Ironically, Rogue One had the best ‘’new’’ starship designs.
The U-Wing looks new, while also looking like it fits with the era.
And the Tie Striker reminded me a lot of the Tie Phantom, which is one of my favorite EU ships, and while they were used very little, they do look cool.
I do wish the sequels had done more with their designs.
Even in phantom menace, with the colorful and perfect ships, it has this, Star Wars feel, one that only George had the ability to feel and notice.
I hope they create new things moving on, and that they really take advantage of the huge mythos in the future.
Edit: I forgot to mention the planets, while the sequels have given us basically the same (snow planets, desert planets, forest planets) Rogue One gave us Jedha, that, while it is a desert, it’s way more rocky, and the city looks interesting and far different from tatooine, as well as Scarif of course, which is my favorite of the newest planets added.

In my opinion, Rogue One is the only new movie that perfectly captured that star wars essense that was present in the first 6 movies. Solo and TFA did it at times, and I did enjoy them but TLJ feels like it shouldn't even exist in all honesty.

@@tinobenfante7315 completely agreed. I went in to R1 with the mindset that it didn't need to be made. We didn't need to know exactly how they got the Death Star plans. I was fully prepared to not like it. But I came out very impressed. It told a good story, had amazing cinematography and decent acting. It fit in well with the OT and didn't try to change too much as far as canon, just added to it. And it had some really cool easter eggs. I realize that it sounds like I'm kinda sucking it off... I actually did have some gripes with it and I don't think it's perfect. The ending was fucking killer though, and the rest was inoffensive compared to the new main series entries. It's my favorite out of the Disney SW films by a large margin.

      @jokerzwild00 4 ปีที่แล้ว +24

@@S0HJIN For the same reason any director/producer/franchise creator gets casual credit for smaller things in their universes. Because ultimately the buck stops with George. Saying that all he did was "rubber stamp things" is reductive and tries to make it seem as if he had little to do with actually creating assets for the movies he produced and directed. Even if he didn't personally draw the concept art for every single ship , alien or building in Star Wars, he oversaw the people who did and out of the many things that were put in front of him he chose only the ones that fit his vision. Besides, how do you know which ships he put a lot of input into? Obviously there were some that he spent more personal time on, but he could very well have spent time with the artists who made any ship.

Princes Leia Solo-Organa was never a fleet officer. She was a member of the strategy board/command staff of the Rebel Alliance. Her profession, prior to the destruction of Alderaan, was Imperial Diplomat. No where in the OT was it even hinted at that she was trained in ship combat let alone ship command. Therefore, she shouldn't have been given her own fleet.

Yeah, a guerilla Imperial Remnant was basically everything that the EU did, wasn't it? The villains in hiding, like cockroaches, trying to rebuild the Empire, with the New Republic and New Jedi Order left to mop them up for the next few generations. Presumably... that's precisely the problem; the Empire becomes a terrorist organisation, and Disney isn't exactly comfortable with something like that, in light of everything in the real world. So, with no choice about skipping the time since ROTJ... they don't know how to pick up the story from there with anything other than the Big Bad succeeding in re-building the Empire. And then what happens? They lose to the good guys again. It's Disney, there isn't any other ending they'd go with but a "happily ever after"... because they don't know how to tell the "after" part.

It's something I was commenting on right after seeing TFA:
Clone Wars era: The Y-Wing is the hottest new light bomber available to the Republic Navy.
Original Series Era: Twenty years later, the Y-Wing is the only Clone Wars fighter still seeing widespread frontline service, and that because the Rebel Alliance doesn't have anything better in sufficient numbers to replace it. Tends to rely on newer X-Wings and A-Wings to protect it against increasingly more capable TIEs.
Sequel Era: Thirty years later, we have a more streamlined X-Wing! And the First Order has gone back to the hexagonal-winged TIEs despite that configuration being in the process of being replaced by TIE Interceptors and other dagger-winged designs at the time of RotJ!
'Twas a bit of a disappointment, to say the least. I'm not all that fond of the E-Wing personally (to me, visually it looks like a more primitive fighter than the X- and A- and feels like it's just "better" due to writer fiat: it'd probably look at home among the Clone Wars designs, not as something that's a generation beyond the X-wing and legends A-wing) but at least the Expanded Universe contributor who came up with it tried...

Tony Stark had a new Iron Man suit in nearly every appearance in the MCU. In earth terms, fighter jets get revamped to keep them in fighting shape but inevitably get replaced at some point. Ywings were old in the original trilogy, but would be ancient at this point in the sequel trilogy. And the Xwing is old enough that replacements should be if not in the testing phase, be in the planning stage.

The prequels had a really good idea for a movie - even though the execution wasn't great but they had character. A gigantic trade cooperation trying to succeed from an equally gigantic galactical republic in a clash instigated by the sith to regain control over the galaxy - all before the backdrop of two of the most beloved characters of the OT, Anakian Skywalker and Obi Wan Kenobi - thats what made the third so great and even the first one had its moments ( though its definitely the weakest out of the prequels ). And then the sequels basically scratch all of these ideas for what, a bit of drama that really just tried to force a message in the weirdest possible way? So much wasted potential. Hopefully, 9 ends up flashing us all.

They wrote themselves into a corner by making the setting deliberately lacking a drive to progress. The New Republic is a laid back passive society when it comes to the military so they would sensibly just update what they began with instead of particularly going for a new exciting design, whereas the First Order is a remnant of the Empire that longs for their glory days so even they would lean on the Nostalgia factor to give themselves some "legitimacy". They are not factions written to be innovative.
A missed opportunity is the Resistance using New Republic hand me downs, where they could have been more creative and used designs from fleets of member worlds like say, Mandalore or Corellia. One could imagine that in the lore, with the members of the New Republic having to fend for themselves given that the galactic government is saying they should just defend themselves, ship designs would vary wildly because all the separate cultures and races would make ships that fit their needs.

    • @sethb3090
      @sethb3090 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Honestly though, even a relatively passive New Republic should be getting new ship (or at least starfighter) designs. One of the biggest changes strategically from our world to the Star Wars galaxy is the way unit costs work. In our world, developing a new fighter is a hugely expensive endeavor, made worse by the fact that there could very well be less than a thousand (or less than 100, or even less than that) ever built. However, when you scale things to a galactic government, a few things change.
First is the sheer scale of things. Let's be conservative and assume that there are only 1000 planets of note. Each of these 1000 planets has, say, twice the resources of a current Earth superpower. That's 2000x the resources available, or in other words, the relative cost to the society to develop a new starfighter is 2000x less. It's still a lot for the company designing it, yes, but it's not like a new starfighter is going to balloon the NR's military budget.
Second, having a full galaxy means that as long as your starfighter is good, it's going to get purchased enough to make the design worthwhile-you can probably count on selling between 2,000 to 10,000 (if the government buys it, maybe even up to a million or more). An advanced design is generally going to be worth the initial investment of developing it, and reliably building more than 2,000 starfighters of a design means unit costs for the program will be far lower than the current average on our world.
Also note the "if the government buys it." Unlike our world, Star Wars companies aren't necessarily dependent on government contracts for things smaller than capital ships. Private owners buy starships all the time, and most planetary governments want some kind of local defense fleet independent of the galactic government, ESPECIALLY when the galactic government doesn't seem to be putting much priority on defense. 50 planets buying 100 of your starfighter each puts you at 5,000 sold, and again, that's probably a conservative estimate.
Sorry to toss a novel out here, I just got thinking.

@@WwZa7 Well its a yes and no thing.Y-wings or more like tactical bombers used on specific targets or work better on moving targets. They aren't heavily armoured but enough to get to were they need to however that being said its not enough to with stand tie fighter laser cannons. But having a defensive turret does help to. Y wings are good for precision and close ground support roles. Y wings are like fighter bombers aka P47 thunderbolts from WW2. allowing for a versatile plat form. Also the fortress bombers again are good concept and work well against static targets like that orbiting Mandator dreadnought.
However they lack sufficient fighter escort and suffered heavy losses due to defending enemy fighters. However I would use these Bombers Planet side to saturate enemy defenses and production infrastructure while having a lot of fighter escorts. Honestly it was pure luck and the incompetence of the Dreadnought crew to defend themselves sufficiently from enemy attack. As all the bombers were destroyed and it was costly risk and even mistake by commander Dameron according to General Leia.
So neither design is shit what makes them shit is poor implementation of such assests. Yes Y wings are more vulnerable do to less armour.
However they need less fighter escorts freeing up other x wings to go engage the enemy fighters directly on their terms.
Well the Y -wing is faster and more agile than the fortress bombers so they can evade enemy fire easier. However not the same level of dog fighting that X wings can do but enough to frustrate any would be tailing bogies and could use that to their advantage. On a return run or Sortie run as the Y -wing pilots can bait the enemy fighters into an X wing ambush. Either destroying the enemy fighter or force them to dogfight themselves or retreat.
The best the Fortress Bombers could do is move lazily to the right or left or do a slow U turn not much options. However they can rely on there sturdy armour and numerous defensive laser cannons. Along with a large fighter escort would make for tough targets to bring down with layered defenses from other bombers screening each other to x wings dog fighting enemy fighters.
Also more bombs makes it easier for destroying large or armoured and some times both that are stationary will provide effective means of destroying the enemies means to wag war against you.
personally I prefer Y-wings for ant- capital ship roles as they can target specific hard points that could cripple an enemy capital ship once disabled or destroyed in combat.
Where as Fortress Bombers I would use to saturate the enemies industrial ability.
Lol I don't mean to sound like I am lecturing you I am sure you know this stuff. But people hate on star wars ships because they have only seen some implemented in combat incorrectly not allowing for such ships to utilize their strengths properly. Lol and enough of my ranting . But this mainly to others who may not know about these details. So I agree that the Fortress Bomber is a cool and effective ship in its own right. But the Y- wing isn't shit or at least when used as intended lol.

I’m more disappointed with where the story has gone, the ships not changing along with the plot from the OT certainly doesn’t help my enjoyment. It just makes the lack of creativity all the more pronounced.
Also on what Eck said about the factions. The Resistance shouldn’t exist. The FO should have been presented as a technologically advanced insurgency. The NR didn’t care about them at first because “oh they’re just a small imperial remnant, they don’t matter.” Then the FO starts winning even though they’re heavily outnumbered. This would have served to make the FO much more intimidating, then if something like idk, discovering a massive, hidden, fleet of modified ISDs happened it would be a definite “bad feeling about this” moment because now the numerically inferior force that was already winning just gained a massive numeric boost. The only reason the Resistance exists is because the writers were too afraid of breaking the mold and wanted to just repeat the OT. The sad reality is that this disappointment is what we’re stuck with, and like a disease it will taint the rest of canon forever.

    • @batman6621
      @batman6621 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Valaglar Propaganda Company exactly my point. The NR is essentially the rebel alliance, created to destroy the empire. But when they win, they don’t do anything about the same empire becoming stronger and stronger. Like whut. As you put it the only reason why the resistance and the new republics flawed backstory exists is because the writers didn’t want to risk trying anything new. The resistance exists because of bad plot design.
It’s sad because I’ve seen so many comments that give ideas and they are so much better than what is being produced.
I’d love to see a brand new new republic trooper design that almost resembles modern day armies. Imagine seeing them go head to head with insurgent stormtroopers. Instead of yes let’s destroy basically death star 3. I’m curious to see what happens in episode 9 but idk I’m not expecting much tbh maybe we’ll have star killer base 2

Moreover, it would have been fascinating, at least in my opinion, to see what the factions could have done with recombining components of old ships into new designs. It takes place 30 years after the original trilogy and we have the same kinds of ships we did then and no real change in story, making everything the rebellion fought for seem pointless. The clone wars were 20 years prior and we see massive progression in ship designs and the how galactic power shifted from the republic to the empire, but this is all lacking in the sequels. The rebel ships were supposed to be what they could throw together to fight the galactic superpower. Why are the main characters in the same rut here if they won the Galactic civil war?
TLDR: the sequels feel cheap and like they ignore everything the prior movies laid out for the story.

When you consider that TIEs were supposed to be analogues of Zero fighters, and produced by one of the more technologically advanced factions, they should probably be depicted as fairly decent in-setting. I'd imagine that the average enemy for a TIE is actually using a much more primitive fighter (which was originally the case for the Zero), and that the Rebellion was often getting it's fighters via regional governments. Among other things, this helps explain the design: the huge wings are radiators, so that it can have speed + firepower. The lack of shields is presumably because they use armor, both for cost reasons, and to provide less competition for heat radiation than shields require.

I think you’ve hit on some of my major complaints/gripes about the ST, which I nonetheless generally enjoyed, especially in regards to the ship designs, which is huge part of what I enjoyed and sparked my imagination in the OT. I was at least happy to see them bring some of my favorite ships like B-Wings back for TROS. I suppose that, story wise, you could chalk it up to the Resistance just not having much in terms of military resources and would have to stick with the basics and more widely available craft but I also agree about the idea of having it be a New Republic vs First Order fight but I think that they announced pretty definitively in TFA that they wanted to re-create the “Rebels vs Empire” dynamic by seemingly blowing up the “New Republic”- even though the idea of destroying a galaxy-wide government by taking out a couple of planets seems like a bit of a stretch when it seems like there would be enough people elsewhere to re-constitute a government but, given how fast galactic events occur in TFA/TLJ/TROS I guess there’s not much time to focus on that and I’m sure they wanted to stay far away from politics after ROTS.

If I had to condense it down to just one point, it would be that the conflict we see in the sequels doesn't look like what I'd expect in the aftermath of the galactic civil war. The new factions we're introduced to feel badly out of place, as if the ongoing story was intruded upon by complete strangers. And I agree with Eck that with the exception of the resurgence class, pretty much all of the craft that we see either look like their designs haven't advanced at all, or even regressed. Whatever universe the sequel trilogy takes place in, it isn't Star Wars.

Also where is the world building? Alien races (I'll explain this one in a bit), new unique looking planets and cultures?
We get a forest planet with one location (Maz's Castle) with Takodana in Force Awakens.
A planet that based on descriptions was rich with culture, the city planet that Starkiller Base destroyed in TFA.
Another forest planet in Ajan Kloss with only one location (Resistance Base) in Rise of Skywalker which looks way to similar to Takodana.
Luke's hideout with only an island seen in TFA and TLJ, which is fine, it's a hideout meant to be an homage to Yoda and Dagobah.
An entire planet shown at night so the vistas aren't visible except for the Casino and it's lights in TLJ
A cool looking planet with Crait but only an old Rebel base is seen and some crystal caves.
I get why the OT couldn't exactly do a whole lot of other species and unique planets with huge cities. The prequel trilogy really expanded the lore, planets, races and cultures.
We got Naboo, Kamino, Geonosis, Mustafar, Coruscant, Utapau, Kashyyyk, the planets seen in order 66. They all looked different and unique from each other.
The sequel trilogy barely did anything new except some new aliens that are just in the background and barely given presence unlike the Gungans, Geonosians and Ewoks and in terms of planets they did a few planets that looks the same to each other or to pre-existing planets, Ajan Kloss and Takodana both have a forest biome with no unique features like say a literal white colored ocean, something cool to make them stand out. Jakku and Tatooine, two planets with a desert biome and literally nothing new done with Jakku, which begs the question as to why didn't they just create a new unique looking planet instead? They could've done more new unique looking planets like Crait which was actually pretty cool in design but lacked world building and lore for it and they should've shown more actual world building, hell if they were that inept at doing it, they could've just revisited old planets like Coruscant or Naboo. Those planets would've made sense to show up again bc wouldn't the First Order be a big presence there?
Rogue One had some actual world building in it. Jeddah which made me curious when I saw the fallen Jedi statue, Scarif which was a new biome not seen previously and instantly memorable.

It looks like somebody tried to make a tennis-ball sandwich and literally only looks good in flight if seen directly from the front or back. • @MCLegoboy

I've felt the same way. I'm a big LEGO Star Wars fan, and while I don't have anymore room, I still find a way to buy sets and the ones I want most are the ones that aren't remakes and aren't completely gray. The Prequel and Clone Wars sets are amazing, there's so many different colors and so many different types of ships. I have really just about every different vehicle, but when we get to the Sequels, yeah, they may be different colors like the TIE Fighter being inverted and having a stripe, and Poe's X-Wing is black and orange, and that's cool, but they are still just a TIE Fighter and X-Wing. The only things that really made them interesting to me was that I hadn't built a recent version of those ships in a long time, so it was enjoyable, but still, where are the other types of ships? If it weren't for the prices I might have gotten the Resistance Bomber, or the Ski Speeder, but then what do I have go against them? Expensive versions of a Star Destroyer and an AT-AT, which I already have.
The AT-M6 is interesting, but it's not enough. Especially with the First Order, a lot of things seem to be, "It's bigger, which makes it better," when to me I think, "Yeah, but it's also not as cool because it's not different enough." I feel like their Star Destroyers are actually a bit underwhelming because the bridge region isn't as bold as the Imperial Star Destroyer or a Republic Ventator. To me, the ships look like they had their heads chopped off. Doug Chiang's direction from George for the prequels was that Star Wars design was not making it look like the stuff that came before with the Original Trilogy, what makes Star Wars look like Star Wars is making something bold. Make it bold enough to stand out, but simple enough to understand. Having said that, I do think the AT-M6 looks cool, but I like the look of the Crawler that had all the legs as kind of an evolution of the AT-ST even more, but it was cut from the movie, so I'm not going to get that set if it's not in the movie. The crawler made sense to me because it's not as unstable as an AT-ST because of all the legs, and it was a new design, something totally new, and then it wasn't in the movie. And then to make matters worse, there is an AT-ST in The Last Jedi, so it's just more of the same. Back to big triangles for a second, I do like the Dreadnought, that's a different enough design for me, and then the Supremecy, that's great looking ship in my opinion. It has a familiarity with it being the big command ship like a Super Star Destoyer, but it's wide instead of long. It still falls a bit into the First Order's "Bigger means better" mentality, but it has a nice strong and bold presence in my opinion.
When it comes to TIE Fighters, I mean, I think any change in wing design is enough to warrant calling it a new ship, I'm actually really okay with the new TIE Fighters with those triangular wings, but I do want to see them in action first to see how much it's actually used. I like the design of the TIE Striker from Rogue One, but we hardly ever see it in the movie, and since we had seen regular TIE Fighters in atmosphere in The Force Awakens and in Rebels, it seemed kind of moot that the Striker was designed specifically for atmospheric combat when standard TIEs seem to handle it just fine. Even though we only see Interceptors briefly in Return of the Jedi, I know what they are going for; it's a specialized ship because they have the same wing angles as Darth Vader's TIE Advanced and the TIE Bomber, but the wings are more dagger shaped, which makes me think they're more dangerous, and in universe, they are. It's a great design and I understood it as a kid, so it passes the bold yet simple test. I was eying Kylo Ren's TIE Silencer, it's very sleek and I really like it, but that price is what killed me for the LEGO Set. We don't see it anywhere in the new trailers, so it's disappointing to see it go. I'm guessing he's just stealing some random TIE Interceptor?
Now when it comes to the Resistance side of things, we are really just retreading old ground. It's not that I don't love X-Wings, and I got excited when I saw that A-Wing show up in The Last Jedi, but it's just not enough. Where are ships that look different or at least are further extensions of what has come before? When I first saw the Bombers, I actually thought of the B-Wing because they have a tall design with some side wings on them, but they are still vastly different, and it's great to see them, too bad they just aren't very effective. Half the size and you could have a nice heavy starfighter of some kind though, and I would believe it as being some kind of evolution of the B-Wing but not actually being one. Seeing that B-Wings and Y-Wings are going to be in The Rise of Skywalker is disappointing to me. Looking at the LEGO Set for the Y-Wing, it looks even spindlier than the ones used by the Rebellion. I mean, are they still using those same ships all the way from The Clone Wars?! And if they're not, why does it look so spindly? If you absolutely want to use Y-Wings, then make them look like they could actually survive a simple leisurely flight, let alone a dogfight. What's incredible though is that there have been competitions in the LEGO Community that ask to see what the other letters of the alphabet would look like as fighters, and some of the entries are great! Pick a letter than looks good, and make it a starfighter. You can still have it be a handmedown from the New Republic to the Resistance, but just make something new instead of a slightly modified version of something that came before.
