  • This was last fall. I tried my hand at trying to edit and it didn’t work so here’s the total video. Kinda long. Oh well, a day in the life moving rigs!
    Moving out of a bridge site on dirt roads to county roads and then to a main highway. 6NZ Cat sounds good!
    Little did I know that bad luck in threes came with that load. Almost back to my shop I ran out of fuel, for some reason it sucked the one tank dry. Common Pete issue. Next morning I did my pre-trip....flat trailer tire. Then I get to KS and have a meeting with the DOT....ugh!

    This is how you video your driving! no music no talking no BS just to the point and let her sing! I’m getting into heavy haul soon which brought me here. Countless videos and they all have issues and this one is perfect.

      Thanks for commenting! I plan to do a series of videos focusing on heavy haul. Basically from the point you’re at getting started working up to equipment you’ll need etc. The biggest assets aren’t high dollar equipment. It’s patience and planning.

      Sorry I’m so late responding to your comment. It does sound good! :-). I wish the mic would catch the sound from the pipe and not so much turbo. Maybe I need a better video of that sound. I’m about to start a series of heavy haul. First the fundamentals then getting into truck and trailer spec. I’ve got 20 years in it, I might as well share what I’ve learned.

    Do you still have the mufflers on or are they straight pipe. I like this sound. Not like some fart cans that guys run with no mufflers.

    • @Junkyardmethod
      @Junkyardmethod  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It has mufflers on it but there’s not much to them, basically a resonator. It takes the bark out of it but still sounds good. Above 1700 rpm cruising at highway speed the drone gets a little old.

    Is that a brownie or did you splurge for the two speed diffs??

    • @Junkyardmethod
      @Junkyardmethod  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It has two speed rears. My preference is full lockers and a 4 speed auxiliary but this truck was already built when it came to me.

      @@Junkyardmethod what are your thoughts on D52-590p 4.75 with Meritor fat 30 3 speed. I don’t know much about the 1750 Spicer

    • @Junkyardmethod
      @Junkyardmethod  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@kody9509 it’s supposed to be a badass piece. The 1750 is just a 1241 with a bigger input. The issue with them is the input torque capacity goes waaaay down when gross weight goes up. I’d be curious to see a chart for the fat 30 showing input torque capacity vs gvw. They claim 30,000 ft lbs but I’d expect a trade off as weigh goes up. My favorite gear ratio for a big trailer is 4.56 with tall 24.5 rubber. It was very rare I didn’t have a comfortable start with that gear, aux in 1:1 grossing 245-260k. The only drawback to the fat 30 is the low range is so low that you will be applying significant torque to the driveline and rear ends, it’s easy to do and not know it. With my 4 speed I rarely used the lowest under. First under was more than enough unless I was backing in somewhere and needed to go slow so the tiller man could keep up steering the back end.

    • @kody9509
      @kody9509 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Junkyardmethod all really good points. My thoughts on the 4.75 would be to leave the fat 30 in overdrive and run direct when a little more is needed. Then the Low low backing. Maybe that would let the diffs keep a true 240K gross rating. But I don’t know it’s all speculation, just something I’ve been kicking around.

    • @Junkyardmethod
      @Junkyardmethod  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@kody9509 if the fat 30 is anything like the 1241/1750 then you’ll want to gear the truck so that the majority of your work occurs in direct. Using the under or over creates more heat as well as wear. When I was brought up around the old 1241 and brown lipe boxes starting out in OD was a big no no. That’s how stuff got broke, especially the brown lipe boxes. They weren’t super strong to begin with.

    How do you get the truck rolling without it hopping from a complete stop?

    • @Junkyardmethod
      @Junkyardmethod  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The biggest reason it doesn’t hop is it’s geared low enough. I also had the two speed rears in low which has a ratio of something like 5.38. The next thing is the clutch. Some release like crap under a heavy load, some aren’t adjusted correctly either. The truck also has an 18 speed which has a nice low gear to start out in.
