The PowerA is not nearly as bad as the old madcatz GameCube controllers. It's pretty close to OEM. It beats the hell out of the Wii U Hyperkin Procube, which isn't really even a fair comparison.

Compared to the two controllers that came out during the Wii U times I actually think the power A GameCube controller is More closely to a real gamecube controller.
I did like the PDP wire fight pad over the hori Battle pad though because it felt less bad and I actually happens to like it but it is definitely less authentic.
When I say less bad I mean that the hori one felt like they didn't have quality controller something.
Edit: basically my only complaint with the power A controller was that it doesn't have rumble other than that it has all the features to play on switch perfectly blind including motion controls. Now if you were to find some way to use it on a real GameCube then the shoulder buttons are really shallow and obviously don't have any trigger actuation because switch doesn't have that. It's also a little bit flat on top which depending one how you hold it can be annoying though it doesn't bother me.

Although I appreciate the video and the comparison/review of all the controllers, I don't really see what the purpose is? A lot of these have different use case scenarios and are even limited to that specific use case to where it really can't be compared or selected. For instance, the one that was selected by the guy in the leather. Isn't that specific to portable? Also, some have GameCube layouts and some don't. I guess to me, there should be a pick for one with a true GameCube layout and one without for portable and non-portable.

Also, the buttons on the handles are really easy to get accidental presses on making them more harm than good. I also prefer the stick layout of the Pro controller to the PS style that 8bit Do offers. It's more comfortable in my opinion. Thank you guys for emphasizing the importance of button/stick feel. I don't understand how so many third-party companies haven't figured out how to make face buttons that feel good and consistent. The ideal ratios are there for the taking. Valve seemingly copied the Xbox face buttons for the Steam Deck and they feel amazing. Nintendo reproduced the N64 controller after two decades and it's indistinguishably perfect. Take some first-party controllers apart and take some damn measurements.

I've definitely fallen in love with the Nyxi GameCube joycons, they may not feel 100% like the GameCube controllers I still have after all these long years but they give me the button placement and feel I've been waiting for since Switch launched. Also doesn't hurt that the sticks are the new Hall sensor sticks rather than the cheap sticks first party controllers insist on using that drift fairly easily.

    • @TheDeathmail
      @TheDeathmail ปีที่แล้ว

The only reason the 1st party controller sticks are cheap are because of how many first party controllers are being sold using the technology (and lots of other companies started liking them too).
Weirdly enough, they feel much better than Hall sensors (which is technically old tech)... the issue (which was only found out because of how many Switches were sold) is that they more easily drift...

In the original, the gate is tilted at an angle, to follow better the natural angle of the thumb (from holding the controller). Nintendo did because in the N64 controller the thumb was positioned naturally vertically aligned with the analog stick.
This is one of the main advantages that the original controller has and many of these imitations fail to implement.

There will never be a good replacement for the gamecube controller that actually feels correct, manufacturers need to stop wasting time on useless stuff like turbo that no one uses and actually focus on the important parts. Stick resistance, stick height, proper GC stick caps of the correct material and shape, gate size, button resistance and shape, actual GC style trigger buttons (I’m fine with improved Z tho), good GC style rumble, proper plastic and coating for overall feel and for the love of god don’t take cheap shortcuts. GC style controllers are supposed to be a niche for people that want a controller that works like a GC controller, not just looks like one. It should be required to have either a competitive smash player or a Mario Sunshine speedrunner to approve of these things to stop wasting everyone’s time with useless plastic. I will say PowerA's second attempt at the third party gamecube controller that they released with revisions that were recommended by the community actually feels, in my honest opinion, the closest any third party company has gotten to recreating the feel of the Gamecube controller. The triggers no longer fully travel, which was recommended by the community and is honestly for the best considering a switch controller has no analogue trigger functionality. The new triggers feel very much like the feel of a plugged trigger which is a very common mod for Smash Ultimate players to do to OEM Gamecube controllers. They also made the "z buttons" way higher and more comfortable to actually use as shoulder buttons, and they also made the d pad way bigger than OEM. The plastic and rubber of the sticks do not feel as high quality as the OEM, but other than that, the feel has been spot on (bar the quality of life and switch required additions). It's personally my favorite controller to use on my switch.

To me, the requirements for a perfect modern GameCube controller include analog triggers that feel and function exactly the same as the OEM models, the four face buttons being in the exact same positions as the originals and the controller shape that’s exactly the same or similar to the original.
Manufacturers can make plenty of improvements to the design such as have the same number of buttons as the modern controllers and making the body shape larger, but if it doesn’t have the above criteria, it’s simply not a GameCube controller.

An ideal situation for me would just be something you attach to the Gamecube adapter that sort of turns it into a Pro Controller, or makes the Switch think it is one. That would let you remap buttons and maybe it could add the home, minus, and share buttons on the device itself, or let you use macros to press them.

Controller development is no joke. I remember reading an article back in the day that said Sony had spent over 100 million dollars developing the dual shock 3 (or maybe the ds4, I can't quite remember). Third party companies are more like leeches on the industry, rarely putting in the development effort, and just trying to make a quick buck. Very cool then, that at least one out there is interested in taking some feedback (at the very least) from gc controller aficionado.
That retro flag controller looks interesting, especially for something sold on AliExpress. (I ordered the Nyxi Wizard, but still waiting like everyone else lol)

Nothing like the OG Game Cube controller. I just wish a controller the same OG feeling, capture and menu button, gyro and rumble amd joycon style like that white one they showed. That's it. But trying to mimic the og formula is the key!

The Retroflag controller makes the Switch a handheld dream console
I was playing mostly on TV and tabletop because I love the ProController, but since I got my Retroflag I play 100% handheld with my Oled and it's a dream 👌❤💯

Something that wasn't mentioned, and I wish it was, was that a lot of these controllers feel super wonky in-game so while there's certainly "button and stick feel," sticks specifically are notoriously funky and weird in third party controllers, with an annoying tendency to "snap" to the X and Y axis, making playing games like Mario 64 feel absolutely wrong and clunky when it came to those N64 controllers that were coming out a few years back.
No one ever tests Mario's movements with those N64 third party controllers, and its the best test to use. OEM N64 is smooth as butter despite how much people complain about the stick, while the new third party ones all snap to the X and Y axis, and make moving Mario in true analog space impossible. There's always a notable step at like a 15-20 degree push away from the axis that snaps it on to the zero.

I think my favorite one is the Retro Flag. I have seen a couple other videos on that controller. I would buy that one since it actually attaches to the Switch and would help me hold the Switch. I think that one also comes in a variant for the OLED.

Switch controller i have is weird in the motion for the TV. (i have house of the dead remake) It starts to wonder then it's off center. At least there is a auto calibration button. The wii motion plus was better when i tried house of the dead 2 and 3 and some other gun games.
Hope they settle joycon drift. i don't have that issue i don't think.
I still think third party controllers need to put in all the features of the console.
What's the point of a controller if it doesn't use a feature implemented in a game. What are you suppose to do? Like switch rumble or gyro.
I guess just a bunch of PC controllers that partly work on that console.
Wonder why they didn't keep the GameCube design. It was pretty awesome. It feels weird playing smash bros without the GameCube controller.

Shank might be the only other super particular face button weirdo like me. People always talk about the sticks and triggers and all the extra functionality, but really I need about 2 hours of just clicking the face buttons before I know if I wanna buy the thing.
