    That old and long-abolished form of slavery discussed at 2:43 is often distinguished with the term "chattel slavery," meaning that people were considered personal property (chattel) and could be bought and sold.

    I don't disagree with your points but I think you might have missed mine, however.
    When your money (backed by precious metal currency) is replaced by fiat currency (borrowed *at interest* from private banks [the Federal Reserve Bank is a private corporation and no more Federal than Federal Express]), the currency becomes a note of debt. When you make a purchase with a note of debt, you are simply moving debt around, not paying it.
    It's 3rd grade math: -1 + -1 = -2.

    I read that the price of a slave is now at an all time low, 90USD according to one source. I believe historically the cost averages out to the modern equivalent of around 40,000USD. It seems that, far from being a thing of the past, slavery has become even more cost effective.

    I think there are two main theories on the origin of that name
    1) the word slovo, which meant 'word' (at least it does in Russian now), or
    2) the word slava, which meant 'glory' (at least it does in Russian now).
    i.e. the Slavs thought of themselves either as the glorious people, or the people with words (everybody else being unintellible of course).

    Incidentally, the value of a gallon of gas is and always will be about the same amount of value as is in a 10 cents silver dime. The value of money is a (practically) flat line. The value of fiat currency is based on what banks SAY it's worth.
    $20 spent in 1960 required $20.95 to buy the same amount of items in 1964 (the last year we had anything resembling Constitutional currency). That same $20 would now require $155.59.
    I'm the one who is silly, huh?

    We are talking about two different things: treasury owned precious metals and Federal Reserve Note currency.
    We have been making precious metals coins in the US since 1986 with a face value from $1 to $50. However, they MUST be purchased from the mint with FRN's at a rate which is higher than the spot (market) price of the metals. Using a 1 ozT silver coin as $1 or a 1ozT gold coin as a $50 currency unit is illegal... and unprofitable to the buyer.
    FRN's aren't backed at all since 1971.

    Here's the thing.... wage slaves are not really slaves. It's hyperbole. It's as equally valid as me saying I'm a slave to the Earth because I need to breathe, and can't just get up and leave whenever I want.

    I believe what most people think about when you say slavery is called Portuguese Slavery.

  • @thwolf1969
    @thwolf1969 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Slavery defined: "People who are forced to work for no pay and cannot walk away."
    The US dollar was made a true fiat (Latin for "from nothing" or 'not backed by precious metal') currency in 1971 after the silver had been gradually removed from circulation starting in 1965. If the currency with which people are paid has **no actual value** and we are **forced** to use it (under threat of imprisonment), then I would contend that EVERY American citizen is, by international definition, a "slave".

    Where exactly is this village in India where people are forced to work in a stone quarry for no pay? If they are forced to work because of extreme poverty, but not physically restrained from leaving, would it still be slavery? I am not denying extreme poverty and attendant exploitation in parts of India, but India has a powerful independent media, and a story about a village in slavery (forced to work for no pay, restrained from leaving) would make headlines for sure, yet I've never heard of it.

    We are all slaves in one way or another. It is up to us to change our own thought process and recognize that fact. We in America started it with the Emancipation Proclamation but little or nothing has been done since and we have fallen into a political/mundane type of slavery today.

    How many headlines do you see about the 50 thousand slaves estimated to live in the U.S.? Also, poverty is a restraint from leaving. Without food and transportation, without shoes or even a road how far can you go? What if there is no other village within sight and they've never seen a map, let alone know how to read one, or know how to read at all. With no access to phones or a computer, not that a slave would know how to use one, how then would they contact a media agency?

    Federal Reserve Notes (aka USD or FRN's) only have value because that store is required by law to accept them. Why is it that several states have passed legislation which alows its citizens to pay their taxes on gold or silver INSTEAD of FRN's? If FRN's actually have value, why do you have to pay about 30 of them for a silver US dollar (one which complies with Art. 1, Sec 10 of the Constitution)? Shouldn't a "US dollar" be... $1?
    Your *money* has been stolen and replaced with *currency*.

  • @stardude692001
    @stardude692001 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    sure very few people on the internet are in a type of slavery, but you can be a virtual slave while still being "free" and getting paid.
    Take for example "company" towns in Virginia 80 years ago, they worked all day and got paid but they didn't make any money, they went deeper and deeper in debt to the company no matter how hard or how much they worked and if they left the debt was legal and would follow them anywhere they went.
    And no one is free, we are all bound by the social contract.

  • @MultiBaynes
    @MultiBaynes 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Well it makes sense that we Americans would see the word slavery as only African-American slavery and not like to use it, because many people are still very upset over this, and I agree with them. Its similar to how in the US we would say "skits", which to us is the plural of a play, but I've heard to many people in England it would mean diarrhea, which it is never used in that way here.

    I guess you haven't seen the DHS/ICE check points which have claimed (outside of law) the power to conduct search and seizure operations 100 miles inside the borders of the USA.
    My original point, however, was that there is no legal way to conduct business within the borders of the USA without using the fiat currency. When you face imprisonment instead of using their worthless currency, you can't walk away without going to prison. Use worthless currency or go to prison = can't walk away.

    Thanks for your thoughtful reply. I wonder if we can get others interested. You are right about slavery to the mind, but I think it is only harmful when it is to the part of the mind that is emotional. what she said about not being able to get away from the situation is most important. Some jobs make you a slave to the boss.
    One can be a slave to the emotion of "See a Flaw Pass a Law." where good intentions are thought to prevent unforeseen negative consequences.

  • @thwolf1969
    @thwolf1969 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Ah, I see the disconnect. You think that the Federal Treasury and the Federal Reserve Bank are synonymous. They are not. "The Fed" is part of the treasury. The Federal Reserve central bank is a private bank. Look at its seal: across the bottom it says, "Inc.May.18.1914". You can't incorporate a branch of the government. A private bank has been issuing the currency of the USA for 100 years.
    By removing our gold standard, Nixon gave us a completely fiat currency.

  • @Melthornal

    There are types of slavery. The type of slavery used in the US and in most of Europe is called Portuguese slavery. It is a method for how slaves are treated and transfered. There are many other types of slavery. How does this not make sense?

  • @GrimrDirge
    @GrimrDirge 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Well Jamon, it just so happens that I don't. Education, arbitration, and infrastructure, in spite of what you have likely been taught to believe, can actually be provided without the coercive social construct that we call "government".
    You will of course rail against such an idea, which is to be expected of anyone who was forced into a state enforced inculcation center for at least 12 years.
    Reference Hans Hoppe, State or Private Law Society, if you have the inclination to learn.

    I bet it's hard to define a hard and fast definition of what slavery is or isn't. The Ottoman Empire was infamous for its slavery (in the west especially for the white slavery and the harem slaves), yet it seems to have a very different form than the rural slave labour being used in the Americas. In Europe serfdom was practically slavery as well, even if the serfs were allowed some property. And today a lot are "wage slaves" without any reasonable chance of finding another job should they desire

    surprised this video didn't mention the origin of the word "slave" refers to people from slavic countries -- originally "Slav" (see Slav), so called because of the many Slavs sold into slavery by conquering peoples. europeans commonly enslaved slavs before international trade allowed them to purchase slaves from african warlords that had conquered other african tribes.

    Not a very deep discussion.
    The most important aspect of slavery was missed. Clearly she is a liberal. The most important aspect of slavery is that it is a culture where most of those in that culture feel that they are not slaves. Notice they are not chained. Harriet Tubman only rescued 80 people but she is famous for stating that she could have saved thousands if they only knew they were slaves.
    Why this is important is because "WE" are slaves to the state.

    i think you could also call slave to some salary men. In countries like el salvador or any other country with a corrupt government and that is dominated by foreign economic powers, people are enlaved for cents that are just enough to buy food and pay the rent, they live in misery and are forced to continue working agaisnt their will because if they quit, the next work will be the same, and if they dont work they'll starve to death. That's what happening in europe and central america now

    You can certainly TRY to make everything yourself, but there are at least 3 major problems with that: you need time, you need skill/knowledge, and you need tools. Between these, you'll end up in a position where life is well and truly miserable. So it's much more efficient to pick one thing you're good at, and trade with other ppl who are good at other things.
    I don't understand why you think the above process = slavery.

  • @laharl2k

    That does make sense but from the average joe's point of view, that changes nothing. For those who do understand it, it means that they are making money out of thin air, like money counterfeiters, which mean they aren't any less than that. The problem still lays in that people are just too stupidified to realize that.
    But still gold is just gold scarce or nt, the problem is, how do you make sure noone makes money without working for it. so that it has a real value? my idea is no money at all.

    Spelling and punctuation are the clothes your ideas wear; if they show up looking like homeless bums, don't be surprised if people get awkward around them, treat them superficially at best, dismiss them without consideration at worst. Is it fair? No, it's not. Is it justified? Yes, it is. Spelling, punctuation and grammar are things 5-year-olds manage to master; if you as an adult, can't, then the likelihood of you saying something worth listening to is extremely low.
