I'm living and studying conducting in the Netherlands with Ed Spanjaard since last year and I'm amazed on how beautiful and diverse the Dutch works are. I really want to discover more and eventually, perform them.
With simple but pregnant motifs blossoming out into beautiful melodies, this good-natured, but at the same time impressively dramatic, music tempts me to call van Gilse the "Cheerful Tchaikovsky". When the tender but soaring section arrives at 28:12, it is as impressive as any "big tune" from that master. Indeed, after hearing his 2nd and 4th Symphonies, I'm ready to call van Gilse a master also.
The whole family abhor romantic music, we’ll give Meneer van Gilse a chance whether some of his symphonies have a flair of contemporary music, Madetoja barely went under the fence leaving hairs in the barbwire, if you catch my drift.
Not just a fine composer, but an exceedingly brave and upright gentleman as well.
We should be more proud of our Dutch composers...
