No one ever mentions that the Wii Remote was first in development as a GameCube accessory. After stuff like Guitar Hero and DDR proved popular on the PlayStation 2, Nintendo announced that they had no intention of releasing a next generation system to compete with the then-upcoming XBOX 360 and PlayStation 3. Instead, they said they would extend the life of the GameCube with new and innovative accessories that similarly enable new gameplay experiences. They specifically said this was because the extra horsepower of the 360 and PS3 did nothing for enabling new kinds of gameplay and the GC was powerful enough to play pretty much any game that could be made for those without watering down the gameplay (watered down graphics, of course). You have to remember that this was right after the DS had proved a hit by having gameplay experiences you couldn't duplicate on the PSP even with the extra horsepower. Anyway, Nintendo clearly made an effort to do what they said. You got stuff like DDR Mario Mix (dance mat), Mario Party 5 (mic), Odama (mic+controller clip), Donkey Konga 1 & 2 (bongo controller), Wario Ware Mega Party Games (GBA), DK Jungle Beat (bongos), and more. DK Barrel Blast was supposed to be a bongo game on GCN too but it got delayed and released as a Wii game. Chibi Robo, on the other hand, was released with standard GCN controls despite originally being designed for a new GC controller: the pointer remote that eventually became the Wii Remote. The GCN was not a very successful system and making a series of pointer remote games for it would only further fragment the GCN's already small portion of the gaming market. Someone recognized that it had way too much potential to be wasted on such a thing (GCN Chibi Robo!) and, instead, decided to make it the standard controller for what is essentially a relaunch of GCN hardware: The Wii. That would ensure that every subsequent game supports it and they could update/modernize in other ways (internal storage, SD card, WiFi, Bluetooth, USB, extra memory, better clock speeds, etc). In a way, they stuck to their guns about not releasing a higher performance console to compete on specs in that generation... and despite everyone moaning and groaning about the Wii's performance, Nintendo proved it was the right choice by setting unbelievable sales records (easily outselling the others). The pointer remote never could have done that for the GameCube and anything 360/PS3-class never would have sold as many due to price so they clearly made the right choice. I don't think the earliest Chibi Robo versions of the pointer remote had accelerometers inside and were pretty much just the IR pointer and some buttons. All the fancy stuff like speaker, accelerometers, wireless, in-controller storage, etc came about when they expanded the scope with aims to make it a standard controller. Because the Wii is a GCN, it makes sense that Metroid Prime 3 and other Wii Remote games started development on GCN Dev units with prototype controller hardware, but I do wonder if they ever intended to release MP3 Corruption on GCN with the pointer remote. ;)
It is very fortunate that they realized that releasing motion controls for the Gamecube instead of making a new console was a bad idea. Could you imagine if they had gone through with that plan and never released the Wii? Not only would the company be in a very different place today but there would have probably only been like 10 games on the Gamecube that supported the motion controls and out of those only 3-4 would have been worth playing.
@@HerecomestheCalavera ...and hardly anyone would have played them. :( Only the most hardcore Nintendo fans, really. By the time they made a new console someone else in the market would have taken the underutilized idea from the Gamecube and made something similar, watering down Nintendo's own potential with a new console and making it seem less novel, even if it was 360/PS3-class in performance.

You realize the name of this channel, right? Lol. It's even in the theme song... "we're hard for games." Also one of the most underrated theme songs!
It's amazing to think that a GameCube could be used as a Wii Devkit. All you gotta do, is overclock it, put in a hard drive, put in more ram, and a full size DVD drive. Then you could install the Wii OS and use it as a Wii. I'll bet it's not so easy, but it's a fun thought.
I doubt overlocking would help a lot. The wiis cpu has double the performance and a better gpu. Many people don’t realise that the Wii is much more of a GameCube Pro then a GameCube with a new controller in terms of power
This may be devkit only. I GameCube would not recognize this controller correctly and you'll get weird results, you'd need a game specifically made to use this controller to work. And the Wii won't recognize these either for the same reasons
@@mspeter97 Duh, but the Wii is easily hacked and has upgraded RAM. He's asking if they could run the dev stuff on a hacked or dev Wii with GC ports. Maybe a dev Wii has even more memory...
Nope, in the video he said the only games that could use it ran on GameCube dev kits so you're limited to GameCube dev kits (and maybe Wii/Dolphin dev kits).
Found my way here while going over old Rayman 4 prototype footage due to the recent leak. This controller features heavily in Rayman Raving Rabbids' original teaser trailer. The trailer features a family taking turns to play the game. Seems they went to great lengths to try and hide that black cable in all the footage. All the actors were dressed in long sleeved clothing so they could hide the cable up their sleeves, and they never show the controller exchanging hands without a cut in the footage. It even looks like they may have manually painted out the cable in some shots. However, in a couple shots, you can still see the black cable coming from the control, and running up the actors' sleeves. I always wondered why the controller looked so different in that trailer, but I never took the time to look into it until now. Feels weird seeing this controller in such clear video quality.
The Metroid Prime demo can be played on a GDEV - so you either need ODEM card and cables or a NPDP cart and a NPDP writer... GDEV has GC controller ports and memory card ports. Will these controllers not function with GDEV?
This is fucking amazing. I took a few Wii remotes apart for tinkering when the Wii launched and I was surprised that the hardware was basically identical to the Gamecube controller. You can actually replace the Nunchuck stick with a Gamecube stick! The Wii really is just a bigger badder Gamecube, so it doesn't surprise me. What a cool piece of hardware! Thanks for the video!
FairButNotReally it’s a prototype made for test units that doesn’t work on the retail GameCube and predates the decision to repackage the dolphin hardware as a new console instead of simply releasing the new controllers. the connector for the prototype nunchuck is actually RJ45, they probably never intended to use it in final as it is a lot less durable connector and was only used because it was cheap and already there (though yes it is the same connector used for ethernet cables)
My favorite controller is the Xbox 360 wired controller with the analog stick from a gamecube, the D-pad from a Dreamcast controller. The A and X buttons replaced with NES buttons, B and Y replaced with buttons from a Genesis 3 button controller, the left shoulder button from a SNES controller and the right shoulder button from a 3DO controller. The start button from a Sega Saturn and the select button from PS1 controller. And finally the gas and brake pedals from a Microsoft Sidewinder wheel for the left and right triggers. For some reason this controller is called the Colecovision Collision Action Pad even though it is not compatible with a Colecovision nor does it feature any buttons from a Coleco controller. In addition to hooking up to any device that accepts USB controllers it has an adapter so it can also be used on the Atari Jaguar. A polish hacker from Greenland produced 3 and half of them back in 2009. I was lucky enough to get one before he ran out. It is unknown who bought the other two and a half ones. Perhaps one day you can do a video about it. I know I'd smash the like button if you did!

YamaAgni I was just playing xenoblade earlier this year and feel that. It’s definitely one of those wii games that really makes me yearn for GameCube controller support. Was a great time though really enjoyed the combat, exploring the world, story, characters, and most importantly playing large parts of the game with all the guys wearing next to nothing. Not to mention that amazing score
The RJ jack that is used in ethernet is somewhat common as development hardware connector, some dev kits had rj jacks for controller connectors etc. Calling it ethernet is correct and not as the jack is kinda one thing and the cable standard another. The RJ jack for 2/4 cables that phones use are also used for stuff like removable cable of IBM keyboards etc as well and seen in consumer products unlike these.
Kinda surprising that the prototype controller uses an 8p8c connector that's had a strain relief jacket molded in. I would have expected they would be using 8p8c and Cat5 cable since it's an easy way to have 8 conductors in a wire with low crosstalk that can be crimped in a matter of minutes for easy prototyping since crimping together Ethernet cables is easy to do and would make for a nice clean connector. Not to mention that punch down blocks would make for easy break out boards. Strain relief isn't necessary but if they were going to use it I would have expected them to use a slip on boot, instead this has a machine injection overmolded strain relief boot as evidenced by the fact that plastic was flown down into the end of the connector. Machines that do that aren't something you just buy for an office they're expensive as hell, like, factory equipment, so either Nintendo was chopping up pre-made off the shelf patch cables for some reason or perhaps this was relatively late prototype? It couldn't be TOO late in prototyping since Nintendo like any big company would do a lot of validation and a new connector would put a lot of variables in place for that. I would be surprised if they were planning to ship it with an 8p8c connector both since consumers might try to plug the ends into stuff and potentially damage it and because an 8p8c connector really isn't designed for the number of cycles something like a wii nunchuck would see especially since that little clip that holds it in tends to break off. Either way it's really interesting, and that and the GBA buttons make me doubt this was meant to be a "in the hands of consumers and testers" level prototype. I would love to know what's inside the nunchuck, were they using a punchdown block or like, screw terminals or did they solder the cable in?
IGN has an article referring to the Wii Remotes as being hardware for the GameCube, not its own thing. As I understand Nintendo initially intended to have this hardware as an accessory for GameCube.
I honestly thought that he might’ve had that surgery where they take the big toe to replace a thumb or something like that but your comment makes a lot more sense.
I imagine they used a UTP cable to connect the Nunchuck o the Wiimote prototypes *precisely* because they're a prototype. After all, you don't just make proprietary hardware for something that might not even go into full production
If you really research you'll find that they really wanted the Gamecube to go further. Personally it's my favorite system, but they were indeed originally going to make the motion sensor for the gamecube, but decided against it since gamecube sales were horrible and had a bad reputation in the day. The Wii basically has even close to the same processor as the gamecube, and the specs are near the same as well. They also hoped to make online play big initially on gamecube, but the only game to really take advantage of it was Fantasy star online, it was also one of the first to have a digital video output, though component cables are now rare and didnt sell well, they even took off the port in later gamecube. Theres a lot of cool things about the system I just love. Like one of the ports on the bottom. No one really knows what it's for, they never made anything for it and also removed it later on. As well as games they never released for it. Idk I just think its interesting and a fun system
Nice New Pork City sticker at 00:58. You hear about Fangamer's Classic merch sale? They're running down their old products so they aren't skirting Nintendo's copyright laws anymore.
@Smattless I agree, they do need to change the name. It was ok when the channel was started over 10 years ago when they were younger guys making goofy videos of drinking and playing games, but the channel is much different now and has high quality informative content. A name change might actually help bring new traffic to their channel. What name would you recommend? All I can really think of is "H4G something" like H4G Rare Retro Reviews only better lol. Then they could still keep H4G in the name but just refer to it as H4G and not Hard4Games.

but can it emulate a wiimote on dolphin with an adapter? also you guys said prototype so much that youtube thought you were talking about the game lol.
i thought that nintendo didn't like the motion control patent they acquired and didn't start to work with it until project revolution... looks like i got told some fibs

Nice New Pork City sticker at 00:58. You hear about Fangamer's Classic merch sale? They're running down their old products so they aren't skirting Nintendo's copyright laws anymore.
Gameboy advanced sp has my favorite buttons. On anything. Ever made.
Maybe I COULD post in the comments, but will I?
No way im not gonna
Good choice

Yes, Nintendo used to use Ethernet cablesfor their prototype controllers. Even the GameCube prototype used an Ethernet cable setup.
Are those 64DD discs in orange, red, and yellow on the right of the picture? what?
lol yes...kinda... they are replica disks we made originally for charity. Selling the leftovers. Not functional, just for show/fun!
@@hard4games Oh... I missed that. I was confused about they meant. I know prototype disks are blue and all, so...
NEED TO SEE SOME FOOTBALL GAME WITH THIS
These prototypes must've been created between February to July 2003, after the GBA SP was announced in January of that year
Awesome! I just saw this in another person's video for a brief moment.
@@user-A-png What?
They're called club thumbs. My family has that gene too. Thanks mom!
Excellent content as always! Keep it like that guys. Thanks thanks thanks
I wonder if anyone saw the joy-con + button and thought "Why is Nintendo making such tiny D-Pads again?"
We want gameplay!!
How y'all don't have 1mil subs is beyond me.
Maybe it has to do with the fact they are called Hard4Games lol
@Smattless I agree, they do need to change the name. It was ok when the channel was started over 10 years ago when they were younger guys making goofy videos of drinking and playing games, but the channel is much different now and has high quality informative content. A name change might actually help bring new traffic to their channel. What name would you recommend? All I can really think of is "H4G something" like H4G Rare Retro Reviews only better lol. Then they could still keep H4G in the name but just refer to it as H4G and not Hard4Games.
The super mutants called and they want their thumbs back.
Someone should try to reproduce this so it's Wireless and works for the wii
That woulda made the Wii a hit!!!
@@hard4games especially the grip for the B button it looks so comfortable
What is the Prototype Wii remotes was worked alongside Mario 128 maybe that could be the reason why Mario pushes other Marios in the demo
Wish they stuck with that dev Wii remote instead of what they released. Them gameboy buttons are spicy
POV: The nunchuck actually has a LAN cable
Cool prototype :)
It'd be sooo cool to see Super Mario Sunshine played with that, then compared to Super Mario Galaxy.
I came for the controller and stayed for the guys weird left toe-thumb
I was disappointing that the prototype Wii controller was not tested
So when are you getting that RAM upgraded? ;)
emukidid damn. Now I can’t stop looking at it.
Great video guys! Two "Big Thumbs" up!
👍👍
Your left thumb is monstrous because you have brachydactyly type D. It's the genetic shortening of one or both thumbs and is often referred to by the internet as "toe thumb". I have it on my left side too. Megan Fox has it on both sides.
Lol he knows
but can it emulate a wiimote on dolphin with an adapter? also you guys said prototype so much that youtube thought you were talking about the game lol.
Ik thats why i put it at top
To be honest I wonder if this could work with that prime 3 corruption demo (for the gamecube) But that would need extra ram
Thats a Weird left Thumb Nail dude!!!... Even more than the Wii prototype Controller... xD
What if you used the Wii's gamecube controller ports and memory card slots to try and use this prototype controller on an actual Wii?
Where do you work that you clean controllers all day?
What is johns job where he cleans controllers?
I will refresh 15 times, just for you.
John you cant fool us into posting comments! Were smarter that that!
love stuff like this, i wonder if you could use it on any games
im sure it wouldn't work on retail games but
Video ends at 5:42 and then was padded out for that 10 minute mark.
i thought that nintendo didn't like the motion control patent they acquired and didn't start to work with it until project revolution... looks like i got told some fibs
Hmm wonder if theres a way to use wiimotes with vr applications
Is that Tony in the picture with the guitar??
8:20 LOL I have the same thumbs, they're called clubbed thumbs HAHAHA most people who have them have no idea
@@AndrewKennethColborn That's because it isn't, obviously! Just like many people are born with things that aren't "right" ;)
Im curious to see if this would work in the Wii GameCube controller ports
Why do I actually want this? It’s so cool!
Commenting to help with the numbers.
I'd be very much curious if this would be recognized in an emulator, or something for example like a home arcade system running batocera...
Fascinating. Great Share. Thank you.
The Wii Prototype controller was quite wee lol
Look in the discription shows prototype 2009 the game 😉
God I love this channel
