Mr. Olsen's comments about DFM are accurate, as is Mr. Knight's rebuttal. I work in the medical industry and we come up with all sorts of amazing life-saving devices... which were never designed for DFM up front because the engineers are young and eager. A highly complex gearbox which drives an amazing motor and can fit inside a catheter sounds amazing - until you try to find a vendor to build it to spec. One of the things I've enjoyed about Knight's products (as well as several other top-tier brands) is that you can see the attention to detail and DFM, especially in current designs. Please keep these videos coming - it's amazing to hear some of the behind the scenes stories.
Doug Olson and I installed the first rifle RAS prototype rail in January 1995 , on a M16A2! What memories this all brings back! We basically talked about the future rifle design ideas then at the time which later became the M5 rail on the M16A4, and the rest is history from there! Seeing Marines such as my best friend storm into the Battle of Fallujah in April 2004, with his M16A4 with Knight's Armament rail and grip with Task Force 626 made me so proud to of been there at its beginning of the birth of the rail innovation for the military! My buddy said Dave, thanks to you I got to go with them "Army Guys " and do what they do, and they treated me like I was one of them, and being with them, saved my life in combat! That and another story about the SR25 that saved their lives from a Russian Sniper!

7:30 as someone who just finished a mechanical engineering program I felt that. AM plastics aren't super practical for firearm components yet, and DMLS is still out of reach of many, especially the NDT tech. Getting your metal printed part without voids is still black magic / secret sauce. At the same time, I am seeing a lot of college students using it as a crutch (e.g. printing an ABS gears in a super specific gear ratio for a prototype instead of buying a standard sintered gear off McMasterCarr or something).
In every war, the weapons developed their own iconic "look", and that look seemed to trend until the next war. . WW II... wood and steel Vietnam... the M16 with the triangle foregrip and the AK Global War on Terror... something in current inventory, converted with RIS, later RAS. . The first thing I did, when I got a 20" Government model AR15, was put a KAC M5 RAS kit on it. It just didn't look right without it. .
Private sector will ALWAYS lead to a more refined product, government usually leads nothing more than inefficiency.... using your own money & materials always make you measure twice...
