I agree with a lot of the points. Honestly, I think the marketing for this show really did it dirty because while it has a bunch of themes running around, including eating disorders with Patty, I found it to be more so about addiction-in terms of Patty, anyway. Hence _Insatiable._ It's my guilty pleasure, and I've never regretted spending the time to watch it. Sure it could've been better handled than it was, but it was still fun.

i wasn’t sure if i would when the video started, but i SO agree with you. i think the show had a lot more potential than people give it credit for, but that the writers weren’t confident enough to make it good. it’s less offensive than it seemed in some ways and moreso in others, and overall, is a fascinatingly mixed bag.

    • @47jjak
      @47jjak 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

I think the problem was they tried to act like this show was a thoughtful well planned out show with deep meaning behind every scene. So people judge it like they were watching game of thrones or something and called it trash when it didn't turn out to be this politically woke show they can have discussion with their friends about. but if they had marketed it as a show that you turn your brain off for and was goofy with hidden meaning but wasn't suppose to be taken too seriously then people probably would have been fine with it.

@@47jjak definitely agree, it was honestly sort of similar to Pretty Little Liars in that sense. The writers emphasized so much that everything was intentional and that you had to pay attention to it because everything had meaning, but people that watched it and paid attention to every little detail noticed a lot of things that didn't make sense. Then the reveals were kind of decided on later and we didn't get the full pay off they promised. I think with shows like this you have to market it in a way that people are not going to expect more than they get. Unless they are spending hours and hours carefully curating every scene, it just lets people down when it's not what they promised.

Personally I think her attraction to Christian made more sense than her attraction to Brick. I felt like the show was depicting Patty as like a budding psychopath so although Brick was a guy she had lusted over for so long she would quickly lose interest in him because hes just a normal dude and Patty craves chaos on repeat so it made more sense to me for her to go for the guy that is dark and mysterious and wants to run away with her. I loved the relationship between her and bob exactly because they were equally as toxic and they brought out the absolute worst and best in each other, they put each other in the most chaotic situations but at the end of the day there was so much unconditional love in the bond that those two crazies formed n im here for it

its incredibly annoying when people say that her obsession with food is like a negative fat stereotype but it was never because she was fat. It's binge eating disorder, something i struggled with, something that can become very very dark. Like the "childlike attachment to the candy bar" the critic called fatphobic. It's not a fat people thing. It's a B.E.D. thing.
I really loved the scene where she poured soap on a basket of baked goods to prove she wasnt going to eat it, only to later eat the soapy snacks, because it's really good representation of how dark this ED can become. It was just so nice to see my own experiences represented.

  • @jackshaganash540

The show is so much better when you look at Patty as a villain and I think the show is so unique for this reason. I think the best thing about this show is that its main character isnt a good person she's chaotic and mean but funny and this is a really good mix to keep a show entertaining because we can root for the bad guy. When we see things from Patty's point of view and we understand her thought process for some of the absurd things that she does it can make sense to us but it doesn't mean that what she did was okay. The writers make it so we want to forgive Patty but she makes it almost impossible and I think that's so realistic to what having someone that manipulative in your life is like. They are constantly lashing out or hurting the people around them and even though they know they should walk away those that care about them are completely entangled in their web. I love this show as a dark comedy about a pageant queen/serial killer.

People said this show wasn't sensitive enough because they are OVERLY sensitive like do the audience need the producers to send someone to each viewers personal house to personally hold their hand when they view?
This is like a soap opera let's be real....its meant to be extreme and dramatic...just like a soap opera. The satire was hilarious. And they very rarely if at all actually made you laugh AT people in the show if anything they had characters make fun of people and put that in negative light. They had you laughing with people not at them. They honestly were very sensitive when approaching this stuff for the type of comedy it is.....like I mean look at south park. Some things are meant to just be not serious, bring up difficult topics in an even way and I applaud that and wish that wouldn't die out due to cancel police.
I think the character made sense all through out. And her love interests made sense to me. And Christian lead to foreshadowing and revealing her deeper/darker side and showed how badly she wanted connection and revenge and how that can get confused. I thought it was brilliant!
People say patty didn't have character development and needed more redeeming qualities.....she developed she just developed NEGATIVELY....she had less and less redeeming factors because she was changing into a worse person. This is story of her decline...not her rise. She was a VILLIAN not meant to be likeable....her being selfish and self focused is how a LOT of people really are.....so why not show a character like that?? She came to realizations she UNDERSTOOD she was terrible and a murder......but she LIKED IT. And people didn't like that conclusion. But I thought it was an awesome twist of her realizing she truly is just bad but instead of trying to be better she gave into her darkness....and that's ART.. And that's what makes it genius and beautiful! I disagree with alot of what you dislike. I thought so much wasn't meant to be taken serious, and I felt like there was never a "will they won't they" with patty and Bob but just a weird obsessive crush and Bob pushing her off, the "conscious un-throple-ing is one of the best scenes." I loved they brought up the 3somes and how Bob ended up being on the back burner. I thought it was all perfect and just ughhhhhh SUCH A GOOD SHOW

The reason wasn’t people being OVERLY sensitive, it was bc there were MANY problematic moments that people just couldn’t look past. I mean Christ, I’m trans and there was a transphobic joke within the first minute lol 😂 I literally paused it and sat there thinking, do I really want to keep watching this shit.
But I’m glad I did bc it was a really enjoyable show to watch. The soap opera style was brilliant and left me so excited to watch the next episode. Pacing was incredible. The show being overt with themes and stories were great, really set it apart. If you just take out those problematic moments that were completely unnecessary then you have a really really interesting show. But unlike me, most people didn’t get past the trailer or first few episodes, and who can blame them. I can’t believe I did keep watching tbh lol 😂 the trailer was deliberately done to seem like getting thin makes you’re life better and now she can get revenge to set up to show to reveal something else. Which, I get you want to surprise your audience, but you’re deliberately making it seem like you’re promoting that and then shocked when people are outraged about it.
Overall with a better writer just checking over the scripts for BS and a better PR team, this could’ve been an incredible show.

I feel the same. There was a lot of potential. It feels confused. It often acts as a satire, then sometimes as a comedy, then a thriller/drama. Yes it could be all of those but it somehow felt jarring...
I think it was good they introduced Patty's impulses related to her eating disorder. By the end of the series they started to talk about her emotional issues & I found that fascinating. But they sort of glossed over it. Then they seemed to scramble for the finale and it's a shame they couldn't do a more in detail lead up to her final revelation about killing.
I might be the only one but I think they should have focussed less on the pageant coach & more on Patty's issues. I feel like most of his storyline was just...goofy and I think they could have kept the satire & comedy without doing goofy...

I honestly loved the fact that a key theme to this show was binge eating disorder, which has way less representation in the media. There are some things I thought they did really well and some that I wish they hadn't done, but the representation is good and accurate for the most part. I feel like often in media and just in society, other ED's like anorexia are portrayed almost as the "prettier" disorder, with much less blame on the person with an ED. Whereas binge eating disorder is mainly portrayed in jokes and in a really negative light reflecting the person struggling with it. We need to get rid of the notion that one disorder is favorable over another, or that one makes you sicker than the other, which I feel Insatiable did a wonderful job at doing.

everyone shits on the weight loss aspect of this, but i binged this ENTIRE show because… when I lost weight, life got easier. It made me realize how MEAN people were to me when I was fat. Which then caused it’s own issues, but I feel like no one talks about that? I never thought I was bullied, but when I became conventionally attractive, people opened up to me easily, respected me without me needing to earn it, held doors for me and made eye contact with me. It isn’t a good feeling when you discover that the world you knew before secretly HATED you just for existing while fat. The show isn’t flawless, but this part of it was relatable for me because I understand her rage following weight loss.

  • @horrorvictim

I remember seeing the binge scene with her cake and initially thinking, "oh come on grabbing the cake like that? Isn't that a little too..." but then I stopped myself, because literally a few weeks before watching that episode I remembered that I had a breakdown and was grabbing a rice dish and stuffing it into my face exactly just like that. I had anorexia growing up and those feelings or impulses don't always completely go away. You almost want to hurt yourself, you want to feel something else than the overwhelming hurt.
I definitely understand where some of the criticism comes from but when this show hits, it hits hard.
I don't particularly like the "ending" but tbh if they had another season they probably would have flip flopped on it let's be honest 🤷🏽‍♂️

Her treatment also how it changed when she was fat and when she was skinny and how when she was skinny the focus changed, suddenly it was all about hot she was which for me represents society. This show had a lot of potential and I wish they would have been confident in giving this show a chance and stuck to their guts but listened to the critique and making it better.

The shows not for everyone .. If u don't enjoy dark / unusual humor ur not gonna like it.. Most ppl have a very basic sense of humor thats y rom com's r a big thing.. I used to watch rom com's for the comedy and I don't find anything funny throughout.. I wld recommend Borat, the dictator, the interview, scream Queens , not another teen movie, scary movie franchise.. If u r into dark comedy..

thank you for your analysis, I wondered why I didn’t see the show coming back. personally, I really liked it. I was watching it in the middle of my own ED recovery and there were days when I couldn’t watch it, because it infuriated me so much. it was too real. other days I enjoyed it and laughed at how ridiculous it was. my point is that having watched most Ed related shows this was the most truest and to the point. when you have binge eating disorder it’s not like ana, it’s about anger, resentment, rage even, self-righteousness, egoism, vanity and self-hatred, because you yourself don’t meet those standards in your head. this is exactly how you feel and they portrayed it in Patty brilliantly. also I loved when she learned what her disorder was and that realisation touched me, I’ve never seen that on tv before. I had similar experience, the relieve to know there were others like me. what I’d like to see in the end is the resolution, the answer to her problems. she joined 12 steps, but honestly, writers don’t know anything about the program, I was upset seeing it misrepresented. I recovered because I did the work it required, I’d love to see that in a tv character some day. not the one who is still struggling, going to the meetings every now and then and still blaming it on others, but the one who took full responsibility for their life, did the work and fully recovered. that would’ve been amazing.

I LOVE all the points you hit on this show and couldn’t agree more! I was a little hesitant on what stance you might take because I secretly enjoyed it quite a lot, despite the problems it had.
I think the show was really captivating and very fun. It had me laughing at many points and rooting for certain people (especially the Bobs being together, hate that they split up, my head canon says they got back together).
Also I couldn’t agree more with the whole “take my new body for a spin” thing and why it’s wrong. I’m a thick guy (in the LGBTQIA+ community where there’s unfortunately a LOT of fat-shaming and expectation to be fit, muscular or thin) and while I do face rejection like anyone else, there are LOTS of people who really like me just as I am. There are LOTS of fish in the sea and they all want different things, people can find someone if they put themselves out there, it’s all about attitude and not letting the rude people and rejections get you down.

I also loved the show and connected a lot. Dark, dry, uncaanny humor is definitely my thing and you can tell it's made by a person with trauma tbh. The advertising was it's biggest issue! I didn't watch until S2 was announced and was like "why'd no one tell me there was murder in this show???"
also punching over the candy bar is a very normal reaction from anyone with an ED on top of the emotional shit she'd just gone through! Even anoretics, we value the food we have. Some have secret stashes of candies and sweets they "can't" eat and interfering with a safe or cheat food, whether they were gonna eat it or not, can cause irrational anger responses.

Hi, plus size girl here! I absolutely love the show, don't get me wrong it's not perfect but nothing is. I think it does a good job of showing that losing weight won't fix your problems. To me it was pretty clear from early on that Patty is the villain of the show, yes she's the main character but I don't think we really are meant to root for her. I like the dark humor and the satire and I think a lot of people just don't like that humor or took the show too serious. Others just saw the trailer and ran with it without giving the show a chance. The amount of people I've seen hate on the show without actually having watched it is ridiculous. I watched both seasons twice and while the second season is definitely worse than the first one, I like them both but I also absolutely adore Debby Ryan so... maybe that plays into it.

Like a mirror of the crazy consequences we would face if we would always made the wrong, selfish and impulsive choices. It was always super funny and Debby Rayn performance proved to everyone that she is an amazing actress. I just enjoyed watching It and when I did, It felt like I could just be a part of that world where dark and good choices have equally bad or good consequenses...if that makes sense. My favorite thing about this show is that none of the characters are really good people they are all flawed from one extent to another and they bounce back and fourth really well. I liked how in Patty and Nonnie's friendship they were both self absorbed in different ways, Patty only thinks about herself and her own feelings so shes frequently bulldozing over her friend, Nonnie is always following patty like a dog with a bone but never stands up to her and has a preconstructed image of patty in her head that often blinds her to the point that Patty could commit murder right under her nose. I was really excited to see where they're friendship would end up because I felt like they were going in the direction of nonnie uncovering and exposing Patty's crime spree. Maybe she could expose Regina as well which would exonerate bob and then Patty and Bob wouldve gone on the run together. Bobs kit and kaboodle for disguises c'mon why'd this show get cancelled)))))))))))))):

insatiable is one of my favorite shows and I’ll probably never get over the fact that it got cancelled when it was actually pretty popular :‘)
i would have liked to know how it would have gone on, because Patty obviously wasn’t healed at the end when she realized she ’likes’ killing since it didn’t really make sense because she already had an ED before she became a killer, imo she was probably more addicted to ’justice’? Lauren Gussis herself said that the show would end when Patty gets healed and I guess a big step towards that would have been her finally taking accountability for some of the things she did. I don’t think the ending is that bad and the cliffhanger of S1 would have been way worse as a finale, I was still rlly frustrated when it got cancelled tho obviously. But who knows, maybe it’s gonna get saved some day or there will be some kind of reboot (even tho it’s probably unlikeable but I won’t give up hope lol)

The show was great. I am sad for its cancellation, but I am twice as sad that modern society is getting so dumb it cannot apply the simplest logic - learn from bad examples. This is ancient trope and nowadays you cannot get a story right unless it is downgraded to basic level of correctness. Stuff should presented in clear BLEAK and white , otherwise it gets cancelled. Since when humans lost their critical, analytical take on entertainment? Removing everything that challenges you to think and analyze won't remove all these ''bad'' stuff from the real world

  • @writerwannabe8778
    @writerwannabe8778 ปีที่แล้ว +1

FINALLY someone who shares my thoughts and isn't so harshly critical of this show. People really dismiss the good parts of the show. I found there to be more good parts than bad, at least in season 1. I really hated the direction the writers went into in season 2, but I didn't understand why people weren't talking about the internal conflict which is the most important part of a show and the writers (and cast and crew) of this show really got the audience to be invested in the characters. I personally experienced Patty to be annoyingly selfish or self involved and she was extremely impulsive when she felt abandoned, but I felt like that was part of her character and sometimes she had a reason for it (not to justify it completely) and as you were saying, some parts people called problematic and made out to be really bad parts weren't (that) bad, while there were some bad parts, but they were different than the ones everyone talks and got so hung up about.
I really love the show and really hated what they did to Patty's character development. It felt like it wasn't the right fit for the story they were telling. I felt like they just randomly threw out the previous direction her character arc was going in and decided to make her a killer, enjoy killing and give her a bad character arc (and a really bad one, out of sudden.) So I do agree that a lot of twists and turns in season 2 were ridiculous, annoying, bad and didn't make sense. But what so many people ignore and don't seem to get is characters are flawed, but a lot of those flaws are part of their character arc and actually those flaws made me love these characters, because they are realisticly portrayed because they are people with these flaws who have to go on a journey first to learn their falsely beliefs and flaws to become better, less selfish, people pleaser (or rather Patty pleaser) or better people not focused on the wrong things (Coralee that cares too much about her reputation for example).
I'm glad I found this video, because I was thinking ''why does nobody understand that those parts they call ''problematic'' are intentional,'' and I was starting to question myself for a bit. But hearing you say the same thing, I know that I wasn't the only one who got the dark humour. I mean, I'm autistic and even I aren't so quick to call things insensitive, eventhough I'm a really specific critical person, especially of shows and series. I'm picky and when it comes to stories, as a writer myself, I want good quality and as someone who thinks way too much about ethics, I am quick to see and adress a problem. So yeah I've learned that people don't get dark humour and want to call it problematic, because these days were all very sensitive and are quick to call things insensitive which results in sometimes or a lot of times people who judge a book by its cover, calling the wrong things insensitive and people don't get that flawed characters are intentional. But let me adress this: the point of characters is giving them flaws and setting them on a journey. When a character has a bad character arc they don't change and it's intentional, because the writers are telling a story through this character and them not changing is intentional to send out a message and tell a certain story.

I watched this show with my at-the-time girlfriend when it came out on Netflix in 2018. I think there were two seasons, then, though I'm not sure. I'm always interested to hear your thoughts, especially because your opinions are very well thought-out; you include the context, the framing, the writing, and even the clothing choices into your analyses of scenes, and I deeply appreciate your thoroughness. It seems like you always have something insightful to add on a topic. No matter how many videos I've watched on this exact show, for example- and I do remember watching a lot around the time I finished what was on Netflix- your videos always offer something unique. In fact, I especially enjoy how much nuance you present, since most people had a very blanket, black-and-white opinion (that it was awful, generally).
It's been a good few years since I've watched it, but I thought I might talk about the opinions that have stayed with me as they relate to your video. I was a child who was bullied for my weight, both by school children and my own parents. Your opinion on how the show presented this is absolutely fair, regardless of whether or not you experienced that exact thing. I'm a writer, and to develop my writing skills, I learned to ask myself this question: "How would I describe (x) to someone who has never observed it before?" - and that applies to scenarios and plot and themes as much as specific objects. I agree with you that "Insatiable" doesn't do much to explain Patty's long-term struggle with bullying, it doesn't give us a good "before" picture to use as a lens to analyze her behavior through, yet there are a lot of shenanigans that...at least, I got the idea we were supposed to understand or excuse presumably because she "used to be bullied." However, I can say that there may be some catharsis to watching the victim of bullying go out and get revenge; revenge fantasies can be a morbid sort of comfort to a person who has no real power over a situation. It may seem counter-intuitive, but these fantasies are normal and even healthy- to a point. They're almost a way to vent, a way to create a scenario in which you have control over a situation you realistically do not. I can't honestly remember if I found a lot to relate to her on this, though I think her "revenge" motif was always kind of flimsy and clumsily portrayed (like, she seemed to be getting revenge on a lot of people who didn't seem to do anything to her in thw first place), and I think they ended up going just a little too far with the "dark comedy" aspect of the show. It muddied the tone so much that it became hard to relate to the characters because, at the moments their trauma should have been the forefront of a scene, they focused too much on trying to make it funny and not enough on trying to get us feel her pain. Trying to portray dark comedy in a plot like this would take a level of genius to tread the line exactly right, and in many people's viewing experience, they didn't succeed. I also have a lot of respect for the fact that they tried.
Unfortunately, I felt like the show-runners picked the worst stereotypes about stigmatized people and identities, and then made all of those traits the characters' entire identity.
Patty may no longer be "plus sized," but she still has all the worst qualities we assume about fat people as a society. She's selfish and impulsive, and lacks self-control. And while I appreciate that this show tried to take a different turn with it, because I know this issue with representation needs more stories where weight loss isn't the cure all, the problems they gave her were very stereotyped. I also wasn't a big fan of them bringing up the diagnosis of BPD in the way they did. BPD is already a highly stigmatized disorder, so if you're going to include it in a story, you really need to take the time to humanize that character and make the audience relate to their struggles, and the way they brought it up as if it was the real reason and this is just how we can expect a Borderline to be didn't do anything for the many people struggling to accept their diagnosis and/or get help. That might just be one person's opinion. While I'm on the topic though, I want to point out that BPD is a treatable condition for those who have access to treatment, and nowadays it actually has a very good prognosis. It is a chronic, lifelong condition that is often connected to trauma, and it cannot be cured, but people with BPD are not destined to be toxic relationship partners or abusive or anything.
Beauty pageant Bob is bisexual, and he can't choose. Bob Barnard is actually a very interesting character because his sexual orientation doesn't fit into a neat label; he's sexually attracted to men and women, but as he says, he's "gay, emotionally." I took that to be his way of explaining that he's homo-romantic. Bisexual and homo-romantic. I also really loved the throuple scene, although it was also horrible representation of poly people because it was started as an affair (if I remember correctly). Then, there's Lily, who takes on the role of "predatory lesbian" and constantly seems to be making immature and uncomfortable comments at Patty- so much, in fact, that I didn't find it believable that Lily was even questioning her sexuality. It seemed like she was super sure of what she was going for.

    Glee- Rachel berry

One tree hill- Lucus and Dan

And maybe exploring how being abandoned by her family may have affected her and possibly caused a personality disorder, but her fall from being a sympathetic Character to being the villain of her own show was really interesting and i did love their depiction of binge eating disorder because i almost never see it talked about. Most people hear eating disorder and picture gorgeous women tragically kneeling over a toilet or starving themseves and never really go into what it actually is and how it affects you especially with BED and it was just so good to see it and them really taking it seriously while not feeling the need to be serious all the time.

Insatiable was bold, deciding to be as problematic as it was in a, sometimes, quite delicate american society, and I believe that boldness should be respected.

as a person who was bullied over the weight problems, i kinda feel related to Patty and when you are being excluded some crazy thoughts really come into your mind (a lot of bullied people become bullies themselves). and ED problems are so realistic in this show also. so it not as bad as it may seems. but the show, like most comedies do, really exaggerate the reality

I would have loved to see a third season. The characters were extremely flawed but I loved that the show explored that, even if it made missteps. I haven't seen a show that explored the kind of rage you can experience when you're overweight and when you're bullied. Not everyone's experience is the same, but it captured something quite emotionally acute, and I wanted to see where it ended up in the third season.

I have rewatched Insatiable so many times, it is by far the most hilarious show I have ever watched.

I really liked this show. It is meant to be campy. The subject matter when delivered with the campy style is more entertaining to watch. Camp is absurdly exaggerated, and I enjoyed this aspect of the show. I wish it had a season 3. Also, thank you for making a great video about this show. Even if I don't 100% agree with you, I like how you make your point and your video is very well thought out. I'm gonna hit that subscribe button and give you a like. Stay safe and well.
