- Anbernic sent over their latest retro gaming handheld. This is the Anbernic RG Cube. It is an niche gaming handheld with a 1:1 aspect ratio display offering an interesting way to play some of your favorite retro games. The screen display is ideal for consoles like NES, Game Boy and Piko-8 but how does it fare with consoles like N64, PSP, Gamecube and PS2?
The RG Cube uses the same SoC as the Anbernic RG556, which means its got lots of power to play a wide variety of games.
In this video we are going to do an in-depth review including the good and bad of the handheld. Let me know your thoughts down in the comment section about if you like this device.

If anyone is wondering it can do 16:9 through HDMI you just have to go into the settings and adjust it.

Nice review. I'm guessing you can add roms without an SD card since there is internal storage? Like direct downloads from your cloud?

@@pedrozaragoza4664 it should just prompt you once you have the sd card in and launch their front end. But honestly many of their roms are low quality and broken I suggest starting fresh.

I just got my rg cube i am having troubling loading the games do i need to download the files and install? I thought this game with preloaded games?

I’ve ordered the white one, I wish it was the really bright white all over like the odin 2 but something about this device just makes me want one 😂 Spent £165 on the model with the highest sd size I believe 256gb
How did you add your own games with an sd card. Did you just make rom folders put the games in the rom folders, then put it in your rg cube?

I already have the RG556 and love the OLED screen. Would I be wasting my time investing in the RG Cube or is the 556 better in most if not all aspects? Thx.

If anyone can help me it would be great! Please lol I just tried adding GameCube games to the sd card. They are .rvz files. When I inserted the sd card back to the rg cube and rescan the game files the GameCube games don’t show up. I added ps2, 3ds and other games with no problem. Should I used a different emulator or different files?
I use the dolphin emulator for GameCube seems to work well I think I just extracted the Rom file and then open emulator select game you downloaded and it should play
Now i just need someone to mod a simcard slot into it...
I have a 556 already so this was a definite pass for me

Agreed, needed Nintendo or Vita style D-pad. Also, D-pad on top would be better as well, as the 1:1 aspect ratio it compatible with more older retro systems rather than joystick games. 🍻
I see this as pretty much a shmup machine which needs the analog

I’ve seen some nice Wii gameplay on this, best to play Wii games that are not in 16:9

Can the RG Cube be used as a native gamepad for Switch emulation on PC?
Not that I'm aware of.
for anything above 3ds rg556 is better (wider and bigger oled display), for anything below RGB30 is better (retro doad centeres cause above, price l, dimensions, quieter buttons, frontal speakers…)
seems like it'd be better for 3ds and the older retro stuff, even MAME pc engine and neo geo.
would not touch PS1 and above though.
So biased about the Genesis D-Pad, I love the Genesis.
Lol yeah, I mean it works fine, but it just looks so bulky
I feel it rolls easier which makes it harder to use in precision platformer games as well as puzzle games like Tetris and Dr. Mario. 🍻

@@fillerbunnyninjashark271 yes, a little similar, and I agree, didn't feel good playing 2D platformer games on the Xbox D-pad. I'm still considering taking the chance and getting it, but if I return it, it would be because of the D-pad, for sure. 🍻
I’ve never purchased a handheld like this, is the website reputable? Just want to make sure I don’t spend $200 and lose my money cause believe it or not that’s not cheap lol
Buying directly from anbernic is safe, or you can wait until they show up on Amazon. LITNXT is also another safe site.

It's cool, but it's limiting with that aspect ratio, powerful enough to play some gamecube and ps2 but doesn't make use of the screen, and the games that can fully use the screen doesn't need all that power and has the analog stick at the top. Its a niche device which I'm sure it scratches the itches of some folks, also it's great for reviews and content!

I agree with everything you said. I do want to see a beefed up anberic handheld that clears gamecube and ps2 emulation, and pushes into switch performance
This screen is actually very good for Ps2/Gamecube
The 1:1 screen is closer to a 4:3 ratio then 16:9. This is perfect for PS2 and GameCube. Just wish it was closer in power to Retroid Pocket pro 4
Majority of GameCube and PS2 support 16:9 through hacks. 3:2 also looks better on 16:9 for 4:3 games
But what psp, n64,Dreamcast, and Saturn games does it come with? Also the screen is too small for ds games as well as you mentioned,psp , especially with only 720p resolution.
Mine came with no games and I didn't have any issues with screen size on ds but if you want a bigger screen the rg556 is the way to go
One of the sites that has it for sale says you can also buy it preloaded with games - a 128 gig version 4000+ games and a 256 gig version comes with 9000+ games I’m still trying to find out which comes it comes with though
@@therunawaykid6523 anbernic cards are decent in terms of the games but the SD card itself has a tendency to fail over time. Also they won't have any popular Nintendo games. No Mario titles at all, metroidz etc.

The performance is very good wich surprised me to be honest. But the plastic feels cheap and it stinks like cheap plastic. I dont know if im the only one having this problem
