    I've only had my mind blown twice by musical acts. The first time was when I was introduced to the Canadian band "Rush", in 1980, when I was 14 years old. The second was when I discovered Lovebites in 2019, at the age of 53.
    Regarding Miyako's piano playing: I saw a list of her favorite composers, and realized that it was almost exactly the same as my mother's (also a classical pianist) list of favorites. I can remember hearing my mom play "Revolutionary Etude" when I was a kid.

    The vocalist Asami was a ballerina for some 15 years until she graduated from high school and then moved to Los Angeles to learn hip-hop and jazz dance. That is why you noticed her graceful arm movements that only ballet dancers would do. She might be the only former ballerina in all of metal history. She also plays piano but not as profeciently as guitarist Miyako whom you've seen here and is a professional concert level pianist. Asami has a background in R&B, Soul, and didn't realize that she could hit high and sustained notes for Power Metal prior to joining Lovebites. She didn't even know Heavy Metal at all so it was all new to her. There is another song, a ballad called 'A Frozen Serenade' from a 2021 live concert in Tokyo that shows Asami dancing like a ballerina in a snow globe.

    LOVEBITES is not like other bands. They are on a level by themselves. They have no Peer. Only listening to a couple of songs won't even get you into the front door of what LOVEBITES does or has instore. You'll have to go on the journey to see what I am saying is true. You haven't yet scratched the surface. They are not only good. they are the Phenomena of our age! 🤘🤘

    Congratulations, you just found the best new metal band to come along in decades. In their first five years of existence, they put themselves on par with the greatest bands of metal’s golden age. Other reviewers have described them as alien superheroes disguised as young women, angels, princesses of metal, and angry bridesmaids. They recently went on a year-and-a half hiatus while they searched for a new bassist. They announced the new bassist in October 2022 (see below) and dropped their first new song on December 22. Their new album, “Judgement Day”, was released two months later. Some background:
    They were formed in 2016 from the remnants of a legendary all-girl Japanese metal band called Destrose (yes, all-girl metal has been a thing in Japan since at least 1981). Miho (bass, chief headbanger and founder of the band) had a vision of a new band in the style of the great European bands of the golden age of metal. She recruited her former bandmate Haruna (drums, 4'9" “pocket nuclear reactor”); they needed two world-class guitarists, and so they went and found Midori and Miyako, who were with other groups. The four of them then found Asami, the singer, who was doing soul and blues at the time (she was also trained in ballet).
    Miyako has composed a little more than half of their music, with Miho composing a lot of their thrashier songs in collaboration with Mao, the lead composer of another band called Lightbringer. Midori has also been getting into the act, and they regularly perform a song written by Haruna as well. Asami writes most of the lyrics and is also getting involved in composing.
    In mid-2021, Miho left the band she had founded, for personal reasons. They went on hiatus while they searched for a new bassist, and during that time, two of them had babies, even as the band were writing and rehearsing their new album. They recently announced the new bassist, Fami, who is a young phenom and herself a composer and multi-instrumentalist. Their first song with Fami is “Judgement Day” th-cam.com/video/m3uGjp-P7DI/w-d-xo.html
    The instrumentalists studied all the great historical metal bands going back to Purple and Sabbath, through Maiden, Priest, Metallica, Helloween, Slayer etc. They have incorporated some of the best of each of those bands into their arsenal, and have created a sound that is fresh and cutting edge while paying tribute to the old masters. They toured with Dragonforce in 2019, and word from those in attendance was that next time around, it will be the ladies headlining.
    They do everything from soulful power ballads to heavy thrash. Almost every song includes face-melting solos by Miyako and Midori. The two guitarists are quite different in style and tone. Midori (blonde ponytail) is the extrovert and speed demon; Miyako is the introvert, with the more soulful feel (though she can also shred like crazy). Midori uses a cleaner tone, Miyako uses more distortion, pinch harmonics and pedal effects. The contrast makes their duets rich and dynamic. It doesn’t hurt that either one can smoke most of the shredders in the classic metal bands. As another reviewer said, "It seems criminal these two are allowed to be in the same band."
    Re. "Swan Song": For your viewers who may not know the background, Chopin (pronounced Show-pan in French, Chop-in in Polish) was a Polish-born Romantic-era (1800’s) classical composer and piano virtuoso who lived most of his life in France. He is considered one of the great classical composers, specializing in highly technical works for piano. Miyako, who composes a lot of Lovebites’ music, is a professional-level concert pianist, and was originally going to make classical music her career. When she was 18, she picked up a guitar, and is now (quite obviously) an elite-level guitarist. She particularly likes the Romantic Era classical composers like Debussy, Dvořák and Chopin, as well as the Russian romantic composer Rachmaninoff. She composed “Swan Song” using elements of the New World Symphony (Dvořák) and Chopin’s Revolutionary Etude (official name Étude Opus 10, No. 12 in C minor). For this performance, she actually played the Etude as a prelude, but it’s not normally included in their shows. All five members of the band are Jedi-level musicians, but I think Miyako is a once-in-a generation talent, a true savant.
    Here are more clips you should check out:
    “Set the World on Fire” th-cam.com/video/99zsH6iG_6c/w-d-xo.html from their 2021 concert DVD “Heavy Metal Never Dies”.
    “Don’t Bite the Dust” th-cam.com/video/oHnKGEj1CMc/w-d-xo.html, from the same concert;
    "Edge of the World" and "We the United", back to back: th-cam.com/video/sl0-U-ykJCU/w-d-xo.html They form an incredible journey from darkness and despair to light and hope.
    Also, “Empty Daydream”, which starts as a ballad and becomes a real rocker: th-cam.com/video/lXh_uMM94jU/w-d-xo.html;
    Perhaps their greatest masterpiece, a showcase of multi-instrumental virtuosity and even classical dance “A Frozen Serenade” th-cam.com/video/Ae8pQVu-RN8/w-d-xo.html;
    And their most reacted-to video, “Holy War”: th-cam.com/video/bgAxpEpEcno/w-d-xo.html
    For a thrasher with heavy Slayer and Metallica vibes, “Break the Wall” th-cam.com/video/5Pc0XK0lNmU/w-d-xo.html includes two gorgeous and completely contrasting solos by M&M.
    For a heart-stopping ballad, “Epilogue” th-cam.com/video/1ynnXDfEnnY/w-d-xo.html (this includes a second song, your choice whether or not to react to both)
    While you will sometimes hear you should only react to live clips, actually their MV’s are epic and worth seeing. Here are four of the most spectacular:
    "Shadowmaker" th-cam.com/video/Brmoln5Gxus/w-d-xo.html
    This is the song that blew up and melted faces all over the world
    "When Destinies Align" th-cam.com/video/hLFelI93VkM/w-d-xo.html
    "Glory to the World" th-cam.com/video/-wJtD2XEXH4/w-d-xo.html
    "Winds of Transylvania" th-cam.com/video/HsE4Ub_Pjh8/w-d-xo.html.
    Finally, the audio tracks of some of the new album are up on youtube, and worth checking out. The band clearly came out swinging and wanted to make a statement. Every song on the album is a showcase of their incredible talent and songwriting capabilities. “Stand and Deliver” is a thrasher with a fun video of them in the studio. “Soldier Stands Solitarily”, the final song on the album, is being touted by some as the best thing they’ve done so far-I encourage you to see and decide for yourself!
    You'll get lots of suggestions, just one thing: don't bother with Bloodstock footage, the sound quality is poor. Best to take suggestions with actual links. Also, you can’t go wrong with any of their official clips. Welcome to the Wolf-Pack!

    The origin of LOVEBITES is about persevering through failure. Miho, the bass guitarist in this video, was in a band called Destrose. When Destrose finally called it quits in 2016 after many lineup changes, Miho decided to form another group that reflected the heavy metal she grew up listening to. She first contacted Destrose's second drummer, Haruna. Miyako, the brunette guitarist and pianist in this video, was somewhat free after the band she played in, A Drop of Joker, broke up. The same thing happened when a group called Gekijo★METALicche split up leaving blonde guitarist Midori available. Miho, Haruna, Miyako, and Midori all knew each other from the Japanese rock and metal festival circuit; they decided to form a band, but they needed a vocalist.
    Asami was a backup singer for acts like pop rock bands Vamps and Uverworld, plus she had a solo R&B career that wasn't really going anywhere. Deciding that she wanted to do something different, Asami recorded a demo of herself singing "Love Bites (So Do I)" by Halestorm. That demo found its way to Miho. They four instrumentalists auditioned Asami and decided they liked what they heard. The group was named after that song as it's the first one they played together.
    As a side note, Miyako was initially listed as a support member because she was involved with a band called 21g (twenty-one grams), though that band officially ended in 2019. In 2017, she was also involved in a project called Sonic Lover Reckless along with singer Aya Kamiki, though SLR ended as soon as it began. Miyako became a full member of the band by the time the second EP was released.
    Three albums, three EPs, one single, and seven live releases later, Miho suddenly left LOVEBITES in August of 2021 for undisclosed reasons and the band immediately went on hiatus. Asami got married and had a child, Miyako got married and had a child, and Midori began competing in body building/fitness competitions. Eventually the band held an extended audition process for their "fifth element," and that was won by a great musician that goes by the stage name of Fami. LOVEBITES recently released their fourth album, "Judgement Day," and so far has released two videos, the title track "Judgment Day" and "Stand and Deliver (Shoot 'Em Down)," both of which I recommend.

      Another group from Japan I would like to put on your radar is the great Wagakki Band. I'm not going to say much, but I suggest that if you do react to them, don't do any research, just go in blind and without expectations. The song I'm going to recommend is "Overture + Amenochi Kanjouron" live from their New Year show in 2018. I don't think it's their best song, but I think it's a great song to get introduced to them as it showcases their skill, energy, production values, and showmanship. Here's the link.

    Welcome to the Wolfpack! (Lovebites fans :D) - Glad to see you fully enjoying the best metal band on the planet. It's great to see more people discovering our ladies!
    You mentioned your appreciation for the lead singer (Asami) who you called a ballerina - and she did indeed study that! Asami is the group goofball, and is known as "The Golden Voice" - and metal is a new genre for her.
    Miyako is our pianist and right side guitarist, she also writes and does everything with that calm, cool professionalism. :) She is called "The Golden Touch" for a reason - everything she touches is done magically.
    Haruna is the drummer - called "The Little Engine" - because she just crushes the drum parts and rhythm section on every song, and she is completely indefatiguable!
    Midori is the blonde guitarist on the left side, and she is "The Crazy Shredder" - because, well, it is what it says. She's insanely good and aggressive shredder. She also performs in bodybuilding competitions. :)
    Finally on bass, we have the only member you see who is no longer with the band - Miho - who is just an absolute monster on bass. She was replaced on the new album by Fami - who is also a monster of a different kind! :)

    Lovebites break every “rule” in metal. No black. No leather. No studs. No Neanderthal noises. No doom and gloom lyrics. No guys. The one rule they not only enforce but reinforce is to play metal, and to play it better than anyone else ever has. No sub genre is applicable. They play heavy metal, and they somehow manage to do so better than they themselves do with each new album release!

  • @boyzyu

    Welcome to, arguably, the best metal band in the world today. The lady who shuffles from piano to lead guitar and back to the piano is Miyako. She is a musical genius/prodigy who plays guitar, piano/keyboards, the bass and the drums, and she also composes and arranges about half of Lovebites' discography of around 60 songs. Haruna is the drummer and she's a beast who can double paddle at these speeds for a nearly 2-hour LIVE concert. Asami is the powerful yet melodic vocalist whose mid-to-high vocals can cut above Lovebites' fast-paced and heavy riffs & licks with ease. Midori is the other lead guitarist whom we call "the crazy shredder". Miho is the bass player in this video but she left the band back in 2021 and she has now been replaced by another phenomenal bass player called Fami.
    Miyako, who is a classically trained pianist, was inspired by Frédéric Chopin's Étude Op. 10, No. 12 (also known as the "Revolutionary Étude") when she composed and arranged Swan Song.

    The Chopin piece performed by Miyako (guitar/keyboard) as the intro is "Etude OP10, No12", known as "Revolution Etude"
    In 1831, an uprising of some officers and civilians against the Polish government under the de facto control of the Russian Empire, dubbed the "November Revolution", failed due to the direct intervention of Russian forces. Chopin is informed of this news during his travels. he lost his place to return to. When the Russian army invaded Warsaw, Chopin's agents released "Etude OP10, No.12" in Paris. People called it a "revolutionary etude" because of the agent's exaggerated promotion of the song.
    Miyako composed "SwanSong" with reference to this "revolutionary etude" and Dvorak's "New World Symphony".
    Former ballerina Asami (vocals) wrote a poem inspired by Norse mythology and "Swan Lake" based on the historical background of "Revolutionary Etude".
    "SwanSong" is a requiem dedicated to the warriors who fought to reclaim fatherland, a masterpiece that only LOVEBITES can complete.
    Their songs have English lyrics, but the vocalist Asami's English has some quirks, so you should turn on the CC support until you get used to it.

    I was 100% sure you would enjoy this and it looks like I wasn't wrong! :) I recommended exactly this version (I think there's also a clip without the Chopin-part) to you in a comment in the community-section, but it might be that someone else recommended it as well. The "problem" with recommending another song by Lovebites is that they all are more or less on the same quality level. I mean, I think I had originally recommended the live-version of "Break the Wall" from 2020, which is one of my overall faves and one of their heaviest songs, before I switched to this one, and I think in my last comment, I had recommended the music video of "Judgement Day", the title track of their new album featuring their new bassist. What most of their songs have in common is the high energy level you noticed in this song. If you really should do only one other reaction to a song by Lovebites, I'd urge you to at least check out all their other songs in private! As you correctly observed, they seem to have different stage personalities. But even the most "reserved" one - Miyako, who also played the piano - can also visibly enjoy herself. Just look at her and the other guitarist Midori joining Dragonforce performing "Farming Simulator" in this live-clip: th-cam.com/video/KnGPZxfOAmg/w-d-xo.html (Not a recommendation for a reaction, but to just watch and enjoy it on your own!)
    Hadn't heard the sentence "While other girls go shopping, Miyako goes Chopin." yet (though I've read comments by fans recommending "Swan Song + Shopin intro"), but that was quite funny! As regards the pronunciation of Chopin, there might be several options. Since his father was French, I'd go for the French pronunciation which is still different from the ways you said it. Since there is no similar sound in English for the "-in"-pronunciation in French, I'd recommend to simply do an online-search for the French pronunciation of Chopin and listen to it.

      In Chopin's native Polish his name is pronounced like the English word "shopping" but without the G on the end. The pronunciation of the name as "Show-pan" is of course the French version which is commonly used since he spent so much of his life in exile in France and the French have sort of culturally claimed him.

      @@michaelafrancis1361 That's why I wrote that there might be several options. BTW, the English word-combination "Show-pan" might be heading in the right direction, but does not sound like the correct French pronunciation. Sorry about the hair-splitting.
