Steve Backshall and the team discuss their reaction as a polar bear approached their camp on the Scoresbysund fjord. With the Arctic warming at twice the rate of the rest of the planet, life here is changing for both people and wildlife - and that means climate change is driving more encounters between polar bears and humans. An interesting fact: pre-historic polar bear remains were discovered in a Scottish cave originating from a time before the interglacial period (we are still in a warm period of that: Holocene) began following the last Ice Age (one of numerous).

Polar bears are doing just fine. Yeah they might be getting closer to people but they’re thriving in their environment. Undoubtedly our efforts have paid off to go from an estimated 5,000 left to nearly 40,000 today..I say, from every indication, that the bears have and will continue to adapt to their environment.
