    I wanted the freight one with the blue 47 ,sets in those days were great ,I got the GWR one as a birthday present my mum paid £19.99 in hamleys in April 78 lot of money then ,she had a policy mature and we all got a treat ,the seating was a alternative if you didn’t want the waiting room it slotted into the same place ,I liked the red buildings better than what came in 78 ,once again and said this before the 77 catalogue was to me one of the best ,anyone remember the street parties the silver buses and the happy times something we lost no punch ups I went to a party in twickenham and mick Robinson from magpie was there I was 10 and the kids we had our Party in the garden of the pub while my parents and grand parents got smashed in the bar hehehehe ,thanks again Oscar cheered me up no end sir 👍🏻😊be safe

    Hi Oscar,
    There is something inherently exciting about unboxing a proper train set and this one really would be fit for the Queen- I remember seeing this one and the Brush freight set in the department store and it was well beyond our price range- still the Rural Rambler was a lot of fun especially when combined with matchbox cars and airfix soldiers!
    You will be pleased to hear the the independent toy shop Howleys is still in Weymouth and does great trade- complete with glass cabinets with an enticing range of the latest Hornby locos:-))
    Best Wishes Ned

      Good morning Ned, sounds like great ingredients for fun Rural Rambler, matchbox cars and Airfix soldiers. Great to hear about Howley being still in business and doing well. Just had a look on street view, it,s a large toy shop and looks to be a magical place. Just how toy shops should be. I hope they continue to thrive.

    Wow, this took me back to Christmas 1977, I got this set, and was thrilled with it. I don’t remember there being a battery controller,. My parents had got me an electric transformer. I spent many happy hours in my bedroom with this set. I was about 10 or 11 when I received it and sold it when I was about 16 sadly🥲.

    A lovely set, my local toy shops in NW London didn’t carry much of the Hornby range at this time largely due to the arrival of the Star Wars range of toys. Got my first Hornby Railways set the year before in ‘76 (R177 pick-up goods set) with the battery controller. The batteries didn’t last too long as I remember. Great to see it being run on its tracks as opposed to on your layout. Another great video on this quiet lockdown Sunday morning 👍🏻

    This hit me with a wave of nostalgia!
    I didn't grow up in the 70s but when I was getting into train models when I was younger this was a set I got off a family friend as they weren't using it anymore, I remember it distinctly being my first tender engine since my other 2 were a gwr shunter and thomas-
    Now all my stuff is in my attic due to space and parents, also me losing interest when I got introduced to sonic and animatronics.
    But this has brought back a wave of nostalgia for something I couldnt find much online when I was younger

    1977 was a pinnacle year for Tri-ang/Hornby. This train set reminds me very much of the deluxe "Orient Express" train set I always wanted as a little girl. A very nice set for the Queen's Jubilee. I like that finish on the locomotive, it's a nice shade of green. The coaches are very nice as well. They've got a very shiny finish to them compared to the earlier versions. Shame the brake wasn't available in time for the Jubilee set. Lisa

    Hi, It was interesting to see the list of Hornby service dealers and particularly in Cumbria. I must have a look if I still have one of these leaflets. I remember being a customer of K Greatorex in Ulverston from the late 1950's shopping for TT gauge items and later at Maurice Roberts in Barrow for 00 gauge of which I still have boxes which bear the shops name. Sadly both shops are long gone but have been replaced by a new Hornby dealer and on local line retailers. Thanks for the memories.

    Oscar, Thanks for another thought provoking video. Interesting to compare the UK RRP for these Silver Jubilee sets with the Australian prices at the time. Looking at my 1977 R280 Catalogue (with the six page Hornby Railways of Australia supplement stapled to the centre pages) I see from my ritual of penciling local prices that bot these Jubilee sets were priced at $99.98. So the UK price of £31.95 at the typical 1977 exchange rate converts to about $50. So where the extra $50 markup went was quite a topic for modellers in Australia then.
    Also from a time before Hornby price lists ceased to become available.
    At the Melbourne Model Dockyard at the time, as listed on the service centres at 9:12, I could by three Wrenn W2218 4MT Standard 2-6-4Ts for the price of this set with change for a Wrenn wagon.
    The Model Dockyard were not happy with Hornby pricing at the time and so ditched Hornby to concentrate on directly importing Wrenn as their UK model range. The rest of their shop filled with Japanese and Korean Brass in O and HO scales as well as Marklin, Athearn and Lilliput. From the late 60s they were also the main imported Japanese N scale models that later became Kato.
    So apart the the catalogues I was buying very little Hornby at that stage.

    • @oscarpaisley
      @oscarpaisley  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi John that would defiantly curse you to think with that pricing! Sometimes the catalogues are the best bit. Melbourne Model Dockyard sounds like it was a great shop. I have a Hornby Dublo N2 Tank Loco in a Blue and white strip box and on the box is almost all of a red an gold shop sticker with the name Clyde Model Dockyard Ltd Argyll Arcade Glasgow I've looked them up and they closed in the early 1970s having traded since 1789. I wonder if there is any link, I shall have another look.
      Thanks again for watching.

    • @johnd8892
      @johnd8892 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@oscarpaisley Yes Oscar, the standard Recommended Retail Pricing in Australia of Hornby at the time was very high, much to the advantage of Lima sales at the time. Lima Australian outline equipment soon outsold Hornby after years of Tri-ang market domination.
      The Model Dockyard name was taken on by several UK retail stores independently. The early focus was fittings for ship models and the original had such a distinguished reputation making models for the Admiralty in the 1700s. So the Dockyard name gave them a reputation.
      The Melbourne adoption of the name was Model Dockyard Pty Ltd, was by Captain E.H. James and a friend in about 1932. Same idea, but no connection.
      Early on the focus was on ship related items, but new developments in railways such as Hornby Dublo had the railway side expand rapidly. The Post War owners Peter and Patricia Duckett , a husband and wife team, expanded the railway side, but it was always planes, trains, automobiles, shipping and model engineering supplies. By the late 1960s they expanded beyond the basement shop and purchased the bank building above the shop for expansion of railway sales. This was recorded with a photo of the new remarkable showroom in a Railway Modeller of the time. Rare for a shop photo to be in the News Special section then, but the Dockyard was the major outlet of Peco at the time. Closed due to the owners retirement and few potential new owners could finance the purchase of a city building.
      A search in Google for Model Dockyard Swanston St Melbourne may reward those seeking more information. Photos inside the shop do not seem to have been posted online.

    I spent many a time and money in the Reading [Berkshire] dealers as shown in the leaflet. Sadly none of them exist now. 'Eames' was demolished and on the site now, stands an office building. 'Reading Model Centre' closed and the site was cleared to become residential flats & apartments. 'Trents' I think, became bankrupt; and the name of Butts Centre is now known as Broad Street Mall.
    Keep up the good work and stay safe! 😷
    BTW - where can I get replacement 'chuff-chuff' parts?

    • @oscarpaisley
      @oscarpaisley  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have just replied to Dave Mason below in the comments and he tells me that all the dealers named in Leicestershire have now all gone. Sad to hear not unexpected. Our local model railway shop closed just over three years ago now. The 'chuff-chuff' parts you are after may well have been obtained one of these many shops that have closed, it would have been my first port of call. But now I suppose the only real option is to keep an eye on that auction site.
      There are several tenders for sale at present with the soundbox in search for.

    I am pleased that I could see the Australian Victorian service agents listing at 9:12 and stop to examine.
    Many of the suburban Melbourne shops I knew of. A lesser number I had been to and purchased items from. Some from country Victoria I have heard of but few currently open.
    A few new shops opening, but not enough to cover the losses. A more specialised hobby these days with a much smaller toy component. In Melbourne I can think new shops not present in 1977 that I have purchased at, with a few more I know of.
    Some of the survivors are Hearns Hobbies, established 1946 and has a TH-cam channel these days, as I heard interviewed on radio just a few hours ago. They referred to a 295 Flinders St address and talked about the Collins St shop they used to have in the most expensive retail part of Melbourne. I am surprised it was still listed in 1977 as I had thought this shop had closed by the mid sixties. A friend older than me does not recall the Collins St shop. Another coincidence as I recalled a few weeks back re buying a Jouef catalogue there and then seeing my old French teacher on the train on the way home. The only time I have seen any of my teachers since leaving High School. th-cam.com/video/vDn7SFs6dpw/w-d-xo.html
    The Engine Shed of Box Hill was sold around 2000 and converted to a Chinese restaurant. Bought many Wrenn, Kato, Atlas and Athearn items there.
    A notable survivor is Branchline of Dorset Rd Croydon. This was the last model shop I visited a month or two back before the need for a lock down to essentials only became apparent. Now operating by mail order in the current emergency. Went there because my Tri-ang Rocket pack had arrived. Or more specifically the R3809 Hornby Centenary Rocket Train Pack. Branchline being one of the few surviving Hobby Shops that will stand by the products they sell and do repairs also. While there I also bought the latest release Princess and even a few rare boxed 60+ year old wagons. A good outlet for Hornby, Bachmann and the numerous new Australian firms such as SDS, Steam Era Models, Auscision and others to numerous to remember.
    Intertoy in Haig St South Mebourne was the Hornby Australian importer at the time and so if someone turned up at their address they would likely send them back to where they brought the item. My ex work colleague did the service work for Inter Toy as a side job. I just confirmed the process with him. He has quite a few stories to tell about what Hornby items were very problematic at the time. He was later a very keen collector and would prefer Branchline for his purchases. Amazing we had very similar model railway interests despite working in a very un model railway like environment.
    Perhaps the largest number of items I had purchased was from the Model Dockyard in Swanston St Melbourne. Always the major Melbourne outlet. I was once purchasing a Hornby R.553 Caledonian Single from them and they said "If you like the older outline locos you might be interested in this" and showed me a Wrenn catalogue image of the upcoming Adams 4-4-2T Radial tank. It never arrived from Wrenn, but I did finally get one in the form of the current Hornby version a few years back. The Wrenn Catalogue but especially the Dockyard Wrenn pricelist converted me to buying Wrenn for quite a few years until the Dockyard closed around 1984 with a 50% off sale. Could not resist a closing down sale 50s Triang Green Princess body for $1 from their new old stock of parts. Seems these had been sitting in the back for near 30 years among many similar items. The Dockyard owners would be spinning in their grave if the knew what occupies their building at 218 Swanston St now, such is progress in Melbourne.
    The Model Dockyard were probably the most significant model railway business in Australia by kick starting HO Australian outline modelling by importing a brass NSWGR C38 Pacific they ordered to be made from Kumata of Japan in 1963. Followed up in 1966 by a Kumata brass NSWGR AD60 4-8-4+4-8-4T Garratt . I thouht a Tri-ang Brittania was expensive but the Garratt was near ten times the price. Even so they sold out very quickly to the near unknown to me adult modeller market. These were also sold by Fulgarex in Switzerland and PFM in the USA. The Dockyard used to take out large display ads in the 1966 Railway Modeller as well as giving so much advertising support to keep the local volunteer based Australian Model Railway Magazine going during its difficult formative years.
    A few agents in the Victorian listing are really in NSW. So some confusion in geography from Hornby thousands of miles away.
    Probably more than you needed to know about a part of the list.

      Hi John I had not seen this comment yesterday when I replied to your earlier one. Thanks again for sharing such great information. Really does sound as if the Model Dockyard was a great shop, the closing down sale as you indicate must have had some gems in it.

      @@oscarpaisley Yes lots of gems but bitter sweet closing in that local modellers knew we were losing an institution. Even the smell of the shop was specially chosen to be pleasant and unique so as to encourage the right frame of mind for sales. Some I heard of much later in retail circles.

    Also anyone who’s got the 77 catalogue ,the section where the farther and son are building the layout how I wished that was me and my dad I would look at those pages for hours dreaming of having a layout like that

    • @oscarpaisley
      @oscarpaisley  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think this was very clever marketing in the mid to late 70s and a follow on/development perhaps of the farther and son type images used on some of the earlier set box lids, Great pictures. I think the 1980 catalogue is also very clever in showing model railway as a strong family product early on in the pages and in later pages showing the family man by himself taking great care and attention to detail with his layout planning/construction.

    Surprised at the waxy Albert Hall as the “wax look” didn’t really come in until 1978 and this is obviously a 77 set . Maybe the wax look crept in during 77 or maybe the loco is not original ?

    • @oscarpaisley
      @oscarpaisley  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Good afternoon Russell, Pat Hammonds book suggests that the last year of production for the Albert Hall was 1977 and that towards the end they were a waxy finnish. Perhaps these were in preparation for the R.761 Kneller Hall to follow in 78. I have recently acquired a R.075 class 47 in a matt waxy blue self coloured plastic dated October 77. I think this finish must have been creeping in across the range on various production runs in this period.

      Oscar Paisley yes they must have gradually introduced the Matt finish . It looked ok on blue diesels but was never convinced on steam locos . Interesting . I’d also forgotten the Hall got renamed Kneller Hall . It’s always Albert Hall to me ! Thanks Oscar

    Moving on to create a layout which would go with the Tri-ang Hornby era, the 1975 Hornby Catalogue contains a track plan which is similar to your layout with an elevated section. However, as illustrated the gradient would be too steep. It occurs to me that you could recreate a semblance of this layout using your track plan. This involves changing the elevated section from a flyover to an embankment. I think you could easily do this using the existing supports with side sections to make it look like an embankment. In this way you could illustrate the Tri-ang Hornby era as depicted in the catalogue. A larger version of this layout appears in the 1980 catalogue. The following blog details an unsuccessful attempt to built this layout:
    www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/blogs/entry/10119-where-ignorance-is-not-always-bliss-and-improvisation-has-its-cost/
    Discussion on the Hornby forum has elucidated that the layout illustrated was not a layout - it is only a diorama which was created to illustrate the catalogue. A track plan is given, but it cannot be built as illustrated. However, I think the idea is quite interesting! What do you think?

    • @oscarpaisley
      @oscarpaisley  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi I think many of the layouts depicted in catalogues were produced for photograph only and track plans given don't always go together as drawn. My earlier layout was derived from track plan 9 (8x4ft)from the 1976 book of plans (I think is identical to the featured on the blog you sent the link for). As I had a 10x5ft board available I redrew the plan for that size of board. This gave me gentler inclines which combined with steel track worked very well. This plan has two circuits but I found with the increased size of board I could get a third circuit and turntable in and this ended up being Super 4 track with catenary Have a look the earlier videos go back beyond this February 2017 th-cam.com/video/AzeKPWWnFbs/w-d-xo.html you will seen many all the man elements of plan 9.
      I’m unsure about the plan in the 1980 catalogue if it possible to build or not exactly, but the inclined section would be a challenge even with steel track at that length of layout. It sound like an interesting project. Try putting it down on paper of digitally. I started messing around with the layout plan 9 with photocopies cut out and moved bits around, but then did this on the computer latter just with cutout images of all the sections to scale. It seemed to work ok but its all theoretical until you start trying it out for real on the board, even with specifically designed software. They are great starting points these layout plans and a lot of fun can be had along the way.
      Hope that was of some help.
      Thanks again for watching.

      @@oscarpaisley Yes, it has been recorded on the Hornby forum by a former Hornby employee that the 'layout' depicted on the cover of this catalogue had in fact been a diorama created for photographic purposes! I found I could not complete the track plan with Hornby HVR2. I have found if HVR2 allows you to complete a track plan, then that layout can be built in reality, so HVR2 is useful in that way. However, HVR2 creates unrealistic steep gradients of a fixed value, so it is no good in that respect. According to my research, PIKO track has been designed to pass Marklin stock which has a deeper flange. PIKO geometry would allow you to complete a more complex track plan in a smaller space, but you would have to design it very carefully and maintain Hornby track spacing on curves. I have not tried PIKO track, but it might be an alternative to Super4 track, should the project to recreate the catalogue cover 'layout' grab your imagination! Thanks for uploading.
