My greatest friend died today, we used to sing this in the pub on a weekend and have the whole place singalong, I will miss him, my friend, my listener, my voice of reason, my second dad, sleep tight Jim, miss you man.
A superb rendition of the 1898 James Thornton song. Probably the best interpretation and certainly the best musicianship. If it does not bring tears to your eyes you are not of this world.
Met my wife just before her 16th birthday in 1974 , this song expresses just how i feel for her , we've gone through a lot both good and bad but always seem to weather the storm, as we approach retirement i can only look forward to the rest of our lives together, this was an al time fave of my dearly departed mum
Love this version 💚 It reminds me of Saturday mornings when I used to wake up and my dad would b listening to the fureys. 💚 brings back nice memories 💚
Way back at the turn of the last century, John Thornton was a vaudaville performer, his wife asked him "John, do you still love me"? he replied "I love you as I loved you when you were sweet sixteen". She replied "Wow, that sounds like a song, you should write one. He took up the gauntlet and the rest as they say is History. At the time, it was the first song to sell a Million sheet music copies. Al Jolson made it popular in his day...
The video of the girl running on the green and going in the door of the big house was shot on Dunlavin Green in West Wicklow. The house used to the be Perochial house. Thanks for posting - brough back some memories for my dad
Four years ago I posted my feeling for this song and my darling wife, we've just had our 38th anniversary and looking forward to our 40th and also the birth of our 1st grandchild around the 23/04/18, a boy. Love this song and listen to it regularly.
I first heard this version of the song a long time ago. It used to make me actually sob. I didn't know why. Now I think I know. It's Finbar's voice. It has the same effect on me with his older voice.

It's been many years but i remember seeing a different video clip of them performing this song, i remember they were performing out the front of an old homestead or something and they used images of the same girl throughout, does anyone have this video clip at all?
Respect to our Irish Ancestors. My Grandad was from Ireland. Percy Hardman. Maybe, you could tell me which part of Ireland the Hardman's originated from? Greetings from South Africa.nn
The Vid was made for Top of the Pops a weekly BBC production based on shakers and movers in the UK Charts, The year 1981, it certainly has that dreadfully naff early 80's music video about it? :-)
lost for words to describe how beautiful this version of this song is.
Still miss my mother, and we used to listen to this song together because she remembered it from her youth.

I absolutely love this song. Makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up and gives me goose pimples.
Beautiful.
can't help liking this tune for all that I try, an overly-sentimental lullaby so beloved of Irish musicians.
