It's impressive that his FIRST acting gig was playing James Bond. How many people were that lucky? Not too many. For his first time, he did just fine. It's still one of my favorite Bond films.

Can't believe George Lazenby went into a cinema in 1962 to see Connery as Bond, then 5 years later Connery quits and less than 2 years Lazenby replaces the same man he went to go and see as Bond in the Cinema. What an amazing success story that is!!!!!! Unfortunately though lazenby got a bit too over confident and suffered terribly from a poor decision making after 1969

I truly believe Lazenby's Bond surpassed his predecessor.
Lazenby gave us a Bond who was funny but sad, heroic and tragic, resolute and resourceful, yet powerless in the end. A man who really had a story to tell and live. I think no other movie really gave us a better story than On Her Majesty's Secret Service, nor any other actor gave us a better Bond

The difference is that Lazenby really truly wanted to be Bond at the time of OHMSS, Connery didn't. If Connery had been in this film he'd have given the dreary performance that he gave in Diamonds are Forever and taken away much of the excitement of the movie, which is exactly what he did with Diamonds are Forever. I love Connery but I think that this shows how much Lazenby wanted to be Bond in this movie and because of that he got it. For a first movie I think he did very well. Great Film.

Living that kind of lifestyle can overwhelming. Having to do all those interviews and tours, the vices involved, being controlled by the studio. I get why he walked away to some extent, but I think if he had been cooler headed, a compromise with Broccoli could've been reached for Diamonds Are Forever and maybe another sequel.
For people who wanted to bash him and consider him an afterthought, he does deserve it. It was like winning a multi-million dollar lottery then setting all the money on fire.

My favourite movie, of all time. Sean Connery could not have brought anything more to the role except for a familiar face. George may not have been an actor but then, how much acting were the subsequent Bonds asked to do ?. It's not Shakspeare. The audience don't want Olivier or Burton. It doesn't have to be believable. We leave all that behind at the box office. 'I have my ticket. Entertain me'. A shamefully underrated film but the best of the franchise. I love it.

      Hiring Lazenby.
Although Lazenby received much support from Broccoli and Saltzman, he had a less easy ride from the board of United Artists who were none too keen to see him take over the mantle of Bond. On 7 July 1968, test footage of Lazenby and Rigg had been sent to United Artists in New York - and the were less than impressed by what they saw. On 23 September 1968, UA's head man David Picker even flew into London, desperate to tempt Connery back into the fold. But Connery was adamant that he wasn't coming back - EON and UA had made him a star and Connery was now a major player, capable of picking only the roles that interested him. And at this moment, Bond simply didn't interest him at all. It was only reluctantly that UA accepted EON's recommendation that Lazenby be given the part (MI6 Production Notes - On Her Majesty's Secret Service).

OHMSS is the best Bond film ever made and George Lazenby did a great job, Timothy Dalton basically played Lazenbys Bond in his 2 films .

I personally Loved latzenby. An OHMSS is one of my favorite films of all time. Personally I saw him as an upgrade from connery's sad performances in YoLT and DAF. I feel like if George had portrayed Bond in those 2 flicks they would have been much better. Connery gave strong performances from '62-'65 but I just feel like he had nothing left to offer after thunderball and the franchise felt tired. George would have added a lot more liveliness go the series since he's so much younger and actually WANTED the role of Bond!

Connery in Y.O.L.T. is the character of Bond in O.H.M.S.S. An agent tired of his job, finds happiness in love and marriage. In D.A.F. an aged and heavier Connery with this performance is perfect, as Bond after Tracy's death.

If you think Geroge Lazenby is the right "actor", try to imagine "on her majesty's secret service" with Sean Connery or even Roger Moore. This man fooled everybody on the production and we have to bear this drifter. With this screenplay, direction, spporting actors and WITHOUT this man, On her majesty's secret service would be the best bond movie ever done.

Great clip! Can't help wondering whether to take some of it with a pinch of salt or not, but still...
His voice sounds unrecognisably different from how it sounded in the film. Obviously, many years have passed, but Connery and Moore still sound basically the same as they did fifty years ago. Not George though...?

At the request of the producers, George changed his voice slightly for the film, working to sound more "English." In real life, his voice is a little gruffer and Australian. Also, for a third of the film he is dubbed over by George Baker.

Back in the day Connery quit because the studio had the poor bastard cranking out almost a film per year.....a Bond film per year! Can you imagine the physical stress despite the pace of a movie per year or year and a half? It wore him out physically and mentally.
