It would be comical if Meshuggah were shown some of Yogevs hard efforts and they were blown away because they too, had no idea their music was so complex.
thats probably not far off from the truth lol theyve stated that they dont ever focus on math or time signatures when composing music, they just make shit that sounds cool. making it work as "proper" rhythms is literally an afterthought for them 😭

I think Meshuggah should be an academic discipline by now. I love these videos!
They were a central part of one course on Berklee and one conservatory in Sweden also analyzed them if I am not mistaken. Very fucking cool and I hope more jump on that train in the future and with other important bands as these madlads!

I find this song extra cool because it really illustrates the relationship between polyrythm and polymeter (ie subdivisions) due to the relatively slow tempo; if you tap your foot on the '1' of the 4/4 and clap on the '1' of the riffs, you're playing a wholenote 16:17 polyrythm!

Meshuggah's magic is that their music is somehow both incredibly complex when you break it down but you can still headbang and groove to it.
@@facemash Well let's see if I've watched enough of Yogev's vids to explain: the host is always 4/4 (of the vids I've watched). So no matter how crazy it all gets, you can always find the steady 1 2 3 4 somewhere in the drums, which is what we bang to :)
What’s really wild is that they’ve all said in interviews they just write the song however they feel it, and don’t delve into the theory and deliberately plan time signatures.
They are creative geniuses. This video was made by an analytical genius. If you look at the comment section you will see that its composed mostly of people who notice small details or who have good humor. This channel attracts high IQ people
Honestly, what they say in interviews is often bullshit (this is typical of a lot of bands, actually). They absolutely do plan this shit out, they'll even admit this in some interviews and then downplay it in others.

It's amazing how you instantly get a flowing groove when the hi-hat comes in, it's like the entire song changes, but it doesn't.

There's more.
You can think of the harmonic rhythm of the fourth riff - roughly, the rhythm with which the notes change - as being in triple time. The contour is: minor 3, sharp 4, perfect 5 (with root notes in between). You can hear it trace the accents of the 13/8 phrase, but it only lines up every third bar of 13/8 because there are only two accent notes in each bar. So the melody itself is kind of its own little polymeter.
_Then_ during the second half, they continue this as they start switching notes out. The melody still follows the triple-time contour, but with certain notes in the 3-4-5 cycle swapped for higher notes for a kind of melodic crescendo effect.
This is my favorite Meshuggah song.

This is a technique called an isorhythm. Meshuggah uses this quite a lot. The prechorus riff of stengah, guitar solo riff of bleed, The entirety of the first 2 minutes of pineal gland optics, the riffs in dancers right after the modulation section, the descending riff before the guitar solo in I am Colossus,the intros and outros of swarm, the outro riff of demiurge, and the verse riff of Nostrum are all examples of this. It's like a cycle within a cycle.
There are probably more examples of it, but those ones stand out to me.

yes the snare of this band can totaly be an obsession. I analyse each songs of them just in esperance to one day succesfully play one of their songs for like 4years... (I had to learn play drums first, cauz didn't know much on that in the past.)

One of my favourite things in this song is "a melodic polymeter" in the 4th riff. The riff consists of two "phrases" (as it was shown on the paper), but the melodic pattern - of three. So there is a constant shift between rhythm and melody. And even though they sometimes change accents, the melodic pattern stays the same. Exactly the same thing happens in "Dancers...", pretty much through the whole song.
Called an isorhythm. Simply put you have a rhythmic figure of let's say 8 notes, but a pitch cycle of 7 notes so it'll always save shifting. Prechorus of stengah, guitar solo riff of bleed, as you mentioned dancers, the first 2 and a half minutes of pineal gland Optics, the descending riff on I am colossus right before the guitar solo, the intro and outro of swarm, the outro of demiurge and there are probably some on TVSOR as well, but I can't think of any more off the top of my head.

Something feels so "drunken" about this song. I tap my foot and sometimes I am suddenly tapping backwards (down on the upbeat). But then at times everything lines up and it just sounds amazing... probably because its been slowly aligning and I am subconsciously waiting for it. Tension and release. Fantastic stuff. I wonder if they graph it out.
The tapping down on the upbeat is very stronk in Monstrocity aswell tbh
for real! while playing it it grooves so hard, but is so meditative at the same time
The hardest part about playing these kinds of riffs on guitar is changing key/chords mid rhythmic pattern. It always feels so awkward. Incredible analysis as always!

Holy shit...I never realized that it stays in 17/16. I always interpreted the harmonic changes as turnarounds that resolve but you’re right...the key change is just happening in the middle of the riff. That’s insane!

spent half my life not understanding how this riff works. kept counting 17 and never figured out where it reset. now it makes total sense visually. and explains why the harmonic change mid-riff is so sick sounding.
I’ve never seen visual presentations like this with drum ed content creators . This approach is really helpful when trying to grasp these rhythms that tend to mess with your brain as you attempt to break them down as time signatures. Excellent content!
