UNESCO World Heritage Site • Yongding Fujian Tulou (Hakka Houses)

  • We recently had the chance to see the beautiful Hakka houses in the province of Fujian in China.
    A UNESCO World Heritage site, these unique Chinese residential buildings built by Hakka people back between the 12th and 20th centuries.
    Built in either round or square shapes (aka roundhouses), these clustered walled villages could house up to 80 families and were built to enable stronger defence purposes.
    Flying into Xiamen, the journey to the Fujian (Yongding) took 3 hours each way by car (that was arranged by the hotel/inn we were staying at).
    Not only have these buildings held up incredibly well, but the architecture was simply remarkable and the food there was yummy too! Definitely worth visiting and really nice to be in such a serene environment too!
    Let me know if you’ve had the chance to visit or what you thought of this video!

    I love Tulou's because it is the only defensive architecture built by the people, for the people- castles were built for lords and rulers, Tolou were built by families for families. I find that fascinating!

      yeah totally agree with you Grace! I loved how every floor had a different purpose (e.g ground floor - kitchen etc), definitely a very thoughtful design process

    Very interesting, fascinating! Can't think of anything like this.A building designed with self defense in mind can actually become a tourist attraction! The original design of toulou building was square shape called Wei Loong Wu literally means dragon -containing-house ! Then evolved into round ones in fujian province .

    • @wanderingwithyanvlogs
      @wanderingwithyanvlogs  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      oh wow I didn't know that! I wonder why they call it dragon containing house? Or why they eventually changed from square shape to round?
      the lady actually was really great in explaining the concepts behind how all the buildings were built - and the fact they incorporate a lot of "nature" elements, like the earth, sky etc.

    They still use chamber pots! I guess they can't build modern plumbing without risking damage to the structures or affecting the historical integrity. I'm Jamaican Hakka and would love to visit these some day.

    • @wanderingwithyanvlogs
      @wanderingwithyanvlogs  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah definitely! I imagine it'd be quite a task to put plumbing in... had no idea what the pots were originally for but definitely makes sense! Defs worth a trip, the whole environment is so lovely and serene, it really is like stepping into another world.

    • @wanderingwithyanvlogs
      @wanderingwithyanvlogs  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hmm, the climate is not too bad they do have hot and cold weather. I think making preserved vegetables is more to do with using it for cooking and adding different variants of flavours. But in winter definitely you're right, it could be harder to grow crops then because it can get quite cold
