Idk about anyone else but I am honestly so grateful to have been a child and adolescent during the times these games came out, what a time to be a kid. Pokemon was so mesmerizing back then
As a kid I was always envious of the Xbox/PS/PC folks because I only had a DS, 3DS and a shitty laptop that could barely run TH-cam. Looking back, I definitely do not regret owning those consoles. They gave me so many precious memories that I would never trade away.
To be fair, that era has nostalgia backing it. Back when they came out, there was a lot of controversy and hate for a few years..... And starting in Gen 3, EVERY GENERATION got hated for a few years.... and then, after a few generations, nostalgia pours in and the kids who grew up with those games become adults and bam, the games got love....
I remember being 14-19 (i was born 1993) during the Gen 4-Gen 5 era and even though i really like Gen 3, the DS era was where are my Pokemon obsession truly began. I played so many Wi-Fi battles, trading, completing the Pokedex and post game in this era. Sure this era wasn't perfect like every other era, (mainly because of diamond and pearl) but, i'll never forget the amazing experience i had with the DS Pokemon games.

Gens 3, 4, and 5 all felt interconnected and had every region available It was like one big journey. Now Pokémon takes that away from us and gives us very controlled and contained experiences by removing content and Pokémon and selling it back to us as DLC Pokémon is a pseudo live service game now
The new games are great but I still bust out my DS and play Gen 4 and 5 now and again. They just haven’t captured the charm and quality in the newer switch games 😢
This. Last few years I've been taking my DS with me whenever I'm on vacation. Especially the gen 5 games are still really fun to play and a great way to kill time when not driving.
I think the ds era was the best for pokemon and games in general because playing 3ds games and generations of consoles after will eventually loose game features over time when companies shut their servers down. So you won't be able to play the game at its full potential. Its pretty bad when you can play a gamecube game in the year 2024 but you can't play a wii u game because of servers.

I remember playing daimond on the airport flying to family for christmas and meeting other kids with a nintendo with pokemon too and we could play together for some time. Was a good time
I'd argue the DS era was the last era of good region design for Pokemon as well, with it starting its decline in Gen 5. Unova still had some of the metroidvania-esque exploration that HMs offered when it came to reaching optional areas or dungeons later, to find unique pokemon, items or trainers you couldn't elsewhere. However, it didn't have nearly as much in the puzzle realm, like the Strength or Ice sliding puzzles in Gen 4. Black and White 2 are still good games anyway and still offer a lot to do, it was just the start of things getting really linear with the route design, and some of the depth being stripped out mechanically. Once Pokemon went fully 3D and stripped out the HMs, it was a permanent hit to the level design, and it hasn't ever recovered. Every area being a bland and simple hallway that you have no reason to return to after the first time is what the level design looks like now, with no optional dungeons and puzzles.
Very true. The metroidvania aspect and ocasional Environmental puzzle made exploring so fun. i'm a sucker for puzzles in adventure games, and the 3d games from the 3DS forward have none of that.
Absolutely it was the best on the DS, and it peaked in the 5th gen. The care and attention to detail peaked, as did the artistic direction. Beautiful. Gen 2 and 3 have the most nostalgic connection to me and were with me throughout the largest part of my childhood, so I don't consider B&W reaching the zenith as being a result of the rose-coloured-nostalgia-go-goggles.

Im so happy that the DS pokeom era was my childhood. I got Pokemon Platinum and the DS to my first day of school. I loved everything about this game. It also feels like gen 4, 5, and partialy gen 6, where the last gens that the pkm company actively cared about the games. They added so much quality of life changes and really good pokemon. After x and y all that just vanished and the goal was to be as child friendly as possible. I hope that when black and white become a remake they actually care this time!
Short answer: Yes. (As a bonus you could even use the DS and DS Lites GBA ports to play Gen 3, and use Gen 3 games to have interactive Pokemon catching in Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum)
I played Ruby when I was young and helped my sister to play Sapphire. Then I finished Emerald... Those were the best time! Now I'm 30 and I started with Soul Silver and I love it a lot cause of the nostalgia. I ll be going with Platinum and BW2 next... Cant bring myself playing the newer games
Not even just the games, Pokemon in general hit its PRIME with the DS era. Toys, games, and the TCG were all absolutely phenomenal. The TCG is still really solid, but the toys and games pale in comparison to the DS era. XY and ORAS was alright, mostly carried by megas and I actually loved the story in XY. But SM/USUM is when it started really trending downhill
Gen 4 was my last gen and I still stick with it today. Black and White might still be good games but I think they were getting out of ideas for new Pokémon by that time already. I was born in 1997 and still started with gen 1 and went chronologically through them. Was the best experience I had and I'd say gen 2 or the remake even is the best Pokémon I've ever played. It was just great that you could go back to Kanto region and get 16 badges. I played Platinum in 2007 but Heartgold just a few days ago. Great games. I also played them on original hardware but due to the speed I could never do that nowadays. I just can't imagine how I didn't even mind when I was a kid.
In my opinion, Black 2 & White 2 is an near perfect Pokemon game. Everything from it's QOL improvements from the previous games, to the well crafted worlds, characters and other gameplay, an great roster dex, the postgame at it's best, the music, etc. The story isn't on the same level as the first Black & White game. But it's not an big deal for me since I prefer gameplay over story anyway and I think the plot is fine enough. Even to this day, no games comes close of being as perfect as B2&W2 were.
Not to forget all the great Spin-Offs we got on the DS to assist the main Games. Mystery Dungeon Explorers of T/D/S, Ranger 1-3 etc. We still had a 3D Battle Simulator in Battle Revolution… Great times. :) Nothing from this time is left.. I would pay a shit ton of money for a remake or a HD Switch Port of Colloseum or XD. :D
I remember buying a used copy of platinum at GameStop for $47 because I never got to experience sinnoh when it came out and thinking “damn this is really expensive”
Yeah definitley. And I should say, I'm not one of those people that hates gen 8 or gen 9. I actually do like gen 8 and LOVE gen 9 despite its problems. But when you ask the question, was the DS the best era of Pokémon then absolutely. Sinnoh, Johto, Kanto and Unova! The sprite and pixel graphics really were peak during the here. Yeah, DS era was the best hands down. I also really like 7th gen Sun/Moon/UltraSun/UltraMoon but was never super crazy on gen 6 as a whole.
A lot of people say 3rd gen was the peak, and I agree with that. Especially, we had solid side games such as Colosseum/XD people are still talking about today. Kids who started with gen 4 + 5 are going back playing Colosseum/XD and enjoying them. FR/LG is still the definitive way to play the Gen 1 and Emerald is the definitive Hoenn region game. Yes over ORAS!!! Plus, competitively, it was somewhat balanced due to the lower power level. Kids who started with 4+5 gen is the last group of people who got into Pokémon who likely still play today. And a lot of the big PokeTubers are around the age/started playing on gen 4. Wolfe being the oldest, or at least look around my age. I started back on gen 1, and even I admit that RYB is only playable if you're feeling nostalgic. Gen 1 aged like milk. The only flaw with Gen 3 is the physical/special split which came with Gen 4.
People will always be biased towards what they grew up playing. My first console was the GBA and I grew up playing LG & Sapphire & later Emerald (Gen 1 & 3), so I totally agree with you that Gen 3 was peak Pokemon. Because of that I don't like Gen 2 as much, because even though I had Crystal, the graphics of the GBA games just looked a lot better. IMO I wasn't a fan of the direction Gen 4 took the graphics and started making everything look 3d, and that everything had to have an idle animation.
for me it was always gen 1-3 cuz i player my first pkmn game when i was 5 (2000) on colour then i got emerald when i was 10 and it was game changer for me.
Started playing Pokemon games and I was able to play the first 5 generation and I can say that B2/W2 was the game I had the most fun, second would be Emerald then Platinum . HGSS was such a dissapointment though considering how good its reputation is.
I would like to say that all the Pokemon games from Gen's 1 - 4 would have been meh games without the enhanced versions. This is especially true for Diamond and Pearl as without Platinum, the horribly mismanaged dex is atrocious to play with. Also, almost all of Pokemon X and Y's problems would have been solved with Pokemon Z being released, and I would compare this to Diamond and Pearl. Heart Gold and Soul Silver also forgot to fix the weird level curve (this was the second chance as Crystal exists). Which kinda confuses me as I would not see a reason to not fix it.
Pokemon could genuinely easily be the biggest game ever again right now if they made an open world survival game similar to pal world game style. with fornite pov. Make all regions. Add all pokémon. And release it on all platforms as in Playstation, Xbox, Pc, Nintendo. Game would be #1 game for as long as gta if done correctly. they could add new pokemon through updates etc and run the online like a gta server . where u can battle friends and go on journeys, compete in tournaments, all in 1 through an open world. 99% that would never happen but potential 🌍
They should ditch the 3d and bring back the gen 5 sprites / graphics , they should make it an option to customize the difficulty and amount of random Pokemon etc like a rom after u beat the game , like a playground mode for the story atlesst have national dex from beginning
75% paralyses speed drop and 50% confusion self infliction Gems meta is something I’m glad is not part of the games anymore I feel like black and white was a great game but as a competitive game It started a standard from that onward with adding, buffs, nerfs, and changes
The DS era is my least favorite. I loved Gen 1, 2, and 3 on the Game Boy, the games were fun and engaging, not too complex, great music. The DS era was when they started getting more ambitious, with questionable results. The weird mix of 2D/3D, the fact everything was super slow, they were really pushing up against the limits of the hardware. The 3DS is where they were able to finally realize some of those ambitious with proper 3D models, real 3D worlds, etc, as well as remove the weird stuff that didn't end up working in the DS era.
they started off horribly with diamond and pearl with those games just being too slow and lack of a pokedex, but after that it was straight banger after banger. Platinum easily the best pokemon game of all time, Hgss is arguably one of the best pokemon games of all time, Black and White though hated at first became universally loved by all, and Black n White 2 are also arguably the best games of all time. We havent had a murderous row of good pokemon games in a while. It’s always been good one year then a bad year and it repeats. Also i feel like after gen 5 they should of sprinkled new pokemon into a new region and i like that they give different forms and what not but having to learn another 150 pokemon every 2 years is miserable
bc older ppl were pissed about not having their pikachu on the game lol, they disliked the fact you could only play new pokemons, also the design of the new pokemons were mixed for some ppl
The way I saw the DS era was this: gen 4 was the COMPLETION of the Classic era of Pokemon games. For 4 generations, you had a strong roster of Pokemon, regions, lore, and moments that ended with a bang thanks to the remakes of HGSS. Gen 5 is more of the soft reboot where it transitioned into the Modern era of Pokemon: more emphasis on characters and story. The battling ,music, and atmosphere was at a higher quality, and it was the start of what Pokemon was becoming...or at least we thought that was until we saw the 3D era of Pokemon.
@@StrawHatMidas I haven’t played since I was 11. I’m 32 now lol. Latest one was 2002 for me ruby and sapphire :/. Was going to get emerald or white 2 or platinum or hgss
@@adamrochester1 I would start with either HGSS or Black and White 1 personally. Black and white have a weird quirk where they only use pokemon from that region so it would be like starting with red and blue but on more modern hardware. HGSS are also good and have you consistently doing things throughout the game with little to no break. Emerald is really fun but it’s also a bit dated but it’s my personal favorite. I would start with either of the two though and build from there.
No. Sorry, not sorry. I’ll take the “n64 trees” of Pokemon on switch, over the cramped form factor and the HMs of the DS titles. Oh and despite the people’s complaints, Pokemon Let’s Go was a legitimately good title, with interesting catch mechanics that broke up the extremely monotonous gameplay of the Kanto region. I will agree that some newer evolutions of Kanto pokemon should have been in the game, as well abilities and breeding. But I’m fine with it, given that it’s meant to be “babies’ first pokemon”. It was the first game where I actually completed the dex. Pokémon Sw/Sh was also very good, if lacking in the story area, especially with the addition of the Crown Tundra. Scarlet/Violet had very good story, but was severely lacking in the technical department, including graphics. Ironically I think Pokemon Legends Arceus is really boring and bad and I hate that the next appearance of Mega Evolution is going to be in a freaking Legends game.
Iam sad i have some old pokemon games lying around , but the friends from back in the day i played with dissapeared. Whats the point of still playing without rivals.

@@StrawHatMidas Your videos were both fire in their own right. Would love to see a collab
That period between 2008-2012. HGSS, Platinum, BW & B2W2, PMD: Explorers of Sky. The franchise couldn't miss
Awesome vid bro. I also agreee DS generation was peak, Diamond and Pearl to Black and White were crazy hyped days
HGSS was my favourite.
GSC being my very first Pokémon games made me feel at home ❤️ playing the remakes
HGSS is such a good game, i have a video on it and i am playing through it now lol
Game boy advance, and DS generation for Pokemon was PEAK!!
Gen 5 had the best graphics
i agree. it’s funny how there was a time when everyone thought gen five graphics was dated especially the pokemon sprites.
I’m almost done paying off my sealed copy of Pokémon heart gold, pray for me 🙏🙏
Good quality video, thought a much bigger creator made this until I checked 😂 keep it up bro
Wow thanks! Maybe someday ill be a big creator, you never know :D
Not to forget all the great Spin-Offs we got on the DS to assist the main Games. Mystery Dungeon Explorers of T/D/S, Ranger 1-3 etc.
We still had a 3D Battle Simulator in Battle Revolution… Great times. :)
Nothing from this time is left.. I would pay a shit ton of money for a remake or a HD Switch Port of Colloseum or XD. :D
Great video, nostalgia is big here
I am 99.999% nostalgia
I remember buying a used copy of platinum at GameStop for $47 because I never got to experience sinnoh when it came out and thinking “damn this is really expensive”
Man this might be my favorite video on TH-cam, thank you
Wow, thanks! That is a big complement, I appreciate it so much :)
I could replay bw2 a very numerous amount of times and have just as much fun each time. Hard to say the same for the switch era.
No love for the spin offs? Mystery dungeon is goated 🥺
Gen 5 is my personal favorite. Bring back the PWT 🗿🍷
I love gen 5 so much :D
3ds is peak pokemon not ds, you can play gen 1,2,4,5,6,7, gen 3 remakes etc on 3ds.
And that’s why I remember my time in Sinnoh 10x better than my time in Kalos, right?
@@HunterAnsorge-ok9jk dp sucked
Sorry, Platinum, HgSs and the unova games are simply unrivaled and not one entry ever since even comes close
@@3dsfan2002dp sucks but then platinum came and became one of the best game of the series
Quantity does not equal quality. It’s a nice hot take, but I think you will find you are in the minority. I will say mega evolving is sick though
FRLG are gen 3 asset flips
for me it was always gen 1-3 cuz i player my first pkmn game when i was 5 (2000) on colour then i got emerald when i was 10 and it was game changer for me.
I loved every second of Pokemon on ds, especially platinum and its music!
it was a good run, especially since you could play the GBA games on the DS Lite too.
Black and white 2 is the only pokemon with a challeng mode
I’m so privileged to tell people that SoulSilver was my very first Pokémon game I owned 😊😊😊
That is a major flex :D
I stopped playing pokemon after Sapphire. I'll have to try these out.
I remember going to GameStop and getting my mystery gifts those days hit different
It was a great time
Started playing Pokemon games and I was able to play the first 5 generation and I can say that B2/W2 was the game I had the most fun, second would be Emerald then Platinum . HGSS was such a dissapointment though considering how good its reputation is.
GB,GBC,GBA & DS game Pokémon is the only Pokémon games that doesn't lag on my mobile phone emulator.
I bought one of those cartridges with 500 games for Ds and it has all 9 of the games.
I often forget they sell those lol that’s a good deal :D
@@StrawHatMidas yah dude 😁
Pokemon could genuinely easily be the biggest game ever again right now if they made an open world survival game similar to pal world game style. with fornite pov. Make all regions. Add all pokémon. And release it on all platforms as in Playstation, Xbox, Pc, Nintendo. Game would be #1 game for as long as gta if done correctly. they could add new pokemon through updates etc and run the online like a gta server . where u can battle friends and go on journeys, compete in tournaments, all in 1 through an open world. 99% that would never happen but potential 🌍
Objectively gens 4 and 5 are the best. However, nostalgia can’t be underestimated. Gens 1-3 just hit different
I first started on gameboy color with blue and crystal, then I got leaf green and emerald then I got diamond and heartgold for DS.
I remember watching japanese youtube videos bcz the game always launched there first
You were not alone lol, i did that with black and white 2 a lot lol
i wonder what % of the fan base would say the top 3 pokemon games are Platinum Emerald and HGSS in whatever order
I don’t care what anyone says, gen 5 games were the true first 3D Pokemon games
They should ditch the 3d and bring back the gen 5 sprites / graphics , they should make it an option to customize the difficulty and amount of random Pokemon etc like a rom after u beat the game , like a playground mode for the story atlesst have national dex from beginning
3 - 5 was peak pokemon. If your fav pokemon game is either 3, 4 or 5 then you are a true fan. All 3 are s tier gens
Is nobody going to comment how distracting these games' overworld graphics were when running on a Nintendo handheld?
A cynthia fight is also in gen 5
Why you stopped putting the date of realese in europe and australia?
75% paralyses speed drop and 50% confusion self infliction
Gems meta is something I’m glad is not part of the games anymore
I feel like black and white was a great game but as a competitive game
It started a standard from that onward with adding, buffs, nerfs, and changes
i give you like beacuse you are the first youtuber to ever greet my family at the end of the video
I hope that everyone who watches and their families have good days :) I want to spread positivity when I can :D
Infact gen 7, was the best looking 3ds pokemon game
they started off horribly with diamond and pearl with those games just being too slow and lack of a pokedex, but after that it was straight banger after banger.
Pokémon could not miss for years when they were in the middle of the DS era! It was just hit after hit and it was a generational running :)
"Now iam broke"😂
i bought pokemon black and now i am homeless (please help)
i think its ironic everyone seemed to love gen 5 but i remember when it was pretty new most people said it was the worst game yet
bc older ppl were pissed about not having their pikachu on the game lol, they disliked the fact you could only play new pokemons, also the design of the new pokemons were mixed for some ppl
The battling ,music, and atmosphere was at a higher quality, and it was the start of what Pokemon was becoming...or at least we thought that was until we saw the 3D era of Pokemon.
i sold my pokemon white uncased for 48€ and i regret to this day
I feel your pain, i rebought them at a PREMIUM :D
So which is the ultimate game ?
I have a video coming out tomorrow that will answer that :)
@@StrawHatMidas I haven’t played since I was 11. I’m 32 now lol. Latest one was 2002 for me ruby and sapphire :/. Was going to get emerald or white 2 or platinum or hgss
@@StrawHatMidas keen to see it
@@adamrochester1 I would start with either HGSS or Black and White 1 personally.
@@StrawHatMidas cool thanks g
Ironically I think Pokemon Legends Arceus is really boring and bad and I hate that the next appearance of Mega Evolution is going to be in a freaking Legends game.
i think the battle zone in emerald was the best in the postgame ever
Iam sad i have some old pokemon games lying around , but the friends from back in the day i played with dissapeared. Whats the point of still playing without rivals.
And here the picture is zoomed in too, what the hell man xD
I have only been doing this for a few months but I am working on the process :D sorry :c
The spin-offs were definitely best on DS
The answer is yes. Yes it was.
Idk if it’s cause I grew up or because Arfter ultra sun they stopped putting the games out on ds. For the reasons it all stopped for me but I really think it was because of the switch.
May be the best but its hard to comeback to them after all those QoL changes we have now
