- Go check out Tom's video on the Rocket Restorations channel telling the rest of the story on this car! • Road Trip! We Get A 19...
If there's one thing we like around here, it's an early A body - but this is starting to get ridiculous. Like the suitcase full of elicit substances at the beginning of Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas, our collection of these cars is getting a little out of hand. Look forward the upcoming inaugural meeting of our Early A-Bodies Anonymous (EABA) support group. In the meantime, let's see if we can get this poor old Valiant to live again, and if I end up being jealous of Tom for his quality purchase. - ยานยนต์และพาหนะ
Man Jamie had the hate flowing when he filmed this 😂
No further comment 😅
Being a military brat, my sister, brother and myself had the honers of making 3 round trips across the states
from VA to CA and 1 to Alaska in a 65 Valiant. It never broke down once. My mother was the driver. That was
a little scary. It was still running great when it was finally replaced in 1974. Regards from Ody Slim
I bought a 66 Valient 4 door for $300 back in 76 for a winter beater to save my new Camaro from the salt in Pennsylvania. I drove it for 3 winters slant 6 3 on the tree. Never changed the oil just kept adding. Could not kill that engine. Sold it for 500 and new owner was happy. Built tuff back then
I’m a B body girl but lovin the little A bodies you’ve been getting in ❤
This one definitely has seen some stuff in its life and a lot of dust. Most impressive was the fact it was running on 3 or 4 cylinders. Crazy slant six stuff!
Cool little car! Im mostly amazed that that original radio has survived!👍
From one musician (or a person that has some instruments and retired from playing live )to another, I love this channel and your way of doing all the things. I’m a Chevy guy but have always loved ALL the Mopars.
My 66 Caprice thanks you for your knowledge and teaching methods!
Thank you! I very much appreciate that. And I’m happy to help. Haha.
Had a 66 when i was 18 was a great car it always started too. Was only 42 years ago lol
Just discovered your page, great stuff!! I also have a '64 Valiant ragtop, but the Canadian inbred version with the Dart rear end. My 225 came with the Carter 1695 carb, but idles just like the 1920! Oh well!
Liking the 64 Valiants. Have one myself, since 1980. It's a keeper.
Always keeping me going!! Thanks brother!!!
HELL YEAH!! BROTHER!!! MADE MY DAY ✌🏻 CAN'T GET OUT TO MY OWN PROJECT!!! ILLINOIS 🤬 THIS CHANNEL ROCKS 🤘🏻🎵🎶🎵🎶🎵🎸🪕🎹 THANK YOU ✌🏻🎸
One of my friends had one of these in the late 60's. His was kind of a gold/beige color with white top. This one looks worth fixing up.
The steering wheel coming off on your hands was pure GOLD!🤣
😅
Wow! My high School car. Mine was red on red, hard top. I worked two years to buy it. It was a good dependable car. The engine, the "slant six" had one of the longest production runs, of any engine ( 1959-2000, 41 years). The Valiant was marketed around the world. Super easy to work on. But you didn't have to, it didn't break. In Australia, A souped up slant six was available! It produced a lot more horse power (302).
Yep you could get an Ausie Valiant 265cu! It Was available Only in Australia by about 1970ish. It was a version of the slant six. I think my 1964,was 170cu. If memory serves I think the Aussies raced them.
The 265 is an unrelated engine, the Hemi Six. They aren’t slanted, and as far as I know share no parts. They’re amazing engines though.
My first thought when I saw those bent push rods was "how in the hell can that thing run at all?", but then I remembered, it's a slant six! You can injure and severly wound them, but killing them is very close to impossible.
I’ve heard so many stories like that too. I never tried to run the slant I sent a rod through after the fact. I wish I had, I have regrets now.
A Slant 6 starting right away? You don’t say! :)
My favorite year of Valiant! Love those things. Are you sure you did a video on a ‘66? My memory is fuzzy.
I really do like the grill and taillights on that car.
I was counting my Barracuda. Haha. No ‘66 Valiant, yet, but there was a ‘66 Dart too.
Where I live, if you condemn every 63-66 Valiant around here with bondo in the lower rear quarters, you’re condemning every 63-66 Valiant you’re gonna find! At least you can get the patch panels! A few decades ago, you couldn’t!
The slant six shaman works his magic once more!
I had a slant 6 bend pushrods like that. Ended up being bad fuel residue in the gas tank dissolved and went into the fuel system and caused "sugar in the gas tank" syndrome. Had to pull the head & have it hot tanked & reassembled. Also had a radiator shop hot tank the gas tank. All good after that!
This is what we suspected, but all of the valves moved freely.
Those fuel tanks are so cheap online I recommend everyone purchase one don’t mess with a rusty old fuel tank. Super easy to install. Rebuild carb and off you go. 👍
Yep!
Love the slant, can't kill em with a brick. My '66 wagon had a single rail 4 speed, handy having a gear between 3 and 4. Like the revs on a hemi 6 tho. Ever had 1?
Wanted a signet hard top, any year, before getting a '62 'S' sedan, very cool daily driver. Never see Signets in Oz.
Are there many pre '63 signet h/t's left?
🖖
I’ve never even seen a ‘60-62 Valiant… so I don’t think there are many of those left in general. I really like the ‘63 Signet hard top we’ve got, it’s sweet. We didn’t get the Hemi 6 here, so we have to beg you guys in Oz to send them up here to us. I hope to get one eventually.
What can I say? Tom loves a numbers matching Mopar. Barrett Jackson, let's go! 😊
😅
16:48 - cleaning the cylinders with steam I presume?
Bingo!
👍Entertaining if nothing else
Another convertible.... good content and thanks
"It's a slant 4, that's super rare" 😅
Hahaha, a 2-4-6
Oxy/Acet torches have a tip cleaner you can get and they work great for tiny holes like jets to be cleaned.
I have some!
More power wagon! Lol. You should do a station wagon sometime
Station wagon is coming up soon I hope! I am looking everywhere for a ‘66 or ‘67 Coronet/Charger front bumper. I’ve got basically everything else I need.
Thx Jamie!
Kinda curious what the extra red light under the pushbutton shifter goes to.
Always surprises me how much mechanical mayhem a slant 6 can suffer and still run.
Nevada Dust err Dirt- they were lighting off nukes above ground until '63 (darn it, none of Dyson's Project Orion) might want to sweep the car with a Geiger Counter...
The good news is, judging by the rust, it hasn’t been in Nevada all its life. Haha.
I had the same car in white. Signet 200. Red gut, black top. Sold it for cheap. My first car but I don't miss it.
Mighty valiant of you 🤟
I would love to have that car❤
I probably have a very unpopular opinion! That’s the best engine design ever.
I think they’re really great in many ways - but it would be hard for me to call them the best because of the head design, and my various fun experiences with them. Haha.
So on a lighter "Note", that noise the radio was making is called "MotorBoating" and is common old AM radios with bad capacitors and sometimes is made Much worse by bad plug wires. It can be fixed! We definitely want to see that head pulled off. Did it drop a valve and then chew it to pieces? Did someone drop a slippery screw or nut down the intake? Jamie will show us!
Actually, it was just bent pushrods - but we have no idea why. The smoke is still worrying, but it has gone down significantly. I will plan to do a follow up when possible.
@@ericruud9328 Well, just like old guitar amps (and stereos) the old caps will NEED to be Replaced at some point in their long life. AM radio in particular picks up and amplifies that frequency. It's super annoying! lol
Looks like fun.
I can't believe the snow treatment didn't help it ????🤣
It knocked some crap loose! But only in the three cylinders that had working intake valves 🤣
The old ice water wake up
OK....I have never seen anyone drop snow down a carburetor....wtf was that all about? Keep up the good work....I think.
Have you ever seen someone dribble water down a carb? I’ve done it myself a good few times. Anyway, snow turns into water pretty quickly inside a warm engine. Haha.
Another early A body convertible ?
*gasp* 🤯
Well.... you are getting very proficient with them .
Might as well , keep going
A least the metal is in good shape
I think the dust , preserved it
I actually don't mind ,
The original 225 slant six 🏆
Oooooo ..... commando air cleaner
Hahahahaha !!!!!
Your sarcasm came through ,
Loud & clear..... LMAO 🤣
Jesus Chrysler !!
That engine ran ,
Even with , pretzel push rods !!
Oh man, do I love that starter sound!
Well..... I fired vehicles that had been sitting for years the same way you moved through this old girl - until I couldn't anymore. Years are more like decades now and long sitting vehicles don't like my old routine anymore. New routine: I just bite the bullet and patiently move through this list, yes it takes a couple hours but you catch everything before it gets $$$ ugly.
Pull the spark plugs, valve cover(s) and rocker arms before ever turning the engine.
Oil and check every valve until smooth unsticky movement.
Drain the oil then refill by flooding all camshaft openings front to back.
Prime the engine oil w/ drill if possible turning the engine by hand as you prime.
Do the above again with the rockers reinstalled -reinstall valve covers.
Never fu%$ with the old carburetors, just grab a known good one from the stash or take 1/2 hour and quick disassemble and clean the original.
Oh I forgot: yes I do marvel mystery oil in the cylinders first thing, why(?) - it will help seal the cylinders and get the cranking compression up for 1st fire.
Yup, there can be mechanical issues of all sort found along the way or discovered once shes running but you did everything you could to prevent hurting something $$ that could turn out to be a good runner long term :)
Keep Undeading the Dodges!!
I’ve just almost never had the kind of problems that warranty any of that. I did have an engine that was very seized once, and the valve cover was loose because they’d tried starting it 18 years earlier and bent every pushrod due to all of the rockers being rusted solid. That car was actually in a shop for 40 years - but it wasn’t heated, and had a dirt floor. Meanwhile, a slant parked next to the ocean for 20 years fires right up with zero problems. You’ll know pretty quickly when the engine turns over by hand if any of that messing about with valve stuff is necessary. These slants don’t have a balancer bolt, so it’s straight to the starter. And if there is a major problem, the likelihood is that it was preexisting. Case in point, this car. I really don’t feel bad not wasting my time on a $100 slant six.
Great video the radio needs a new flux capacitorAnother great car not to be confused with that modern junk
crazy slant 6 any other engine with rods like that never even started
Wow, you guys get something other than rain there? Learn something new everyday!
Occasionally 😅
My Mom had a '63 when I was born, but it wasn't a convertible, and it had a three-on-the-tree and zero options.
I’d actually prefer that. I did a video on a ‘63 Signet hard top that Tom bought a while back, which I have since claimed for myself. It’s a sweet car. I think I’ve decided ‘63 was the best year for these - with the only downside of course being the lack of a V8 option.
Yay , A-bodies. Ozzies luv em. Well no choice really.
When you turned the radio on....LUL
Are carbs vital ?
That was Woody Woodpecker on the radio
You guys should build a hot rod slant 6 for it !
I’m building for a ‘63 Dart GT soon!
I recommend a 340
Hate when they smoke and stay out late.
Intakes? Didn't hear it popping through carb. Duh,because they weren't opening said to myself. Amazed you got bolts out with gun and didn't drop one. I would have dropped all.😅
I truly don’t know how that worked. Haha.
Here's gas vapor in your eye. lol
Jamie brother hood you are right she needs nelp classic Val with a wee bit of loving she will look like a million dollars
So basically, even if someone completely convoludes the rocker assembly and valves with mixed up parts. A slant six will still start and run? :-)
Apparently 😅
I have a 1920 on both slants i have. One works okay, the sucks. Ive never liked this carb, because they dump fuel on the most convenient places on the engine.
It’s like Holley set out to create exciting fuel leakage with all of their designs. I don’t get it. Haha.
The Red light on dash is shift light lol
😅
That sir, is not "dust". It is generally known as "dirt" to all perhaps excepting,
Pac NW'ers....
I’m well familiar with dirt. We’ve got plenty of it, but it’s more often found slightly damp.
putting snow down the carb that how you clean it
Water down the throat and some revs is a classic method for blasting out carbon deposits. Show turns into water pretty quickly in a warm engine. Haha.
Is it just bad plugs leads / maybe valves not seating . Fully choked up exhaust 😲I’ll say it again iv never had a problem with those carbs always ran well 👍🏻.mmm bent push rods 😵💫😲.
Funny enough, after the pushrods were fixed (which I wasn’t there for,) it actually sounded like it fired up and ran great.
Weakest slant 6 vs strongest ford 300
Yeah im going to go with a slant all day. That reminds me i should say hello to the neighbors with a angry open headers slant
That corolla runs better than this valiant :D
It’s probably faster too 😅
Some vitriale was spent on this little jewel.
Well I had some extra. I feel better now. Haha.
Hey! It is a car. I know it’s a car because I seen one before.
😮🤯
Brings back memories from when I had a car.
I'm here bro. The 2nd like (don't want to be TOO early ya know. lol
Open the doors Hal
I started to say that in a clip too, but something else happened and it didn’t make the cut. Haha.
Lot’s of smoke lol Greta will be pissed at you if she see that video lmho . All 6 bangers are cool my opinion, as long as they’re running all six lol
I won’t tell if you don’t 🤫
That's a lot of snow for your area isn't it??
Olympia is kind of a different climate from home. Sometimes winter happens there. Haha.
@@DeadDodgeGarage Got it. Lol
Thats a lot of bent intake push rods and i wonder why. Must be them 7grand neutral drops to get it 3ft lol dont just love 1920s what a great idea they were. I here they work good if your fishing as a sinker so they do have a purpose😂. I asked tom why oh why. But he brought me home buckets for the coronet so i will shut the hell up. I am also loosing my parking spot so my trunk gasket best get done. Personaly i think my car deserves the car port and this needs to be pressure washed by god lol. Pull the floor plugs and let it get clean. I bet it smells dandy 😂
225😮 didn't they come out later? I was thinking it would be a 170 or 198😎 correct me if im wrong😎
The 198 is the one that came later (1970.) The 225 also came in ‘60, but it was used in full size cars and pickups. It became available in the valiant in late ‘61 models, but the 170 was standard.
😎
Mopar A Bodies Forever!!!
I had a couple bent push rods on my slant 6 too. They like to do that !
Interesting! It was a first for me.
Why did the radio sound like a night after Taco Bell?
🤢🤮
@@DeadDodgeGarage hahahah
👍🏻🇦🇺
put a hemi in it
Noooooooooo
Figured we would see something after Toms video popped up earlier..... he beat you this time..... was that planned.
My genius plan was for them to go live at the same time, but I didn’t start editing until his was posted 😅 that’s the way it goes.
Jamie scooped me on pretty much my last 4 videos got him this morning!
Does he need some Nice rear spears for it ? I have them.
I don’t think he does, but you can always email him at tom@rocketresto.com
@DeadDodgeGarage Jamie, I am sure you have seen the dark red 64 Valiant convertible with the 360 Magnum and Torque Thrusts in several Mopar Magazines. That car is Sweet.
Why do you have to live 5000 miles away? We could have been ABAVN's i just created.
A-Body And Valiant Neighbors!
I’m 5,000 miles from everything…
2 stroke 225 😂
😅
It was a Valiant effort. Ugh!!!!
Uhhhh huh… haha
I need my 1978 ramcharger worked on, but I don’t think I can take the verbal abuse :(
these vids are moving from Jedi to Sith quickly….
Naaaahhhh. It ain’t like that.
@@DeadDodgeGarage kiddin man, love the show - u give me a time for the shop and I’ll take the 1920 off :)
I just came down off my roof from doing something that I have never done before. More on that in a future episode. Well anyway, so far no one has yelled at you for calling it a freeze plug. I'll keep checking the comments, and I can yell at you as a last resort to keep the balance of good versus evil intact. If anyone wants to guess what I was doing on the roof, feel free to do so now.
Adjusting the aerial? Contacting aliens? Photographing a lunar eclipse? Let me know if I’m close.
Way wrong Jamie. I have done all three of those activities. Naked barking at the moon is wrong too... However, I have thought about doing that!@@DeadDodgeGarage
