Excellent Rahoulji. Manna Dey is a legendary singer and this is an honest tribute to him. Not only classical songs but even in rock and roll songs he did justice like , Aao Twist Kare which was a massive hit. All the songs you played are immortal in their true essence. Even in romantic songs he used to record in Bengali were in the lips of everyone. He could sing a Ami Sri Sri Bhojohori Manna and in the same film a exquisite romantic rendition of Hoyto tomari jonno just to cite an example. I remember the film , Mela which had some hit songs of Mohammad Rafi but the one song Manna Dey sang , Dekho re Hua , it seems he has sung from the core of his heart and it simply touches your soul with the feelings he evoked with his rendering.

He was so courteous and humble to my friend that it was hard for him to believe that it was indeed Manna Da, the legendary singer, whom he was interacting with. In 1986 I had the opportunity to experience a live program of, Manna Dey at Netaji Indoor stadium.Among many songs he sang Zindegi kaisi hai paheli hai...which was definitely a different experience altogether. In this episode you have really picked some of the best ones I must say.I myself is a singer and music is my first love. My favorite hindi song of Manna Dey is Chham chham baje re payelia..and being a bengali myself my list of bengali songs of Manna Dey will not end perhaps. Still,just to mention a few Coffee House, Jibone ki pabona, Ami sri sri bhojohori manna,Ami je jalsaghorer, and so so many.

I somehow feel the reason Manna Dey ji is not super popular like Kishore Kumar ji or Mohd Rafi ji is due to the fact that his voice is actually very fluid depending upon the song and the actor the song is being picturized. So, many people would hear the song but not be able to identify the singer as there's no easily distinguishable signature pattern that one could easily find with Kishore Kumar ji's voice or Rafiji's voice. But this video surely made me uncover the hidden treasure of Manna Dey ji's songs.

Though he could not become the permanent voice for any stars of hindi cinema but for whom he sang,he delivered such memorable songs. In bengali movies he delivered a variety of hits in voice of all time favourite Uttam Kumar which included classical based songs in films like SANYASI RAJA & STREE ,(in both music by Nachiketa Ghosh), pop and other varieties in SANKHABELA, CHADMABESI ( music Sudhin Dasgupta). For Soumitra Chatterjee he sang hits for films like BASANTA BILAP(music- Sudhin Dasgupta) and NATUN DINER ALO. In the film Deep Jele Jai,the original bengali version of hindi movie Khamoshi with waheda rahman his song "emon bondhu r k ache tomar moto sister" as voice for actor Anil Chatterjee the music composed by Hemanta Mukherjee will never be forgotten. A beautiful podcast on Manna Dey dear Rahoul...You have put in great efforts in making this trivia & it is clearly visible in this podcast. The transformation of Prabodh Chandra Dey to Manna Dey was interesting ( Moving from Calcutta to Mumbai ) It was very nice to hear that he got his classical training from his talented Uncle K.C.Dey, despite he being visually impaired. Interesting to learn that legendary S.D.Burman, was K.C.Dey's student !! Despite spending 8 years in Mumbai, Manna Dey although was singing songs, he did not get the desired success in the early years, thanks to S.D.Burman. who gave a hit song to Manna Dey. which brought the singer into some limelight. I personally find that in bollywood, Manna Dey was not offered variety of songs as Mohd.Rafi or Kishore Kumar got to sing. I think the music directors felt that chirpy songs was out of Manna Dey's radius, hence he was offered serious songs & classical songs. But E bhai Zara Dekh Ke Chalo, Zindagi Kaisi Hai Pheli & Ek Chatur Naar were songs that he sang very very beautifully & naturally. One Fimfate to the legend is a bit of dampner..but he was showered with National Awards later in his life. Excellent video dear. I like songs by Manna Dey more than other singers. Likes and listens to his songs. I met him once in Irla, Mumbai and got the opportunity to talk. He was told about " NATHLI SE TUTA MOTI RE ". Private song. He was very happy and gave a good smile.

Though he could not become the permanent voice for any stars of hindi cinema but for whom he sang,he delivered such memorable songs. In bengali movies he delivered a variety of hits in voice of all time favourite Uttam Kumar which included classical based songs in films like SANYASI RAJA & STREE ,(in both music by Nachiketa Ghosh), pop and other varieties in SANKHABELA, CHADMABESI ( music Sudhin Dasgupta). For Soumitra Chatterjee he sang hits for films like BASANTA BILAP(music- Sudhin Dasgupta) and NATUN DINER ALO. In the film Deep Jele Jai,the original bengali version of hindi movie Khamoshi with waheda rahman his song "emon bondhu r k ache tomar moto sister" as voice for actor Anil Chatterjee the music composed by Hemanta Mukherjee will never be forgotten. The transformation of Prabodh Chandra Dey to Manna Dey was interesting ( Moving from Calcutta to Mumbai )
It was very nice to hear that he got his classical training from his talented Uncle K.C.Dey, despite he being visually impaired.
Interesting to learn that legendary S.D.Burman, was K.C.Dey's student !!
Despite spending 8 years in Mumbai, Manna Dey although was singing songs, he did not get the desired success in the early years, thanks to S.D.Burman. who gave a hit song to Manna Dey. which brought the singer into some limelight.
I personally find that in bollywood, Manna Dey was not offered variety of songs as Mohd.Rafi or Kishore Kumar got to sing. I think the music directors felt that chirpy songs was out of Manna Dey's radius, hence he was offered serious songs & classical songs.
But E bhai Zara Dekh Ke Chalo, Zindagi Kaisi Hai Pheli & Ek Chatur Naar were songs that he sang very very beautifully & naturally.
One Fimfate to the legend is a bit of dampner..but he was showered with National Awards later in his life.
