  • Yonaguni: An island pulled straight from the pages of middle-ages Japanese lust poetry. An island sailors whisper about to new crew. An island of women.
    Before I forget: A massive thank you to all the new Patrons. Kata and I were blown away by the response. Incredible to know how many of you are invested enough to take part. I'd love to do something special in return. Maybe pins? Everybody likes a pin.

      Dounjinshi doesn't need to be hentai, and not all hentai manga is considered dounjinshi (there are officially published hentai magazines and original creators), but many young artists need to practice on something and make living for themselves, while they learn the craft and so it just happens that sex sells...

    • @kgoblin5084
      @kgoblin5084 4 ปีที่แล้ว +416

      The story of the Amazon's wasn't a sexual fantasy... nor were they looking for men to impregnate them. It was a patriarchal horror story where women held the martial & political power and men were subservient to them.
      Details about pregnancy in the original myth were there to flesh out the story, to answer the immediate question of how the Amazon's kept their tribe alive without people of both genders... and rather than them sexually ravishing any man they came across what was actually in the original myth was that there was s specific sibling tribe consisting solely of timid men, and that is who the Amazon's mated with, and basically only with that tribe. Ancient Greek boys were not dreaming of finding the Amazon's to get unlimited nookie, because the tale didn't support those dreams. The Amazons would gut the boys outright, not screw them.
      For sure, there has been many a modern day pornographic re-imagining where the Amazon's do capture & claim whatever hapless & lucky male they come across as concubines... but those are modern day re-imaginings. Also, Rule 34... of course there is porn of it, but by extension that doesn't make the original porn. The original story just does not have the slant you think it does.

      @Crystal Dreams Yeah, I think about that all the time. That's why Americans' celebration of their veterans and war heroes is so cringe to me. Imagine any other country celebrating people who killed other people by the hundred thousands. Actually Japan still does that, that's why the Yasukuni shrine is so controversial. But basically what they are doing is the same as Americans. Only difference is that they lost. Not saying it's good that the Japanese honor war criminals, I just think people who murdered shouldn't be celebrated anywhere.

      @@GloomGaiGar Read again. That's not what I wrote. Veteran's Day is about the people who defended the freedom of the USA. At least I think that's what you would say. The thing I have a problem with is that some, if not many, of those people have murdered. I'm not too keen on celebrating people like that under any circumstances. Because again, if the US had lost the war, those people killing the most "enemies" would've been known worldwide as war criminals (as are now many Japanese generals of the time), not heros or veterans. It's just a matter of perspective.

      If it allows you to travel back and forth without ripping the universe's continuity apart, why not go into the future and acquire their tech to THEN go back into an island like that?
      Imagine that you have the historical and societal knowledge to exchange for technology and scientific knowledge of a Kardashev 2 or K3 civilization. Then you go back to an island of your choosing and uplift the whole civilization. You will need to spend a lot of time and energy but basic life extension tech should make you able to live for thousand years during each era.
      Hell, why come back, though? You ought to be able to get a sex robot and all the amnenities like antibiotics and full dive VR on the future. If you only want pleasure, that is the easier route. If you want to colonize your own virgin world, you will need the tech and put in a lot of effort.
      Otherwise, if you just go back, you can likely end up like many Portuguese in Brazil's early colonization. Best case scenaruo, they went ashore and ended up as pets until they annoyed someone or caught some disease and winded up dead. Worst case, they were killed as invaders to start with.

    What’s interesting to me is that creation myth was prrrrobably an ancient propaganda piece. While not definitive, there is quite a bit of evidence to suggest an egalitarian or even matriarchal social structure predated the Japanese polity responsible for commissioning the creation myth.
    In early Japan women’s lot in life wasn’t amazing, but it was surprisingly a lot better than it’d become from about 1300 onward. Again it’s hotly disputed, but in theory the myth (probably also commissioned to put tribal gods into an acceptable pantheon) was likely step 1 towards the slip of women’s position in society. Although I’m not sure how intentional that was since women could be empresses for another solid century or so.
    Also Saikaku, the author, is a riot and everyone should read him. He’s one of the few Classical Japanese authors who doesn’t sound snoody and way too into himself.

    • @stephennootens916
      @stephennootens916 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's what I thought, I remember reading that for years before the island were invaded many tribes were lead by priestesses.

    • @fennec812
      @fennec812 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Stephen Nootens It’s still pretty debater as far as I know. The priestess in question was Himiko (sometimes pronounced Pimiko). Although she Ostensibly rules, her brother definitely played... some role. That’s where sources get vague and arguments crop up. Historians can’t seem to agree if the brother was just Himiko’s errand boy, if they were co-rulers, or if Himiko was just a religious figurehead and the brother made all the practical decisions. Last I read into it, jury is still out.
      Though in the imperial histories (Nihongi) there are mentions of female chieftains leading rebellions in modern day Kyushu. Also some of the kofun tombs that have been cracked open have female skeletons buried with objects that would suggest power or at least importance.
      I don’t really know, I’m no expert. Although I don’t think many experts would disagree with the idea that women definitely must have had a better lot in life in the earlier period than in post Kamakura Japan. In Heian they could even hold property and manage assets whereas young men couldn’t. That’s what made marriage so important. Men could participate in politics, but they needed the wealth only women could provide to be successful in the political arena. So it was a... sort of? Equal union? Better than a lot of early civilizations.
      Then things went to hell in a hand basket for women and arguably they’ve never really gotten out of the inequity pit. RIP

      @fennec812 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Stephen Nootens Thats interesting, actually. Generally a lot of Japanese folks are kinda hush hush about the matriarchy thing. It really calls into question the official imperial timeline.
      A lot of the first emperors were probably just myths or composites/inspired by figures from before the position was ever formally made. But they are treated as real and the existence of female chieftains kind of poops on all of that.
      I have zero proof whatsoever, but I’ve long been suspicious that this is the reason why the imperial house won’t let fuller excavations of tombs take place lol.

    • @stephennootens916
      @stephennootens916 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Should be noted, just like Evan alluded to, this is the type of story or myth that almost any country and culture also has... xD Not many survived or are well known though because puritanism.
    But it gets a pretty interesting take for Japan. Some other curiosities - Yonaguni is among the southern and western most japanese islands, right at the frontier with Taiwan. Seems it has a population of only 2000 people these days. It's almost as distant from Okinawa than Okinawa is from what people usually see as the southmost tip of the biggest japanese landmass (Kyushu).... but you know, still part of Okinawa's prefecture, which is still part of Kyushu.
    Interesting thing about some japanese prefectures people might not know, some of then extends over long clusters of islands spread through the ocean. Tokyo is the one that surprises people the most... people think only about the city, but Tokyo prefecture actually reaches far into the Pacific because of how many islands it encompasses. It includes the famous Iwo Jima, which is almost on the same latitude as Okinawa.
    Yonaguni has another huge myth, but regarding it's waters - it has what seems to be ruins of some ancient civilization, to the point it was called the Atlantis of the East. But for the most part, scientific community says they are just natural formations. It became a myth because it kinda looks like an artificial construction... look up for Yonaguni Monument.
