- This video tells the viewers about the life story and biography of singer Mukesh Chand Mathur who was popularly known as the voice of Raj Kapoor. Mukesh started his career in Bollywood as an actor who sang his own songs but soon shifted to playback singing. Along with Shankar Jaikishan, Hasrat Jaipuri and Shailendra, Mukesh became the close knit music team of Raj Kapoor. Mukesh won his first Filmfare award for Raj Kapoor's Anari movie with the song 'Sab Kuch Seekha Humne Na Seekhi Hoshiyari'. Mukesh won his last Filmfare award for Kabhie Kabhie in 1976. Mukesh won a National Award for singing the song 'Kai Baar Yun Bhi Dekha Hai' in Rajnigandha movie. Mukesh died in Detroit, USA due to a massive heart attack while he was preparing for a music concert with Lata Mangeshkar.

It was interesting to learn that Mukesh Mathur came from a large family in Delhi & his leaning towards music started early & he used to learn ftom a music teacher indirectly who used to come to teach Mukeshji's sister.
Had Mukeshji not sung at his sister's wedding, the nation would have not got such a beautiful voice. His family had a filmi connection too ...& thanks to Motilal ...he recognized the talent early at the wedding & brought Mukesh alongwith him to Mumbai, where he got to act & sing on the silver screen.
The song clip of the 40s that you have shared.. we find that it is hard to differentiate between K L Saigal & Mukesh. It was nice of his colleagues who themselves were legends in their fields adviced Mukesh to sing in his own unique voice.
Mukeshji got fame & success in the years to come.

For me, he is the best of all playback singers in Indian cinema. I have been listening to him since 30 years everyday and never get bored with his songs. The pain and melancholy that you find in his voice makes any sad song immortal. He is simply a genius. Wished he had lived longer.

Thanks for giving us this detailed background of Mukeshji. Always loved him because he sounded like Saigal Saab. In fact, correct me if I am wrong, all yester singers aped Sigalsaab, even Rafisaab. It's a well known fact my fav Kishoreda started his singing career by singing Saigalsaab's song on stage!! One more fact- Cricketer Mr. B. S. Chandrashekhar heard this song Dil जलता है... and thought it was Saigalsaab. When the truth dawned on him he came to Mumbai and met Mukeshji and since then he is a fan of Mukeshji. ❤️

Very under-rated singer.He introduced a new style of playback singing.Raj Kapoor & Mukeshji became soulmate to each other in '50s & '60s.Shankar-Jaikishen duo composed most of his filmi songs.But in '70s Mukeshji & Salil Chowdhury combination created some memorable songs.Kahin door jab,Maine tere liye,Kahin karti hogi,Kai bar unhi dekha hai,Ye din kya ye etc.R D Burman composed very few songs for him but those songs are all time classic.Ek din bik jayega & Suhani chandni raate were most popular.His last song Chanchal sheetal from SSS was composed by LP.His untimely death has deprived us many more songs.

Possibly one of the best episodes that I've seen of yours. Living in the diaspora for over a hundred years, the influence of Bollywood was strong especially through music. A lot of us learnt from this and a few were lucky enough, myself included to have formal training. I lived in Bombay for a few years and my teacher hails from Agra gharana. @@sheikhriajul6882 I am a great fan of Mukeshji. Others come only next to him, as per me. But, our large country has produced many other singers too who performed at par or even a bit greater than any hindi artistes. Hindi is not the only language spoken by Indians. Majority minority is not a matter. It is wrong to give credit of all fields to only hindi artistes. The singer who had begun career alongwith Mukesh, Rafi but died in 1974, i. e much before, who, by his death had sung 10,000 + songs ( world record by then ) apart from composing excellent music for 114 movies and many private songs, was late sree Ghantasala Venkateswara Rao of Telugu field. So, one cannot say that only one is the best of India. Hindi's best is ok. Though i cannot compare GVR with any other singer, just to let you know about his greatness, i give hereunder, some links.
