Hello, thank you for this video it was so helpful to me I am redoing my steps. and they look exactly like yours I just pulled the carpet off, and I don't want to do anything to time consuming with my steps I just want to get the dried paint off, and tidy them up, because I want to paint them black, and put stair treads, or runner on. My question is do I have to sand them, or can I simply clean then off as I mentioned, and paint them with a paint with primer already in it? thank you so much in advance!!
You saved my life with this video. I've been using the wrong grit paper by far based on other videos. Just ordered a carbide scraper as well. I've been sanding with 60 grit without carbie scraper and I've barely made a dent.
An electric palm sander would be a lot easier and make less dust. A course grit sandpaper would cut right though any finish so scraping would not be necessary. Also a cordless multi-tool comes with a triangle sanding attachment to get in tight places.
Don Nash palm sanders are more so good for the risings & the nosing...a edger is best for the landing/stairs & a hand scraper is good for pulling the corners (I refinish floors for a living )
Don Nash I'm not floor refinisher but thatguyquincy is right, thats the method i use much easier! Recently started using scrapers and make tight corners & under radiators so much easier. Using what you recommend will trash the white painted perpendicular parts (apron)
what grade sand paper was used at the beginning when using the belt sander? I am sending but the oil stain I used will not go away. Could the stain have penetrated to deep and impossibile to remove completely. Thank you!! I need help :)

Refinishing stairs is an annoying job. I use a 3” grinder pad on a small battery operated grinder for edges and corners.. speeds up the edging a lot on the risers.
Great video, love your tips like using a cut up Piece of cardboard on corner to prevent damage to other corner piece. Thanks for being very clear and easy to follow instructions.

SamytheGreek hi! I stained first because putting painters tape on the risers would cause older layers of paint to flake off and cause an uneven surface. But the other way definitely works. Thanks for asking!
I was having great difficulty trying to remove estapol from hardwood steps; using belt, orbital & detail sanders. I watched your video & noticed the Carbide Scrapper. I did 95% of the work with the scraper with a great deal more control & less chance of damage. I could see the Estapol shavings first followed by the timber shavings a few scrapes latter. I could also get to within 1mm of the stringer, so only had to do a quick hand-sand & the timber steps were ready. Thanks for an informative & pleasantly narrated video.

oh yeah ..24 grit paper works well to sand the stairs followed by 60 grit to smoothen it out

Shouldn't you paint the risers before staining?

You have to prime with oil primer to cover the over stain ?
Woodglut scripts contain most of the woodworking plans you can find.

That's not a carbide scraper, it's standard steel. At least you can sharpen it easily.
