I don't understand how people don't see the beauty in this ending, the alien felt his pain, he felt the alien's pain. In that moment, Cooper realized that not all human beings are the same. We have to remember that he was tortured for decades and all he wanted to do was go home and he was denied that. It was stated in the Doctor's video that Cooper was empathetic but was molded to hate the humans, he expected help and instead received decades of wrongful imprisonment. After decades of torture, I'm sure he viewed people as simple beasts of a species and nothing more, one child's pain showed him differently. Both of them let go of their past and their pain in the ending scene and it was beautifully done. Who knows how long that Cooper constantly hid his eyes but when they were revealed, you had am expressive and intelligent being that has finally come to terms.
Whoa. Dude that was so well said. I love that and totally agree. This is my third favorite movie of all time. Also his name is Cooper!? I love that! Never knew that! Is it said in the movie?
He wasn't really in pain though, no moreso than most after a loss, by that time he was a perfectly well-adjusted boy out making friends, falling in love and making movies together.
The score is absolutely phenomenal and I think it's some of Michael Giacchino's best work. I get chills every time I watch this part of the movie because of it.
Me too. It was very touching to see when Jack embraces Joe and Louis embraces Alice as a sign to apologize to their kids when they see that they are ok after Jack and Louis became friends when Jack begans to understand for what happened to his wife wasn't on purpose by Louis, it was an accident.
Watched this movie for the first time when I was 12, I cried at the ending. Watches it at 15, cries again. I just watched this movie today and im 20 and it still manages to make me cry. This movie is damn near perfect and I hope my kids and future generations will appreciate movies like this. “You can live... You can live...”
7 years later, I seen this movie for the 6th time, it gives me the feels every time. It is so underrated, stranger things was inspired by this film, I can tell. It is my favorite film of all time.
The movie was about a boy and his father, who are deeply scarred by the death of a family member. Learning to let go of her,and the pain that came with it. Finally being free of pain, and resentment towards the past. The movie shows us that we too, need to let go of our pain, and our past, for the greater good. Also there is things that we will never be able to know,or control. And letting go is our only hope in the mess of it all.
Apparently his dad filmed JJ getting born but they said the footage was full of lens flares ...but it could have been some birthing fluid on the lens ;)
In my opinion: The alien felt the loss of his mother. Letting the locket go freed weight from his shoulders. But, it still hurts. Losing a parent is devastating! Yet we must find a way to move on.
Not sure if I've wrote a comment already, but hands down this is E.T. for the 2000's generation. I grew up in the early 90's and E.T. was the pinnacle of buddy sci-fi movies and I truly believe this is the natural successor to that film. I remember on release it took some flak but if you realistically look at the acting (first time child actors), the score, the editing, the cinematography, I know it's early doors but I truly believe this can go down as a classic. The emotion I felt in this film reminded me of 80s sci-fi (The Abyss, Aliens, etc). As much as I can't warm to modern cinema, this film eclipse s that notion. For me, it will go down as a misunderstood classic, a super film
1:58 This moment makes me remember what Mr Kaznyk said in the beginning at Joe mother wake "Jack's gonna step up. He's a good man." For once this one event made Jack finally step up and become the father Joe needs.
Love this scene, the missing piece to make the ship fly was the mother necklace. It left me a heartwarming feel, we have to let go to be able to fly, let go doesn’t mean forget but embrace and remember the good without attachments.
First saw this movie when I was 11. I'm 21 now. Every moment, every quote, every note of this soundtrack stayed with me. I'm studying film now and I can't pretend this didn't have an influence. It's about love and loss, letting go of pain. One of my favourite films and (I think) one of the most touching movies of the last two decades. There's so much to unpack and so much to enjoy. "Bad things happen. Bad things happen, but you can still live." Cried then, still cry now. What a movie and what a perfect ending. I still watch this film whenever I start losing hope in the world. I thank it for it's service
This movie is amazing. I really enjoyed it. Yeah it had its problems. There were a few things I was annoyed by. But it's got things that a suspenseful movie should have. It has action, drama, comic relief, and emotion. And one thing I really like was that they made the creature look like the villain at first. But then as we began to understand him, we realize the military were the villains. I really also like how the creature and our main protagonist built rapport with one another because they both were equally in pain and they each understand one another. This movie deserves more recognition
I got real emotion in the theater when the locket opened and you see a picture of his Mom and when he was a baby. It's the first and only time you see what she looked like.
@@mattg1611 You just don't forget the pain of losing your mom, especially if it was an accident and not an illness. Sure he will grow up, get a job, marry the girl and maybe have kids but the pain will always be there.
Real love is where we let go of the people we've lost in our hearts but memories will stay forever as long as we keep fighting for them and doing our best to keep moving forward, even it hurts like hell. We will always find a way.
If you really pay attention to the details of this ending it is more perfect than you know. Both dads were pretty selfish and pushing thier kids to the side only to realize during this emergency that they were the most important parts of their lives. We have seen Joe open this locket tons of times but here we finally see inside, as if he they are both truly acknowledging the passing of the wife/mom. It is not until Jack puts his hand on Joe's shoulder that he let's the locket go. It is the finally piece needed for the alien to fly home. JJ Abrams is fantastic in his direction of this.
I had just lost my dad my freshman year of college winter 2010, This movie came out summer 2011 and I cried my eyes out during this scene. I know the exact feeling of having to let go.
I can’t imagine being in his position, having to let go of his moms necklace. I would probably hesitate for hours and someone would have to take the necklace out of my hand and let go of it for me and watch it hover up to the tower.
Simply can't believe the locket scene made me cry again even though I've seen this movie before and knew it was coming. A work of cinematic genius akin to E.T.'s flying bicycles.
Just finished watching this film again...saw it in the theater...credits rolling and so are the tears. The ending gets me everytime because the Alien felt his pain and he wouldn't leave until the locket was released...❤ RIP Grandma.
A beautiful and simple tribute to the child / teen in the 70s and 80s. Cool, even if for a few moments, we can let go of this junk from the wild world, increasingly artificial and we can go back there even in our memories. I felt for a few moments that I was in a movie theater next to my beloved mother watching ET.
If they showed some flashback memories of his mom when he was a baby with the bgm while he was holding the chain, that would have been more emotional. Well im crying anyway so..not a biggie..
When I was younger I think this scene really got me when they held hands. I don't know why. Seeing young love made me feel sad inside. Or happy? I don't know. This entire scene though made me depressed for awhile.
Such a bittersweet and emotional ending. Love it. It feels kinda like Spielberg ending even tho he only if I am not mistaken produced the film and J. J Abrams directed it. But I bet Spielberg had a lot to do with this film and all that. Abrams has that Spielberg flavor of filmmaking tho, this feels a lot like Spielberg film. Hope you know what I mean.
Thing is, we're supposed to feel empathy for this alien creature and the sight of it leaving Earth as being beautiful and touching. Yet, the first time we see it it is gnawing on a human leg having eaten various innocent townsfolk and had them hung up as snacks for its journey. Yes it was tortured and it was angry, but it just made this scene feel really weird. I really wasn't rooting for it at all, it was just a alien monster movie that I was hoping would get blown up.
