    Love how the unprocessed kit sounds so good. And processing doesn't unnaturally change the sound characteristics but just enhances it totally to another level.

    I do the detuning one lug thing to all of my shells from the snare to the base drum and it still surprises me at just how much you can get out of it. Gets rid of any annoying overtones and ringing, gives it a really punchy and warm tone that cuts through the mix well and is really quick. I also like that it gives the head some rebound which benefits my playing and it lowers the volume a bit where you still hear it clearly, but you don't have to use any moon gel, tape or whatever.
    I spent many years trying different things, different head combinations, watching hours worth of tuning tips, using stuff like a tension measuring gadgets and more, and still could never quite get my toms to sound the way I wished, there was always something. The detuning one log thing got rid of all of that and saves you a ton of time.

      Got a couple questions:
      1. How much do you detune the 1 lug? All the way back to finger tight? Pls define
      2. Do you tune the head a little higher than usual so that it comes back to a good pitch when you detune?

    Probably, one of the "Top 5" best sounding toms I've heard. Great model to how good toms can sound at the deep levels while still projecting excellent tonality -- A sound that I would imitate for sure...good job bro!

    I am not one who flows others on how to turn your drums, that is because< I feel turning your drums is a personal preference. As a drummer of 62 years, I played Ludwig drums most of my life. In August of 2021, I went and bought myself a DW Collector's Series in Blue Oyster Pale. It is a 8 piece drum set. It came with stocked heads and within a week of playing the drums, I went and re-headed all the drums with Evens Heads and kept, the bottom heads with the stock head, which are what the drum set came with. I love the sound that I get from my tuning. I love low, deep toms and my two floor toms are turned low and deep. It is only my advice...changing the heads on your drum set gives you freedom of a wide arrange of drum Turing.

    I kind of stumbled on that too. I tune up slightly higher batter, for feel, and JAW on all resos, then one lug, until I hit that punch and low end. Why does that work? I have no idea. But it just does. And a real time saver too.

    WOW THOSE TOMS SOUND AMAZING!

  • @RockBoBsteRMusic
    @RockBoBsteRMusic 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Sounds good, the floor toms sound completely dead. I don't know if that's what you were going for. I like my floor toms to ring out like the rack toms. They sound like you have towels over the head to me, all punch and attack, no tone.
    Check out Bob Gatzen video on drum tuning. It's about 1:30:00 but he has the best tuning advice i've ever heard. Specially, hitting the tom and detuning and re-tuning within that one hit. That way you can even out all the lugs. Normally going over the heads like that when it sounds funky, you'll hit that one lug that clears everything up.
    Best drum tuning video i've ever seen. Bob Gatzen

    • @ThatSwedishDrummer
      @ThatSwedishDrummer  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks you!
      I've seen Bob Gatzen's videos, and met him in person too. It's a very good tuning video, BUT; it doesn't apply to all types of drums, depending on shell thickness, wood type and of course it depends on what sound you're after.
      Especially for my floor toms, I'm going for more of a "Benny Greb" type of sound. They still have tone, but I'm utilizing the absolute bottom end of the floor toms so they kind of resemble a more tonal bass drum.
      For my drumming style and sound, ringing toms wouldn't go in my favor ;)
      Thanks again!! 👍

    What are your thoughts on making the toms louder, so they don't get overwhelmed by the snare? Or just lower the volume on the snare so the rest of the drums don't get lost? I always hear drum levels being set and they seem to sound OK. But once the whole band is playing, the snare sounds like a firecracker, and the toms just disappear. Happens all the time. ALL the time. ALL THE TIME.

    Sound great but you didn't actually explain how you got the sound? Ie how tight or loose you did them. What's the relationship between top and bottom heads. And it would have been good to see what you actually did with the cotton balls in the floor toms? Are they left loose or did you tape them to the top or bottom heads?

    • @ThatSwedishDrummer
      @ThatSwedishDrummer  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’m planning a full walkthrough of tuning, so stay tuned (pun intended)
      The cotton is loose in side the drum to act like a natural gate.
      I never tune toms with a specific pitch relative to the heads, I only go for the sound I like. 🤙🔥

      @@ThatSwedishDrummer Thanks for taking the time to reply. I know every drum is different and the heads make a huge difference. But it would have been interesting to know for instance if the great tuning you ended with was by tuning each rod 2 and half times or four times etc. Then when you detuned the one rod was that completely off or two turns down etc. Ditto bottom head . was that tuned higher or lower. It would give a start point for us to try to replicate the sound. I've had good results in the past using Tunebot and their recommeded tunings . Lately I've been using Rob 'Downbeat' Browns system of putting pressure in centre of the loose head and tighening each lug until the wrinkles just disapear. Thats a simple and quite effective method but I do then tweek it to get the sound that I like and to minimise snare buzz. This morning I tried thicker resonant heads and it did help to reduce the overtones a bit. Ill certainly try the cotton balls idea - must add to my next shopping list.

      Not a silly question at all! But I always tune my drums by ear, never with a tune bot or something similar.
      And you also gotta take several factors into consideration when it comes to drum sound. What wood type is the shell, ply thickness, the drum heads, the room etc. 🙌🔥

      @@ThatSwedishDrummer I usually tune by ear but I work at a place where they want the same sound each time we change heads etc.. They have a tune bot. Do you use damping inside or moon gels outside? Is your reso head tune lower and batter head tighter or vice versa? I'm just trying to get a good starting point. I've been tuning up my new Reference kit all weekend getting ready for a session, and was trying some more (typical) higher tunings, and they just didn't sound good until I went lower. It's funny you mentioned the detuning one lug thing too, because I literally just landed on that today with the rack tom's, and it literally like did the trick, then I got home and found this video lol. How are you tuning your reso's here compared to the batters? Higher or Lower, or same? They sound deadly here man!

      It also depends on what kind of heads you use! (and also the room, how you play etc. when it comes to recording)

    Just a thing to add that a coated batter head isn't good on a 10 inch Tom, it's so small in area that the lighter, thinner batter head allows the drum to resonate properly. Sure it looks a little funny to just leave one clear batter head on there but once you try it, actually you could just flip your current 10 upside down, try it and retune it. You might love the emperor as a reso head?

    • @ThatSwedishDrummer
      @ThatSwedishDrummer  ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't agree. It's a to each their own-situation. Some like thinner heads on smaller drums and some like thicker heads.

Thanks!

      Secondly: It depends what sound you want from your drums and what kind of mic you're using. In my case, I'm using a Motu 8Pre interface and the SM57 is placed by the rim, about "3 fingers" above the drum. Don't remember the gain level right off the top of my head, but I think it's at about 6/10.
