  • The solar cell works in several steps:
Photons in sunlight hit the solar panel and are absorbed by semiconducting materials, such as silicon.
Electrons are excited from their current molecular/atomic orbital. Once excited an electron can either dissipate the energy as heat and return to its orbital or travel through the cell until it reaches an electrode. Current flows through the material to cancel the potential and this electricity is captured. The chemical bonds of the material are vital for this process to work, and usually silicon is used in two layers, one layer being doped with boron, the other phosphorus. These layers have different chemical electric charges and subsequently both drive and direct the current of electrons
An array of solar cells converts solar energy into a usable amount of direct current (DC) electricity.

Hello there !! this is a nice animation. But I think the makers to please review the mechanism of conduction. The electron, on radiation, comes from the p-part of depletion zone and moves to the n-silicon and comes from n-Si to the outer circuit and returns back to the p-silicon. But in the animation, it is shown opposite. Please, please review it, and if found wrong, please rectify asap. This is a very nice animation for school level understanding.

Nicely explained the concept in a short animation. I will share this in my facebook page.

Are you sure you got the N and the P types of silicon properly labeled?
Seemed like you mixed up the two.

Electrons flow from negative to positive to produce an electrical current. By definition, an electron is negatively charged. The video is correct. I did not write the rules.
