached his destination, adulthood, but it doesn't look like anything he imagined, therefore, he must be somewhere else entirely. I'm sure there are many different ways to interpret the lyrics, but this really resonated with me being in my 20s.
Love your commentary btw :) , it's always nice to see someone's first reaction to this masterpiece. You made my day 💥 can't wait for your reaction to "Fear of a Blank Planet". You gonna love it so much.

Believe it or not, they can reproduce "Arriving Somewhere But Not Here"... Just like the album.... if anything it has more colour live.... Even down to the drum pad sounds that must have been an effect in the studio.... The soundguy must have his finger over the effects button on the patch board from the drum mics...And then he has to release the effect at JUST the right moment... I can only imagine that the sound guy is doing ALL sorts of stuff here. The echoe's on Stevens voice are all there.... Everything, all the keyboard sounds from Richard at the start.. etc. The only difference live is the guitar 4 figure that is faded in at the beginning is so superbly locked in between Steven ending the figure before and the other guitarist flicking in... As you would expect from Steven, all the live audio is superb... even on youtube. Keep oin Rocking.

Indeed. Also, they do have triggers for some of the vocal harmonies and other things. But not that much.

I haven't heard you say anything about keyboardist's Richard Barbieri's contribution to PT's sound. He doesn't do solos, but his soundscapes play a huge part in creating the moods you love so much.

As a metalhead, I am not sure if you are familiar with Opeth or not, but Steven Wilson's good friend and Opeth Frontman Mikael Akerfeldt does one of the solos on "Arriving Somewhere But Not Here"
Steven Wilson Produced and provided backing vocals (and chorus vocals on Bleak) on 4 Opeth Albums, all of which I recommend checking out if you were unfamiliar. Blackwater Park (seen by many as their magnum Opus), Deliverance, Damnation, and Pale Communion.
So after Deadwing, do Fear of a Blank Planet then do Blackwater Park if you have never heard that album. Two of my all-time favorites

Porcupine tree is a mesmerizing band. I'm 64 years old and they're my favorite band. My son introduced me to them a few years ago.

Are you aware they have refomed and are touring from September and have a new album Closure/Continuation, amazing band and when they play live they are able to bring a more powerful version fom the studio recording, there are not many bands that can do that this. Steven Wilson their leader front guy and main force is a musicak genius and is worth checking out his solo output, with his material and his and PT's music is a rabbit hole.

Arriving is one of my all time favorite PT tracks. This whole trio of albums (In Absentia, Deadwing, and Fear of a Blank Planet) are epic, perfect albums.
PT went on what everybody assumed was a permanent hiatus but just recently got back together again for a new album, and it’s terrific.

Wilsons back catalogue is huge and insanely varied, whether its with PT, Blackfield, solo or collaborating with others. Its also why he's the goto guy for remixes by bands a diverse as King Crimson and XTC.

These guys were into King crimson and Pink Floyd. You can hear it in their music. In fact, their drummer, Gavin Harrison, played for King crimson in the '80s. Gavin, Harrison and Danny from tool are the Best drummers to date as far as I'm concerned.

Steven Wilson is a musical genius and I suggest that you check out his solo material and another band he was in called blackfield. He's really good friends with the singer from opus so you might want to check them out too because they do some collaborations.

I hope you continue to listen/react to this album! It definitely is top tier in their discography. But my personal favorite by them (Even though that is very difficult to do) would be Lightbulb Sun (2000). I would highly recommend to react and experience that album in it's entirety .

I was a guitar player growing up in the '70s with led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd. I learned to play all that music. Pat life goes on and the old music doesn't hit me like the new music. I love porcupine tree, tool, puscifer, Queens of the Stone age, airbag, and all of the really good bands that are out today. Old people. My age that are into the old fashioned rock and roll are boring as f***. Listen to something new people!

Porcupine Tree rule of thumb - live is always better then the studio version, a truly stunning live band.

PT have been my favourite band since I found them by chance in 1999.
I have an idea for you. The next album on is Fear of a Blank Planet. Do that next. The next thing they released was a live concert dvd where they played the whole album for the first set.......

Amazing reaction my friend....In 2017, the music world was shocked by the bursting onto the scene of a 22-year-old singer named Dimash Kudaibergen, who performed on the famous Chinese competition show for professional singers called “The Singer”... It was just it was necessary for this young man to make his first appearance, making a cover of one of the most difficult songs in the world, a famous French composition called "S.O.S. D'un Terrien En Détresse", to be considered from that moment on as the best singer in the entire planet....No one in the musical field had ever seen a human being, being able to reach vocal ranges above 7 octaves and several semitones, that is, all 88 keys of a digital piano, which reaches a little more than 7 octaves and as if that weren't enough, sing the more than 12 languages...Since then all kinds of experts (Vocal coachs, singers, musicians, analysts, singing teachers, youtubers, reactors, etc.) have dedicated themselves to reviewing their presentations to try to understand how someone can sing this way...The incredible thing is that that presentation in China was in 2017 but what Dimash has done in these 5 years is to further improve his wide vocal range, which is currently practically above of the 8 octaves... The Covid pandemic stopped his concerts worldwide, all with tickets sold in just seconds, via the internet, but at the same time it ended up catapulting him to the top of popularity worldwide...Anyway, since I think you are one of those reactors who have not yet met this impressive singer, here is the link of that presentation in China in 2017, with the song S.O.S. and I would like you to mention my name as the person who recommended him to you...You have to be prepared because your channel will explode with an avalanche of views, comments and new subscribers....I leave you one more recent video than the others, so it does not have the same number of views as the previous ones, which have millions of views, but it is a more complete video, with an intro, subtitles in several languages and with the improved quality of audio and sound....th-cam.com/video/bDX3FhmyNac/w-d-xo.html
