- Villaba, Leyte was discovered by Boholano Traders, These traders landed on the Western Coast and found fertile plains and built their houses along the river and forest. Along the river grow in abundance luxuriant trees called "HINDANG". Hence the settlers called the river HIMANDANGON.
During the colonization of the Philippines by the Spanish Conquistador, a group of Spaniards happened to be stranded on the shores of Himandangon River, name the place as Hamindangon. Then it was changed to Nueva Galicia in honor of the wife of the Spanish Provincial Governor of Leyte.
The Spanish Governor General in Manila who then represented both the church and the state order that the tribunal and the church be built adjacent to each other. So the Pariish Priest, Reverend Pantaleon De Veyra followed the order and constructed the house of the school, the church and the tribunal through "Pintakasi"
While the construction was going on, another group of Spaniards on an inspection tour landed on the shores of Nueva Galicia. This group of Spaniards liked the village and had it rename "Villa Alba" ( Villa of Alba ) in honor of the wife of the Governor in Manila, Dona Pia Alba, the third name was then later shortened to "VILLABA" when the town was officially established.
The name Villaba is a combination of Villa and Alba which bears and English translation of "house of flowers".
Villa Alba Festival showcases the Villabanon's strong commitment of building "a house of values" which center in the solidarity of family as a foundation of spirituality anchored in the Gospel Values and Christian Teaching. The festival also builds "a house of change" which motives our Villabanon's millennials to make a difference and become catalyts of change using social media platforms as a medium of responsible information dissemination. It creates "a house of hope" that encourages all Villabanon's to be resilient in all the battles of life. After all, we are engineers and architects in our own life. Armed with determination, we can build a good and happy life.
Villa Alba elaborates the beauty and fragrance of the flowers which reflect the genuine characters of the Villabanon's. our sweetness is expressed through our warmth and hospitality like the nectar of the festive rhythm of the nature. It is the Villabanon's humble way of expressing our gratitude to Senor Sto. Nino for the countless blessings endowed upon us. A festive celebration offered to the glory of the Holy Child Jesus, our protector and intercessor through our creative dance of tahnks giving ambrosial banquet of grace in the harmony of colors and synchronization of figures animated by the beat of the drums. Villaba is a house of Flowers and the town of Brave the word itself.
